The Caldrea system was home to at least one habitable world or construct and as at 3145 was located in the Buckminster Prefecture of the Benjamin Military District within the Draconis Combine.[1][2]

System Description

The Caldrea system is located near the Dove and Pilkhua systems.[3]

System History

The Caldrea system was settled at some point during or shortly after the First Exodus from Terra.[4]

Age of War

Caldrea was a target of the Lyran Commonwealth offensive known as the Long March, the most ambitious military campaign the Commonwealth had launched up to that point in time. The campaign began in 2463 and was initially successful, misdirecting the DCMS into believing the target of the offensive was St. John and allowing the Lyrans to capture a number of border worlds as well as the worlds of Skondia and Nox, partly through their use of BattleMechs, a technology the Draconis Combine had yet to field.[23]

By the time the Lyran forces assaulted Caldrea, the Lyran military had been on the offensive for four years, and despite the constant rotation of tired troops out and reinforcements in, fatigue on both the military personnel and their equipment was taking a serious toll. Caldrea was fiercely defended by the DCMS forces; the discovery that the northern continent of Caldrea was a rugged mountainous maze riddled with traps and prepared defences was too much for the Lyrans, who resorted to breaching the Ares Conventions by using nuclear weapons to clear the mountains. This left Caldrea under Lyran control, but left the planet half-devastated and of little use to the Commonwealth.[23]

The Lyran campaign to capture Caldrea was detailed in books such as The Caldrea Debacle, published by Mountain Press in 2500; authored by Timothy Asd, the book detailed actions such as the unsuccessful attack on The Cassino, the fortress that guarded the Kelli pass and which saw the Lyran Twenty-Third BattleMech Battalion destroyed or heavily damaged and the battalion's CO, Colonel Yoller, killed in action, highlighting the reasons behind the decision to use nuclear weapons to complete the conquest of Caldrea.[24]

Notes

There are discrepancies between House Kurita (The Draconis Combine) and House Steiner (The Lyran Commonwealth) over the dates of the Lyran assault on Caldrea during the Age of War. House Steiner (The Lyran Commonwealth) places the Lyran invasion as "four years after" the Long March began, which would place the assault in 2467;[23] however, House Kurita (The Draconis Combine) describes Caldrea being taken by the Commonwealth two years earlier, in 2465.[5]
