Planetary Info

The Viborg system has an asteroid field in the place of the fourth planet. Because it is spread across only fourty degrees of its orbit the asteroid belt is thought to be relatively young, around 20,000 years old, formed when an interloper planetoid overtook the fourth planet from behind and tore it apart. The rocks are dense enough for one centralized mining operation to monopolize the whole system. In or near to the Viborg Belt, "above" its plane, is the Periphery Engineering and Northcross Asteroid Mining (PEn-NAM) mining habitat colloquially called "Penance" by its inhabitants, a very large space habitat including at least two unspecified factories, two large, multi-story grav decks and six or possibly twelve large hangars plus several docking collars.[1]

Viborg itself is described as a "garden world", with the population preferring to import ores and steel from the abundant asteroid belts via the Penance mining habitat over mining the planet itself.[1]

Planetary History

Reunification War

By the end of the Age of War Viborg was a member of the Timbuktu Province of the Rim Worlds Republic.[2]

Civil war erupted in the Rim Worlds Republic in 2575, with the factions polarised around those loyal to First Consul Gregory Amaris and those loyal to the Rift Republican Army and the Rim Provisional Government.[3] Viborg was garrisoned by the Third Amaris Fusiliers, one of the Rim Worlds Army units to side with the RRA and the RPG, and the Fusiliers spent the next decade in place.[4][5][6]

The Star League eventually decided to intervene in the civil war in support of Gregory Amaris, and in 2579 assembled Task Force MAILED FIST to help secure Amaris' control over the Rim Worlds Republic. A multinational force headed by the Star League Defense Force, Task Force MAILED FIST was responsible for executing Operation MAILED FIST, the name given to the military intervention. the first wave of attacks focused on securing significant worlds near Apollo,[7] until a destructive raid on Alarion by the 4th Amaris Fusiliers in retaliation prompted the SLDF to alter its initial strategy for the campaign, the focus shifted to reducing Rim Worlds Army concentrations throughout the Republic and the capture of key worlds.[8]

In late 2584 the SLDF changed tactics again; a number of major RWA units had been destroyed or captured, and the focus for the campaign shifted to capturing worlds of strategic importance, but the campaign was slowed by the greatly increased resistance offered by the RWA and local civilian populations, prompted by atrocities performed by the Draconis Auxiliary Corps when they captured Nightwish in mid-2584.[9]

Duke Narinder Selaj of Battle Group Timbuktu assigned three regiments from the 2nd Marik Auxiliary Corps - the Second and Sixth Marik Militias and the First Brigade of the Fusiliers of Oriente - to the conquest of of Viborg in 2588. The Star League forces successfully took control of Viborg, defeating the outnumbered Third Fusiliers, and all three FWLM units remained in place on the planet until they were redeployed for the invasion of Marisura in 2589.[10]

Star League Era

Viborg was conquered by the Lyran Commonwealth during the 2773-2775 Republic-Commonwealth War.[11]
