Planetary Geography

Umka is a water-rich world where the major landmasses are chains of islands.[6]

Planetary History

Immediately prior to the Reunification War Umka was a world within the Magistracy of Canopus, where the major industries were aquaculture and deep-sea farming and with two battalions of the First Canopian Light Horse stationed on-world in support of the irregular ground forces that made up the planetary garrison.[6]

War between the Star League and the Magistracy of Canopus was inevitable after the Magistracy joined the other Periphery nations in rejecting the Pollux Proclamation; Umka was an early target in the initial Star League Defense Force campaign against the Magistracy, with a flotilla of SLDF craft arriving in the local system in August 2577. The SLDF forces quickly dispersed the local pickets and began planetary landings with the 56th Brigade arriving on Umka soon after to capture the world.[6] The mercenary unit Mieselsen's Marauders had been on Umka immediately prior to the Star League invasion, but had been redeployed to Vakarel before the SLDF troops arrived, leaving the First Canopian Light Horse in place to support the planetary garrison.[32]

The local garrison refused to surrender easily, and while the 56th Brigade were able to capture the main industrial complexes quickly and eventually force the First Canopian Light Horse contingent off-world, the remaining garrison forces proceeded to wage a guerilla war. Breaking up into small groups, the garrison dispersed around the islands and archipelagos of Umka and forced the 56th Brigade to spend three months winkling them out; guerilla groups with hovercraft or armed IndustrialMechs would frequently relocate across the shallow seas between islands, frustrating the SLDF forces efforts.[6]

Although the 56th Brigade were responsible for capturing Umka, the SLDF task force responsible for conquering the Magistracy stationed a number of other units on Umka during 2577, units which included the 63rd Royal Brigade (from the Twenty-First Royal Division), Third Regulan Hussars and the Juggernaut regiment of the Stewart Dragoons.[33]

The Magistracy of Canopus had 13 worlds annexed by the Free Worlds League, either during the Reunification War[7] or by Star League decree in 2602,[34] and Umka was one of these worlds.

Umka was one of many worlds to be struck during the wave of Bloody Tricentennial attacks that swept across the Inner Sphere in the wake of the fall of the Word of Blake Protectorate. The city of Deep Hamilton was hit by a number of bomb blasts in the early hours of the 12th if October 3080 that killed more than 1200 people and devastated the commercial district of the city; this was followed by an attack that breached a major dam near the city later in the day, flooding the city. The breaching of the dam was witnessed during a live broadcast of the Umka World News local news network being presented by Julian Costamayor and his news team, who were most likely killed in the resulting flooding.[35]
