Overview

The Sovetskii Soyuz was originally classed as a heavy cruiser developed as part of an overhaul of the Star League Defense Forces naval fleet following years of neglect due to large amounts of money being spent on the automated Space Defense Systems. While SDS construction had been going on, the Star League fleet had fallen behind in technology and capability when compared to newer WarShips emerging from member state shipyards. The Sovetskii Soyuz was one of a number of new designs to emerge following the New Arms Order of 2735 and was notable for its large use of computer control as well as its heavy armament. Four hundred ships of this class would be built before the Amaris Civil War brought about the downfall of the Star League. The vast majority were destroyed in the attempt to depose Amaris, but around 40 surviving vessels left with General Kerensky's Exodus fleet and a number continue to serve in the Clan toumans.[2]

Capabilities

The class carries such a large armament that some officers consider the Sovetskii Soyuz a mini-Battlecruiser. Its formidable weapons array consists of 12 Class-20 Naval Autocannons, 6 Class 45 Naval Lasers, 8 Medium Naval Particle Projection Cannons, 2 White Shark and 4 Barracuda Missile Launcher batteries. The size and number of these weapons however required a sacrifice in armor, with the ship mounting almost 50% less armor than the smaller Black Lion battlecruiser. Despite the light armor the Sovetskii Soyuz class were able to perform well in the war to liberate Terra, using its long range firepower to keep adversaries at a distance.[2]

Cargo

209,861 tons

  • Bay 1: 20 Fighters
  • Bay 2: 8 Small Craft
  • Bay 3: Cargo

Variants

As with all their WarShips, the Clans have performed periodic maintenance upgrades which have introduced new tech. The main differences between the ships used by the Clans and the Star League Navy are an increased fighter compliment, upgrading the armor to Ferro-Aluminum armor and adding HarJel hull sealant units.[2]

Clan Snow Raven
  • CSR Storm Crow [8]

  • CWS Dire Wolf - Originally the SLS Kharkov, the ship was part of the High Command's Squadron within the SLDF First Fleet. The Kharkov fought alongside the rest of the Squadron under the command of the flagship SLS Enterprise during the battle for the Terran system in 2766 when Stefan Amaris launched his coup. The Kharkov was responsible for carrying the surviving members of the SLDF High Command evacuated from the Mount Baker Castle Brian away from the Terran system.[12] Surviving to become part of the Exodus Fleet, the ship was eventually renamed the Dire Wolf and served as the Clan Wolf flagship. The Dire Wolf was the ship that ilKhan Leo Showers was aboard when he was killed by Tyra Miraborg's suicide attack in 3051.
ComStar
Star League Defense Force
  • SLS Sovetskii Soyuz - Took part in Operation Liberation as part of a 40-ship flotilla tasked to destroy as many SDS drones as possible prior to the recapture of Terra. The flotilla would destroy over 100 drones before it was completely wiped out, with the Sovetskii Soyuz as the last ship to succumb to enemy fire.[14] Potentially the lead ship of the class due to her name.
Wolf's Dragoons
Word of Blake
* WoBS Stalwart Defender - Destroyed in the Nusakan system in 3068.[16]
* WoBS Vigilant Guardian - One of the ships recovered by the Word of Blake from the former SLDF naval base in the Odessa system, which the Blakists renamed the Ruins of Gabriel, the Vigilant Guardian formed a part of the core of the Blakist WarShip fleet. The Vigilant Guardian was last observed in the Les Halles system as part of a pack of five Blakist WarShips which conducted a brief raiding campaign against the Duchy of Oriente in 3079. As at mid-3081 the Vigilant Guardian remains unaccounted for.[17][18]
