According to the (apocryphal) German BattleTech novel Karma, Sadurni was taken from the Capellan Confederation by the Free Worlds League only "a few years" before 3028, specifically to press citizens from a longtime Capellan planet into service for SAFE.

A few chapters of a subsequent, equally apocryphal novel (Gier) are set on Sadurni.

Planetary History[edit]

Ostensibly a quasi-Terran type world ripe for colonization, Sadurni has had notorious issues with contaminated water sources throughout its history. The planet was first settled in 2320 by anti-Terran Hegemony exiles from the United States of America. Decades of struggling as an autonomous world ended when Sadurni joined the Capellan Confederation upon that nation's founding. The planet was soon allocated to the Andurien Commonality, which assigned numerous colonists from other Capellan worlds.[2]

Star League[edit]

Sadurni was long known for the quality of its marble and the skill of the stoneworkers who crafted it. Sadurni marble could be found in the Court of the Star League on Terra.[1]

Prior to the fall of the Star League, Sadurni was the headquarters of the Seventh Army of the Star League Defense Force.[34]

Succession Wars[edit]

Sadurni's water supply issues worsened throughout the Second and Third Succession Wars as Star League–era purification equipment broke down. Birth defects and chronic health problems plagued the population until advances derived from the Helm Memory Core alleviated water and soil issues somewhat.[2]

Andurien Wars[edit]

During the Andurien Secession the FWLM landed on this agricultural world. Though direct fighting killed some citizens, many of the people who died during the conflict died because of the collapse of the economies of Sadurni's cities. People fleeing the cities relied on the kindness of strangers and friends and family members in the countryside. Shortly after these famines occurred, the Free Worlds League government sponsored relief efforts under military authority. As a result, life in the cities returned to a semblance of normality. Patra, the main continent and location of most cities, was hardest hit during the war. To bring in much-needed cash, the stoneworkers of Sadurni traveled to Andurien and other Duchy worlds, rebuilding their damaged cities. This means that nonessential construction and repair of Sadurni's cities was deferred. Even in late 3067 some of the damage remained in place.[1]

The two other continents, Xanthi and Katerini, were nowhere nearly as badly damaged as Patra and quickly recovered from the war.[1]

Dark Age[edit]

Late in the thirty-first century the Duchy of Andurien established a chemical weapons facility on Sadurni, making use of native toxins in manufacturing area denial weapons.[2]

Sadurni was among the Andurien worlds annexed by the Capellan Confederation in 3105 after the Duchy's disastrous involvement in the Victoria War.[29] The return to Capellan control was not well-received by Sadurni's populace whose protests posed problems for CCAF garrisons.[2]

ilClan Era[edit]

In late 3151, an anti-Capellan uprising was ended due to the diplomatic efforts of Magestrix Ilsa Centrella-Liao. Deploying allied troops from the Second Andurien Guards to secure the capital city, Southerton, helped calm the rebellious populace, and the Magestrix herself during a public appearance promised to raise Andurien's historic claim to the world to the Capellan Chancellor and Andurien Duke. The latter action roused Daoshen Liao's ire but quelled any further unrest among the planet's hopeful population.[35][2]

By June 3152 Sadurni had been transferred to Andurien control.[3]

The database of the (apocryphal) 1989 video game MechWarrior, set around the year 3025, gives a population of 456 million for Sadurni and describes the environment as "ice" (out of only three broad impressions of planetary environments given in the game, these being "desert," "ice," and "tropical"). The description one-liner reads "A frozen, barren, lifeless rock - see you there."

Notes[edit]

The apocryphal novel Karma notes that the Free Worlds League captured Sadurni from the Capellan Confederation "a few years" prior to 3028 for the explicit purpose of pressing Capellan citizens into service for SAFE, the League's secret service. This must obviously have occurred prior to 3025 judging from canonical sources, and presumably also prior to the 3022 Concord of Kapteyn that created a standoff between the League and the Confederation.
