Planetary Info

Dustball was originally colonized because geographic surveys indicated the presence of large deposits of gemstones. When the surveys ended up being incorrect, many of the miners left, but a large, wealthy, and cunning family - the Malthus family - remained on the planet. Willing to work outside of legal bounds, the Malthus family started a series of casinos, nightclubs and hotels around the spaceport. As a result, the planet has the slogan "Where the elite meet, greet, and satisfy their most wicked desires".

There are five domed cities on the planet. Each one specializes in a separate variety of pleasure. The Malthus family has made a great deal of illicit money through their establishments on Dustball, and has been able to protect their investment due to a pervasive and complex campaign of blackmail against many high Lyran Commonwealth officials who have visited Dustball to sample the planet's manifold pleasures. Such abuses had become so pervasive that in 3005, Archon Alessandro Steiner established legalized and heavily-regulated "pleasure industries" on the model of Dustball on Kooken's Pleasure Pit in an attempt to break the Malthus family's stranglehold through direct competition. As of 3025, it was unclear if it had had any appreciable effect.[1]

The establishment of competing gambling concerns on the planet didn't have any effect on the Malthus family. The arrival of the Clans however, put a permanent end to the gambling industry on Dustball. Finding itself on the front lines of the Clan front, Dustball was frequently raided by Clan Jade Falcon and Clan Steel Viper.[2]
