History[edit]
The Twelfth Donegal Guards were stationed on Venaria in 2765.[1]
During the Fourth Succession War the Twelfth landed on Stanzach. They captured the world, but during the Draconis Combine counterattack they were hard-pressed by the Ninth Pesht Regulars and Thirteenth Rasalhague Regulars. The Eighth Donegal Guards reinforced the Twelfth, which kept Stanzach in Lyran hands. Shortly thereafter, the Twelfth and Eighth were reinforced by the First Tyr Regiment.[3] The Twelfth continued to fight alongside the Tyr and Eighth Guards regiments against the DCMS forces for several months, and eventually drove the Combine forces off-world.[4]
Despite being transferred to Edasich to begin the War of 3039,[5] the Twelfth saw no combat and was permanently assigned to Trell I after the conflict. It was made the parent unit of the Red Brigade, simulating Free Worlds and Kuritan forces as Commonwealth Opposition Force (CoOpFor) in monthlong exercises. The Twelfth was noted to have taken to the swift-moving combination of speed and firepower that the new Armed Forces of the Federated Commonwealth was trying to instill, compared to the plodding wall of metal that the Lyran military was often accused of fomenting.[2]
In 3046, the Twelfth was stationed on Ryde alongside the native Ryde Militia. Late that year, elements of the Twelfth engaged an unnamed training battalion of DCMS Mechwarriors.[6]
Clan Invasion[edit]
The unit was upgraded to an RCT by 3050.[7] On Trell I, Clan Jade Falcon Khan Elias Crichell suspended all bids, deploying three full Clusters against the unit in an attempt to capture Victor Steiner-Davion. The Prince-heir lacked any combat experience and had been assigned to the Twelfth after his recent graduation with honors from the Nagelring.[8] Within 30 minutes of the commencement of the battle, innumerable pockets of soldiers died after poor communication hampered their coordination, with many sacrificing themselves to rig explosives or slow the invaders. Feigned or tactical retreats cost more and more troops, as delaying actions were ignored by the onrushing Falcons, despite Kommandant Davion's and others' attempts. The Prince and his battalion prepared to be overrun until the Red Brigade appeared in the Falcon rear. Even with the surprise of the shielded ambushers, the remaining Lyrans were unable to escape for long. Rejoining RCT command, Victor Davion attempted to formulate a plan with the remaining forces. Leftenant General Hawksworth saw the expected outcome of the fighting and the effect the capture or death of the Prince would have on the nation. He also knew the FedCom still controlled the skies and soon forcibly evacuated Victor with his aide, Galen Cox. The unit was destroyed during the brutal fighting against the elite Jade Falcon Guards and the supporting First and Fifth Falcon Striker Clusters,[9] though the remains of the Twelfth and Red Brigade escaped to the mountains and forested areas, fighting a guerilla campaign for many months behind enemy lines.[2]
