Michael Ubodo was a House Davion MechWarrior noted for his success in the much-maligned Blackjack.[1] [2] [3]

History[edit]

Michael Ubodo would attend the newly built New Avalon Institute of Science College of Military Science, serving in one of the institution's Training Cadres. The newly graduated Ubodo was on the lightly defended Draconis March world of Xhosa VII in 3022 when that world was raided by Tai-i Mercer Ravannion, who believed it would be easy prey for his "Charge of the Horde" tactic - massed groups of Stingers and Wasps that would overwhelm heavier but numerically inferior defending 'Mechs.[1] [2] [3]

Brevetted to command the two understrength Draconis March Militia companies of the Xhosa garrison, consisting mostly of Locusts and the maligned Blackjack, Cadet Captain Ubodo led his forces to the planet's windswept and icy Plain of Swords. Swarmed on all sides by the Kuritan 'Mechs, Ubodo remained calm as his "outmoded and inferior" Blackjacks took the brunt of Ravannion's attack, making use of what little terrain existed on the plain to respond to each Kurita thrust with a counterthrust before personally leading a counterattack that broke Ravannion's assault, forcing the Combine troops into a disorderly retreat.[1] [2] [3]

Word of the impressive showing by both Ubodo and the poorly regarded Blackjack would reach First Prince Hanse Davion himself, the First Prince personally decorating the young cadet with the Federated Suns Star for his bravery on New Avalon. The sight of Ubodo's Arrow, the Blackjack he piloted to victory on Xhosa VII, standing in line for this honor alongside Atlases, Marauders, Crusaders and Victors forced more than a few critics to reconsider their opinion of the much-derided Blackjack.[1] [2]

Earning command of a lance in the Eighth Deneb Light Cavalry RCT, Ubodo would be a vocal proponent of the poorly regarded 'Mech. Ubodo's success on Xhosa VII would result in the renaissance of the Blackjack, First Prince Davion ordering new variants of the design be developed, which also resulted in Davion engineers learning many of the claims made about the Blackjack were simply not true. [1] [2] [3]

Ubodo would remain with the Eighth through the Fourth Succession War, War of 3039, and the initial Clan Invasion, steadily rising up the ranks. Ubodo would be one of the survivors of the Eighth's ill-fated defense of Blue Hole during the Jade Falcon Incursion in the FedCom Civil War, becoming the 'Mech regiment's executive officer after the death of former XO, Kommandant Uriah Jervais. Ubodo would use his upgraded Arrow to hold off several points of Elementals on a headhunter mission during the fighting on Blue Hole.[2] [3]

BattleMechs[edit]

Ubodo would become intrinsically linked to the Blackjack, piloting the poorly regarded design to success and championing it even when confronted with its harshest critics.[1] [2] [3]
