History

Early Years

The Eleventh Atrean Dragoons were originally a part of the armed forces of the Marik Commonwealth, with the brigade being founded during the early days of the Free Worlds League. The Atrean Dragoons would continue to serve as the provincial forces of the Marik Commonwealth until the League had expanded to the point that the forces of the Free Worlds Guards were insufficient to garrison the League's borders; when that point was reached, the League Parliament applied pressure to the Marik Commonwealth to loan a portion of the Dragoons to the League to for the purposes of federal defense.[1]

Age of War

The relationship between the Atrean Dragoons and the Free Worlds League Military was formalised in 2528, when Captain-General Albert Marik made the loan permanent in response to the eruption of the Second Andurien War between the Free Worlds League and the Capellan Confederation. Albert Marik attached a single stipulation to the formal transfer; the Eleventh and the other regiments of the Dragoons were required to honor their roots in the Marik Commonwealth by continuing the tradition of recruiting graduates from the military academies on Atreus.[1]

The Eleventh Atrean Dragoons were effectively destroyed on Bolan in 2541 but kept on FWLM rolls for political reasons.[2]

Star League Era

The Eleventh was reconstituted during the reign of Captain-General Ewan Marik by reassigning experienced personnel from the other regiments within the Atrean Dragoons.[1] Erin Chu, a former mercenary unit commander who went on to serve as the Dormuth Council representative for irregular forces, played a large part in the reconstitution of the Eleventh and would eventually serve as the Eleventh's Commanding Officer.[3][2] By 2765 the Eleventh was close to forming a third battalion.[1]

While the Eleventh remained federal troops the entire brigade was loyal to the office of the Captain-General, allowing whichever member of House Marik was holding the office at the time to employ the Dragoons for his or her own purposes. These purposes - officially all undertaken in the interest of federal security, but often either of a federal or personal nature - included those that might have caused other federal units to hesitate, and with the increased tension between the Free Worlds League and the Star League following the Marik Civil War Captain-General Ewan Marik wasn't above using the Dragoons as a martial extension of his belligerant and antagonistic policies towards the Lyran Commonwealth. Ewan Marik's son, Captain-General Kenyon Marik, continued to use the Atrean Dragoons to make life difficult for Star League Defense Force garrisons in the Free Worlds League.[1]

Third Succession War

During Anton Marik's Revolt the Eleventh was stationed on Matheran.[4] At that time they were inexperienced and equipped with medium-weight 'Mechs. Since they were loyal to the Captain-General, Anton Marik had to dispatch a force to deal with them. He sent the Twelfth Atrean Dragoons to Matheran, confident that the 11th would be destroyed quickly. Unfortunately several officers, including all three battalion commanders, resigned rather than support Anton. This lack of experience allowed the Eleventh to string out the Twelfth's efforts to destroy them. The Twelfth would be on Matheran for six months, slowly grinding the Eleventh down to half strength. The timely arrival of Smithson's Chinese Bandits lifted the pressure on the Eleventh Dragoons and forced the Twelfth on the defensive.[5]

Though the Twelfth was nearly destroyed after another month of fighting, the Eleventh wasn't able to deliver the death blow. Instead Duke Anton sent Wolf's Dragoons Beta and Gamma regiments to reinforce the Twelfth Atrean Dragoons. The Wolf's Dragoons units were led by a newly created unit called the Black Widow Company.[6] Smithson's Chinese Bandits saw the writing on the wall and began to withdraw, advising the Eleventh Dragoons to do the same. The Eleventh initially refused, but soon discovered that they were trapped between two larger and more experienced forces. During their retreat, the 11th Dragoons survivors ran into the Black Widow Company and couldn't get past them. When they received reports that Beta regiment was on the way, the 11th Dragoons surrendered to Captain Natasha Kerensky.[7]

Andurien Secession

Twenty years later during the Andurien Secession, the Eleventh Dragoons and Eighth Orloff Grenadiers attacked a single battalion of the Third Defenders of Andurien on Sadurni. Despite being warned that the Third Defenders were very skilled, the Eighth and Eleventh took serious damage. The Third Defenders, realizing they couldn't win a stand-up fight, broke into lance sized units that came together to attack the Loyalist forces. This might have gone on forever, but the Eighth Grenadiers fought back without regard for collateral damage. At the end of February, 3038, the Third Defenders withdrew to Andurien.[8]

The Eleventh Dragoons later dropped on Andurien, and supported the First Regulan Hussars as they destroyed a battalion of the Third Defenders of Andurien.[9] Later the Eleventh Dragoons surrounded a rebel neighborhood on Atreus and began reducing it. To their surprise a grey haired woman appeared in the middle of their formation. She announced that she was Dame Catherine Humphreys and surrendered to the Eleventh Dragoons, who had surrounded her refuge.[10]

FedCom Civil War

During the FedCom Civil War the Eleventh Atrean Dragoons were called to Rochelle, leading them to think that combat was imminent. Instead, the LCCC had them oversee shipments of humanitarian aid into the Isle of Skye. Persistent rumors that had the Eleventh Dragoons raiding worlds in the Skye region were investigated by SAFE.[11]

The Jihad

In 3079 the Atrean Dragoons were stationed on Atreus, guarding the capital world from assaults by other former Free Worlds League forces. They spent most of the Jihad as a reserve force and are one of the few units to be at their official strength.[12]

The Dark Age

When the Free Worlds League fragmented and the Marik Commonwealth became an independent nation again, the Commonwealth found itself critically short of weapon supplies due to the trade problems endemic within the former Free Worlds League and restrictions on trade. As a manufacturer already established within Commonwealth space, Imperator Automatic Weaponry stepped up. Many 'Mechs within the Commonwealth military were modified to take Imperator Ultra model autocannon, and with the heavy urban combat seen to retake Atreus, the larger grade Imperator autocannon became increasingly popular. One of the anecdotes of the era was that the Eleventh Atrean Dragoons replaced so many weapons with Imperator autocannon that if it wasn't for the purple Marik eagle on their 'Mechs, the unit could've be mistaken for an AFFS unit.[13]

The Fifth Regulan Hussars landed on Atreus in 3083, but the Eleventh Atrean Dragoons quickly destroyed many of the Regulan 'Mechs. In fact, the Dragoons seized more in salvageable equipment than they lost in the conflict. They repelled another raid on Atreus with equal ease, but not as much salvage.[14]

The Eleventh invaded Harmony in 3119. They successfully took the world away from the Principality of Regulus and inflicted heavy losses on the Regulan Hussars.[15]

Officers

In 3025 the unit was commanded by Colonel Omar Sandusky.[16]

As of 3050 to 3059 the commanding officer was Colonel Evelyn Panfili, she is also still the unit's commander in 3067.[17][18][2][19]

As of 3085 the commanding officer is Colonel Said Berridge.[20]

Tactics

The 11th Atrean Dragoons were specialists in small unit actions.[2] In 3085 however, their specialization changed. With their posting to Atreus, the 11th Atrean Dragoons became skilled at city fighting.[14]
