== Store links ==
 +
Hi Rev, good to see you back in action! Have a virtual pat on the back buddy! :)

===Dropship / Small Craft Templates===
+
A word of caution though: You've been inserting store links into item articles (specifically, [[BattleRun 2]]). I think this is a bad idea. Using links to external sites has bitten Sarna in the back multiple times in the past already, because those links go obsolete in a heartbeat when the other site decides to change their makeup, or simply goes offline. We've seen a forum crash, two changes of link structure on the new forum, the death of BattleCorps and some other sites, and one or two revampings of the Catalyst store so far. In each and every case we suddenly had dead links on Sarna. To this day we're seeing occasional IP edits fixing or simply removing old store links from many years ago that are now dead links. My takeaway is to avoid external links like the plague, and straight out copy relevant online content (like official rulings) to talk pages to archive them there. Hi Rev, Happy New Year to you. I've been doing some Small Craft and DropShip articles as of late. I've noticed that the info boxes are lacking listing for Safe Thrust & Maximum Thurst. Is possible for you to added them to the info box? I've tried do it manually, but they don't appear when i enter them. -- [[User:Wrangler|Wrangler]] 16:18, 7 January 2010 (UTC)

: Thanks for the welcome, Frabby. Sure, I can recognize that danger, especially if it has already happened. The reasons for adding them are understood, but it appears the administrative cost is too high (don't get me started on how it is ''still'' difficult for new players to even ''find'' the store on the CGL site; I do my purchasing on DriveThru). As to adding store links, why don't we just remove them altogether? A large part of wikis involves copying wikicode and changing it. If we do away with it, then it won't be replicated by editors (and errant admin-types).--[[User:Revanche|Revanche]] ([[User_talk:Revanche|talk]]|[[Special:Contributions/Revanche|contribs]]) 08:02, 4 May 2021 (EDT)

::Not rush, I'm not some task master or something! heh.  I was going suggest to add slot for fuel too. Sorry keep imposing. I'm justing finding alot missing things in the template.  I've changed the articles I've been doing's Armaments to Armaments & Capacities since there alot stuff cover that description doesn't cover or too much. -- [[User:Wrangler|Wrangler]] 17:01, 7 January 2010 (UTC)

:::I just added those fields to the dropship template.  Unfortunately, I do not have the current information on those values as all I have is TRO 3057. It shouldn't be to much trouble to add them though. --[[User:Peregry|Peregry]] 19:50, 7 January 2010 (UTC)

:::::Thanks Peregry, Anything is better than nothing.  I'm been just frustrated lacking ability to fix problems with existing templates. -- [[User:Wrangler|Wrangler]] 22:40, 7 January 2010 (UTC)

::::::One hint, Wrangler, is to mimic what already exists. For example, I had a HUGE learning curve when trying to figure out how to adopt infoboxes (from WP) onto this site. But, since then, I've forgotten a lot of what I've learned. When I do have to do it again, I get into the guts of the template I want to change and find some code close to where I put to put the adaption, find where the code repeats and then copy the kit-&-kaboodle. Test around with it, until it does what you want it to do, look at the history of other Editors to see what they did. Trust me, with your lengthy history here, you get some massive leeway if you screw up a template...plus you know how to put it back to what it was before you tested on it. ===Leviathan Question===
+
== Ping! ==
Hi Rev

I wanted to ask you as i'm writing up the Leviathan Warship article.  I have dilimea, i want to keep Transport and Heavy Battleship information seperate from one another. This is due to Transport and Battleship specs are rattly differient from one another.  The Transports are all being converted in to the Battleship design.  Should i just keep them into one article, or seperate them. I normally want keep together, but the Transport hasn't done alot beside move folks across space, Leviathan II battleship is making history in Jihad as thing move along. At the moment, the article is one piece, however I believe and think it deserves seperate article.  What should i do? -- [[User:Wrangler|Wrangler]] 22:44, 7 January 2010 (UTC)

:Armchair answer: discuss as two separate variants on the same article and then include both cats at the bottom. To me, Leviathans are Leviathans...the ship is the same model, but different variant (and missions). However, I do recommend you bring the question up at [[BattleTechWiki:RequestForComment]], so you get more than my opinion on the matter.--[[User:Revanche|Revanche]] ([[User_talk:Revanche|talk]]|[[Special:Contributions/Revanche|contribs]]) 22:50, 7 January 2010 (UTC)

::::::::The Small Craft template still needs to be fixed.  Its still missing the Burn Rate. The Tigress article one doesn't have the issue since I originally used the Dropship template for it when i was unable find smallcraft template (don't ask). In response in regards to the changes Battlespace vs current SO rules. The changes are not as visable in the stats we are been putting up in the article per say.  Its more rules based things regarding the ships types and game play itself.  I can't remember off hand right now what they are.  My problem which started whole mess was that i kept miss-reading some things in stats. However, its still little confusing to me how they listed this particular stat for the ships. Example: The Tigress article, where this mess got started from. The Tigress is a small craft which lists 15 tons of fuel in Major Periphery States sourcebook. The Burn Rate is 8.15 days.  Meaning the burn rate was done in days, not by ton way i've been mis-reading it. The Aquarius and Lyonesse articles are older than Tigress (despite being printed in TRO:3075.)  They forgot to print the burn rate for those ships. The reason why i got confused besides mis-reading Tigress article in the source book was that the Burn Rate name didn't what you use to list how many days of fuel you have.  I would thought they would have printed a stat like that as Maximum Fuel Range (Days) = ''8.15''. I kept miss the conection that rate was MAX Days of fuel verses how much fuel is burned. -- [[User:Wrangler|Wrangler]] 02:50, 11 January 2010 (UTC)

:::::::::Okay, try that. Let me know if it doesn't work. Off to bed, tho, I think. G'night. --[[User:Revanche|Revanche]] ([[User_talk:Revanche|talk]]|[[Special:Contributions/Revanche|contribs]]) 03:05, 11 January 2010 (UTC)

:::::::::: So the new burn rate figure should be calculated as (Fuel/Burn per day) = No. of days ? [[User:Djuice|Djuice]] 17:18, 11 January 2010 (UTC)

::::::::::: [hands up] Sorry; don't really know. I was just making the changes to the template, as requested. Hi Rev, in regards to this [[:File:Tamar Rising coordinates 2021-06-16 (CGL).png]], I think it should be noted somewhere in the text box going with the file that two of the three systems have subsequently been identified as pre-existing systems by Ray that had been renamed. Just to make it clear that we aren't looking at three entirely new and previously unmapped systems (only one). [[User:Frabby|Frabby]] ([[User talk:Frabby|talk]]) 03:48, 22 June 2021 (EDT)
:Apologies. Please feel free to revert my edits. As part of my spot copyediting, I checked the referenced pages and didn't see anything on those pages regarding Abysmal, and, wanting to keep the integrity of BTW high, I removed them. It sounds like, though, since you are still working on that page, you were just using the entries as templates? Also, if you are going to be working on a page for some length of time, you might find using the {{tl|inuse}} or {{tl|Underconstruction}} tags to be helpful, to protect it from other Editors (''but you don't have to''). Hi Rev, Sorry about the coming up with this at last minute.  I was going over the templates, since i was writing another aerospace article. There appears to be a missing section in the info box.  Structural Integrity.  None of the template's info boxes have them listed.  Once again, since i am unable to do infobox code.  Is possible these can be added to WarShip, DropShip, SmallCraft and Aerospace fighter templates when you get a chance?  Thanks! -- [[User:Wrangler|Wrangler]] 16:30, 25 January 2010 (UTC)

Hey Rev, just noticed you updating the [[Template:InfoBoxStateUnit]], and I am guessing that you do not know that it has been retired alongside [[Template:InfoBoxMercUnit]] because they are not time agnostic.
:Sure. Just tell me what you want it to say, both in the template and in the data. For example, do you want the template to show in the 'Structural Integrity' and the data to only show a number? :Quick Question: I may have to improvise this if there isn't one.  Do we have Space Station template? I've looking to do article for the station from the [[Handbook: Major Periphery States]].  I went to see if there was template for them, so i check [[Technical Readout: 3057 Revised]].  None of the space stations article exist. Is it going major uh-oh to put one together from scratch? -- [[User:Wrangler|Wrangler]] 01:10, 26 January 2010 (UTC)

::No, it really won't. But, what would be helpful (save me time and let me do it before this weekend) is if you tell what you want in the template, in bullet form, like this:

* Item 1

* Item 2

* Item 3

* etc.

Revanche, I am following up on the matter of adding the field Format to the Product Infobox, namely, [[Template:InfoBoxProduct]] and [[Template:InfoBoxProduct/doc]].  Probing the documents, I have a rough sense of what edits would be needed. But I also surmise that these pages are sensitive and that an error in set up would immediately affect anything using that template (though I suppose any error in editing could be fixed by reversion).  So do these go through the ususal edit process? or do they require some special handling?  --[[User:Dude RB|Dude RB]] ([[User talk:Dude RB|talk]]) 22:03, 24 October 2021 (EDT)

:::*Two things: 1) yes, you can definitely add in additional categories that break down the RotS by prefecture. That is a logical development.

:::*2) As a fellow Editor (three involved here), I'm not sure I agree with Wrangler about the year: I think it should definitely be shown, so that when people read 'current governor', they understand current as of 3132. In fact, any reference to people in templates about a company, planet, etc, probably should have the year that position was held by him in parenthsis, so that readers know when this is true. Ex: Current Governor: Billy Ray Cyrus (3132). That's my opinion. Consensus will bear out how we do it.

:::*You didn't ask, but I've always worked at Sarna from the perspective we're reporting from the far future (maybe, say, the year 5000), so that some facts are currently lost to us, but all of our readers are reading about Sarna for the history of the Inner Sphere (rather than the current news). That's not held by everybody, so how we represent different points in history remains up in the air (at least for the next 15 or so Real Life years, until we catch up with the Dark Age). --[[User:Revanche|Revanche]] ([[User_talk:Revanche|talk]]|[[Special:Contributions/Revanche|contribs]]) 14:14, 27 January 2010 (UTC)

I changed the name to the historic name since that name is used in both, the atlas section in ''Historical Turning Points: Hanseatic Crusade'' (p.3), and all maps (p. 14,15,16,17,18), which was published in 2020. I am not sure whether this more recent source does actually supersede the statement from 2012, would leave that to you to decide. Nevertheless you are right should have mentioned a source, will do next time.

:::I would say no, not if they're completely apocryphal. However, it is possible that characters that appeared in an apocryphal source also appeared in some canonical source. In the case of the characters from MW4, I suggest you check all books covering Carver V to see if any of the folks from the game were mentioned; they're all important people after all. And if a character as such is canonical then it goes into the categories. In that case, you'd have to be careful to make it clear in the article what parts are apocryphal. [[User:Frabby|Frabby]] 13:25, 27 January 2010 (UTC)

::::What Frabby says. When I first read your request, I was going to point you to him, since his interests deal with the subject of apocrypha much more. If/when you do find important characters that exist outside of ''MW4: Vengenance'',  my concept of identifying the apocryphal is to have either a ''MW4: Vengenance'' or Apocrypha sub-section at the end of the character history. That section should include years, so that readers can easily match the information with canon material, if they so desire. --[[User:Revanche|Revanche]] ([[User_talk:Revanche|talk]]|[[Special:Contributions/Revanche|contribs]]) 14:06, 27 January 2010 (UTC)

::::::This going be tough.  MW4 games re-wrote some fiction.  The character MAy have appeared in normal fiction, such Youngblood from Crescent Hawk games, but MW4...i don't know if there any books that covers what happened on Carver V aka Liberty. Other than name change...mentions of the Fire Ant in Technical Readout: 3050 Upgrade.  I don't know of any source book during that time that covers it.  I believe its possible the characters who've been given a reference to the FedCom Civil War source book have mentions in it. I don't have a searchable source of information at the moment. So i will take me while to do this.  As for the character problem.  I think we should create a Apocrayha Characters category for those whom COMPLETELy have non mention in regular canon sources. -- [[User:Wrangler|Wrangler]] 16:10, 27 January 2010 (UTC)

::::::Sure. My philosophy is every article should belong to some category, to help increase the interconnectedness of the wiki. : Hey, Madness. There "shouldn't". There's no rule, just a preference that was shared with me on another wiki: it makes no difference to the reader, but it helps (albeit slightly) to the editor, a bit of separation between the readable content and the wiki-code (of categorization). It's a bit like putting spaces after bullets and their bullet items or like the space after the indent at the beginning of this response. I was convinced it made things a wee bit easier for other editors and now do it out of habit. There's no need for you to adopt it. Good question. --[[User:Revanche|Revanche]] ([[User_talk:Revanche|talk]]|[[Special:Contributions/Revanche|contribs]]) 11:09, 10 June 2022 (EDT)
Dear Revanche, I feel that [[User:Doneve|Doneve]] really deserves some special merit/award for his contributions to planetary information. He is citing Chris Wheeler's IS Atlas to replace the erroneous Y-coordinates with the actual values, and as Chris Wheeler is (himself) cited as a BattleTech fact-checker in regards to timelines and planetary information, the source is pretty sound.  This task has been on the "to-do list" for planetary data for some time, and requires ~2000 separate edits for the Inner Sphere alone.  It is quite a task, and I feel he deserves recognition.--[[User:S.gage|S.gage]] 23:35, 1 February 2010 (UTC)

:I agree with you. Doneve's additions have been important in adding (the industrial articles) and correcting material (planetary data). There are two options: Editor & Admin awards. Its my goal to introduce a new ribbon every month, and right now Editor Awards are the most populated. Unless you want to wait until the appropriate Admin award is available and nominate him for one of those, might I suggest you award him one of the Editor Awards? Hi Rev, sorry to bother you with this issue.  The Template Help:CreateMercenaryUnitArticle is terribly out date and partically broken. The template is missing unitname line it it, which causes the infobox to have the mercanry's name instead of the actual unit name.  Also the template has wrong article category is incorrect it. Its has main category of (Mercenaries) vers of Mercenary Commands.  It also lacking line for < References / >. (I'm spacing it so you don't have coding issue here :P)  Is it possible to replace this with newer one? *Forgot to mention.  Do you need me to make new template what the should like? I would think you were better at that than i am, i'm just noticing problems cropping up.  Also, who should I talk to about Neuling.  He rapidly added whole slew (12) of articles to Sarna, but only merc units with just listings of what mercenary unit has for components. no history or anything much else. I'm not great talking to people, do you know whom be best ask him/her about adding content to her/his articles? I've fixed one until i noticed how many he/her was adding. -- [[User:Wrangler|Wrangler]] 19:55, 12 February 2010 (UTC)

:Okay, I'll take a look at the template tomorrow (Valentines' Day is today for my wife and me). Feel free to provide some suggestioons, but I'm sure you're right that it is out of date.

:As for Neuling, I see he is providing solid facts and even references. No one is required to provide a complete article (which you often come very close to doing). As long as they provide facts about the unit and not just an empty article, then he is helping. Some of us enjoy writing prose, while others enjoy just adding data. All-together, we'll get to better articles. --[[User:Revanche|Revanche]] ([[User_talk:Revanche|talk]]|[[Special:Contributions/Revanche|contribs]]) 14:20, 13 February 2010 (UTC)

:::I have two points of view on this that /may/ appear to be counter-productive, but really aren't. First is that no one owns an article, even one they created. Each article is presumed to be an act of collaboration and if an Editor cannot work in that environment, then a public wiki is not really where they need to be. (Of course, the extension of that is they are free to work on their own project - such as Roosterboy has done with his [http://www.btencyclopedia.com/ ComStar Historical Archives] - but without the promise of the breadth of scope our project has.)

:::The other point is that established Editors, such as you and I, have a responsibility to cultivate and grow other, newer Editors...the farm team, so-to-speak. It behooves us to encourage their growth, efforts and creativity as much as possible, and to refrain from "biting the newcomer" (to borrow from Wikipedia) as much as possible.

:::You want to improve upon his articles, but at the same time, you don't want to scare him off. Both are commendable goals. One way to cultivate him is to make minor copyedits. Granted, not necessarily your strong suit, but since he is not a native English speaker, there are plenty of ways you can instruct him on how we do things thru demonstration of minor improvements of his articles. My suggestion is to do just that. Show him how to properly format an article, add citations, use italics and wikilinks, etc. Follow him somewhat (much as I did with you, when you first started posting here), and write encouraging notes explaining the changes you made, by using the history links. If you see an article YOU want to drastically improve...write a note to yourself on your page and then...wait. Give the article some time to sit, so he can finish it at his own pace. You can improve it enough to save it from deletion (if it is a target for deletion), but let it be. Give it three weeks, a month, whatever. And then, come back and improve it. If he stops posting altogether for a length of time, you can come in earlier. If he continues posting, but has moved on from your target article(s), then you can come in, make your additions and by then, he should feel much more comfortable with the collaboration process.

Hey, you may have noticed I occasionally come along behind your current project and fix links that are pointing to a redirect, like switching <nowiki>[[Primitive Engine]]</nowiki> to <nowiki>[[Primitive engine]]</nowiki>.  Are you planning to do anything with this: [[Special:WhatLinksHere/Composite_Internal_Structure]] ?  Five redirects, and which should be the "true" name is a mystery to me.  If you can figure that one out, I'll be happy to deal with the links.--[[User:Talvin|Talvin]] ([[User talk:Talvin|talk]]) 20:06, 28 June 2022 (EDT)

: Yes, I am (and you're the first to notice my new white whale), but the "when" is debatable. There are so many items that are treated like proper nouns on Sarna that are truly common, and it has completely infested articles, even outside of wikilinks. "Composite Internal Structure" is a fine example and should really be "composite internal structure" (or "Composite internal structure", as an article name). If you want to follow me, be my guest; or, you can follow your own path and see where it takes you (like with "composite internal structure"). I'd be glad to collaborate with you, regardless.

: To answer your question (and off the top of my head):
 +
:* Good-to-stay, but directed to "Composite internal structure":
 +
:** Composite
 +
:** Composite chassis
 +
:** Composite structure
 +
:* Redirect (actual) articles to de-capitalized names and then delete the improperly Capitalized Article Names:
 +
:** Composite Chassis
 +
:** Composite Structure
 +
: My guidance to you would be to open up the references in the main articles (that you find linked) and determine which term is the "root" one; I've even used the index of a rulebook as guidance. Then, open your mind and accept common abbreviations as redirects, especially those that are used in canon lore/rules (see [[Special:WhatLinksHere/Extralight_fusion_engine]]); on the opposite side, outright deny some, such as that capitalize the First Letter of each word in a common name or abbreviate with periods (ex: I.C.E.).
 +
: My first goal was to properly redirect each common noun in the [[Fury (Combat Vehicle)]] article, but I've got distracted by fixing all engines. I'll probably return to the vehicle article when I'm done with this "branch".

I can’t help but note that the ToC in the [[BattleTech Master Rules, Revised Edition]] rulebook capitalized "Rifle" - you have thus "corrected" a direct quote from the book. ==Disambiguation: (DropShip) vs. (DropShip class)==
 +
Hi Rev, I'm confused: Why did you move [[Lee (DropShip class)]] over to [[Lee (DropShip)]]? We deliberately chose to spell out the disambiguation ten years or so ago because simply (DropShip) isn’t clear enough - it could refer to an individual DropShip or a whole class. That’s why simply (DropShip) was deprecated in favor of the more precise (DropShip class), and I made an effort to move articles and redirects accordingly and update links. Same for other ship types etc., except for special outlier cases like the [[Erinyes (Individual WarShip)]] which happens to be a one-off individual ship eponymous for its class yet still requiring disambiguation.

==Rasalhague force Question==

:And this is what you get when you attempt to import a thumbs up as ASCII art.
Hello Rev, i wanted bring this up to you. [[Talk:1st Tyr‎]].  I'm not sure if your update on latest jihad books, but this is important question to ask. With absorption of Rasalhague forces by Clan Ghost Bears, new galaxies with clusters sharing older Rasalhaguian names are being used. Some are absorbed older units, some are not. the First Tyr for instance was actually destroyed and was reborn as Clan unit.  Question is do we treat these units as seperate, or do they stay together?  Were talking about forces who's name changed, and nation technically has changed as well. I'm inclined to go with seperate so keep less confusion when someone looks up strictly Inner Sphere version of the regiment. Due to the name conventions here, (no mentioning of Cluster in name or regiment for articles.) There sometimes going be clashing. -- [[User:Wrangler|Wrangler]] 12:54, 24 February 2010 (UTC)

A change in capitalization stylization means Editors are encouraged to weed out the improperly capitalized "Aerospace Fighter" and replace it with "aerospace fighter" (except in section and table headings)."
 +

 +
Two questions about this capitalization style:
 +

 +
# Does this change include piping of links to the "Aerospace Fighter" article to read "aerospace fighter" instead?
 +
# Does this change also include references to "Aerospace" in an article's body text. (Such as "Part of the Aerospace elements" in the Charles Sinclair article)

: A1: Any instances found of either term ("Aerospace Fighter"/"AeroSpace Fighter") or capitalization of related words (ex: "Aerospace", "Fighter", "Pilot") should absolutely be corrected. There is just no reliable manner in which to track group progress, now that all linked uses of those terms are eradicated. Feel free to hunt 'em down.
 +
: A2: No, that is simply what I'm personally working on. Help in eradicating mis-use of that term is, of course, appreciated, as it is on all improperly-capitalized words & terms. However, Sarna was in error to have a policy statement where "AeroSpace Fighter" (''et al'') was the "preferred" term, in light of CGL's completely opposite position. We felt having the ASF Campaign was the best way to put a complete stop to it on Sarna. There may be future campaigns announced, as Sarna is working with CGL to update our [[BattleTechWiki:Manual of Style|Manual of Style]].

== Is it appropriate to have notes when BattleTech references are actually incorrect compared to real life? ==
 +

 +
Hi, I didn't see an Policy that addresses the following topic.
 +

 +
I noticed that the articles concerning DCMS ranks say that the symbols are ''katakana'', presumably because that's what BattleTech canon (FM: DC, House Kurita Sourcebook, etc) actually say.
 +

 +
However, the symbols that BattleTech canon actually uses is ''kanji'', not ''katakana''....if one needs a real world reference, this should suffice: https://www.fluentin3months.com/japanese-numbers/#kanjinumbersinjapanese11trillion
 +

 +
* Question 1: Assuming that BattleTech canon sources actually do say ''katakana'', is it appropriate to correct BattleTech canon when the canon sources themselves are actually incorrect compared to real life sources?
 +
* Question 2: If question 1 is yes, what would be the preferred way to correct the article references, use Notes to record the inaccuracy or just edit out the canon article text that conflicts with the real world?
 +

 +
As an example of Notes method, please see how I updated [[Senior Master Chief Petty Officer]]

:: I prefer the use of notes, also, to address the incongruities. Rarely do we have the manpower and focus to defend over years differences between what is said in canon and what Sarna ''believes'' should be said. Notes, at the least, address it and allow the tangent to be addressed.--[[User:Revanche|Revanche]] ([[User_talk:Revanche|talk]]|[[Special:Contributions/Revanche|contribs]]) 13:07, 26 August 2022 (EDT)

As an aside, the BattleTech canon discrepancy between ''katakana'' and ''kanji'' isn't limited to DCMS ranks. I vaguely remember a particularly egregious example in either House Kurita Sourcebook or one of the MechWarrior RPG books about a soldier having "konji" on their uniform, when in reality, it was ''katakana'' (and poorly transcribed kana at that). I'm keeping an eye out for that on BTW. [[Special:Contributions/75.23.228.139|75.23.228.139]] 13:48, 26 August 2022 (EDT)

Store links[edit]

Hi Rev, good to see you back in action! Have a virtual pat on the back buddy! :)

A word of caution though: You've been inserting store links into item articles (specifically, BattleRun 2). Frabby (talk) 05:40, 4 May 2021 (EDT)

Thanks for the welcome, Frabby. Sure, I can recognize that danger, especially if it has already happened. The reasons for adding them are understood, but it appears the administrative cost is too high (don't get me started on how it is still difficult for new players to even find the store on the CGL site; I do my purchasing on DriveThru). As to adding store links, why don't we just remove them altogether? A large part of wikis involves copying wikicode and changing it. If we do away with it, then it won't be replicated by editors (and errant admin-types).--Revanche (talk|contribs) 08:02, 4 May 2021 (EDT)

Hey Rev, just noticed you updating the Template:InfoBoxStateUnit, and I am guessing that you do not know that it has been retired alongside Template:InfoBoxMercUnit because they are not time agnostic.

Category Correction: Individual Naval Vessel[edit]

So tried my hand at creating a template (Template:InfoBoxIndividualNavalVessel)and I think I correctly built it. InfoBoxProduct[edit]

Revanche, I am following up on the matter of adding the field Format to the Product Infobox, namely, Template:InfoBoxProduct and Template:InfoBoxProduct/doc. --Dude RB (talk) 22:03, 24 October 2021 (EDT)

correct naming of Köningsberg[edit]

I changed the name to the historic name since that name is used in both, the atlas section in Historical Turning Points: Hanseatic Crusade (p.3), and all maps (p. 14,15,16,17,18), which was published in 2020. I am not sure whether this more recent source does actually supersede the statement from 2012, would leave that to you to decide. Nevertheless you are right should have mentioned a source, will do next time. Thank you for the back-fill. If it hasn't happened already, I'll add your notes to the Notes section. The use of the historic spelling in Hanseatic Crusade does suggest that it should have priority. Bibliography spacing[edit]

Hi, Revanche. I was wondering why there should be two lines between the Bibliography instead of one. They looked the same on my desktop when I tested them but I know it's easy for different platforms to show things differently. Madness Divine (talk) 21:09, 9 June 2022 (EDT)

Hey, Madness. --Revanche (talk|contribs) 11:09, 10 June 2022 (EDT)

Nominee for a Sarna's Most Wanted[edit]

I nominate Operation DIVINE INTERVENTION to be Sarna's Most Wanted in some future week. I realize that something with five redlinks would not normally take that coveted spot, but it's an important event in the universe's history. Related: this would solve a problem I discuss further at Talk:2827. --Talvin (talk) 10:14, 20 June 2022 (EDT)

Composite...something.[edit]

Hey, you may have noticed I occasionally come along behind your current project and fix links that are pointing to a redirect, like switching [[Primitive Engine]] to [[Primitive engine]]. Are you planning to do anything with this: Special:WhatLinksHere/Composite_Internal_Structure ? Five redirects, and which should be the "true" name is a mystery to me. If you can figure that one out, I'll be happy to deal with the links.--Talvin (talk) 20:06, 28 June 2022 (EDT)

Yes, I am (and you're the first to notice my new white whale), but the "when" is debatable.
To answer your question (and off the top of my head):
  • Good-to-stay, but directed to "Composite internal structure":
    • Composite
    • Composite chassis
    • Composite structure
  • Redirect (actual) articles to de-capitalized names and then delete the improperly Capitalized Article Names:
    • Composite Chassis
    • Composite Structure
My guidance to you would be to open up the references in the main articles (that you find linked) and determine which term is the "root" one; I've even used the index of a rulebook as guidance. Then, open your mind and accept common abbreviations as redirects, especially those that are used in canon lore/rules (see Special:WhatLinksHere/Extralight_fusion_engine); on the opposite side, outright deny some, such as that capitalize the First Letter of each word in a common name or abbreviate with periods (ex: I.C.E.).
My first goal was to properly redirect each common noun in the Fury (Combat Vehicle) article, but I've got distracted by fixing all engines. I'll probably return to the vehicle article when I'm done with this "branch".
Does this help? --Revanche (talk|contribs) 21:26, 28 June 2022 (EDT)

"I'm a Doctor, not a great hulking robot anime reject!"--Talvin (talk) 09:06, 29 June 2022 (EDT)
On a second look, I am going to disagree on something you said above: '''[[Composite]]''' is too vague to be kept. As Composite internal structure points out, even the full name is often confused with Endo-Composite. I do not find anything in Technology using "composite" that is not internal structure, but it's always one new sourcebook away. I am already piping in the full name for the shortened versions when I find them, as sweat now saves tears later.--Talvin (talk) 11:12, 29 June 2022 (EDT)
Absolutely. You're the SME on the ground dealing with that particular industrial product. I can get behind that decision.--Revanche (talk|contribs) 11:14, 29 June 2022 (EDT)

Gauss Rifle proper name casing[edit]

I can’t help but note that the ToC in the BattleTech Master Rules, Revised Edition rulebook capitalized "Rifle" - you have thus "corrected" a direct quote from the book. Given that different spelling is used in official products, do we really need to unify a proper name casing across Sarna? Frabby (talk) 01:14, 30 June 2022 (EDT)

I don't consider the capitalizations from non-standard text—like tables of content and section headings—to be appropriate sources for writing styles. However, please feel free to jump in here for consensus building. --Revanche (talk|contribs) 09:44, 30 June 2022 (EDT)

Disambiguation: (DropShip) vs. (DropShip class)[edit]

Hi Rev, I'm confused: Why did you move Lee (DropShip class) over to Lee (DropShip)? We deliberately chose to spell out the disambiguation ten years or so ago because simply (DropShip) isn’t clear enough - it could refer to an individual DropShip or a whole class. That’s why simply (DropShip) was deprecated in favor of the more precise (DropShip class), and I made an effort to move articles and redirects accordingly and update links. Same for other ship types etc., except for special outlier cases like the Erinyes (Individual WarShip) which happens to be a one-off individual ship eponymous for its class yet still requiring disambiguation.

Same about the Tigress small craft. Frabby (talk) 14:42, 2 July 2022 (EDT)

Yeah, I'm having the same second-thoughts. I did find some mis-usage of "class" for other titles. I'll revert back.--Revanche (talk|contribs) 14:48, 2 July 2022 (EDT)

Query about the contract on Aerospace Fighter capitalization project[edit]

"27 July 2022: Contract Out on "Aerospace Fighters" A change in capitalization stylization means Editors are encouraged to weed out the improperly capitalized "Aerospace Fighter" and replace it with "aerospace fighter" (except in section and table headings)."

Two questions about this capitalization style:

  1. Does this change include piping of links to the "Aerospace Fighter" article to read "aerospace fighter" instead?
  2. Does this change also include references to "Aerospace" in an article's body text. (Such as "Part of the Aerospace elements" in the Charles Sinclair article)

Thanks!

Yes (with contextual provisions) and yes. --Revanche (talk|contribs) 14:41, 8 August 2022 (EDT)

Query about the proper noun capitalization project[edit]

  • Question 1: is there no longer a bounty on "AeroSpace Fighters"?
  • Question 2: is there a bounty on Anti-Missile Systems? I haven't seen an announcement yet.

75.23.228.139 22:42, 11 August 2022 (EDT)

A1: Any instances found of either term ("Aerospace Fighter"/"AeroSpace Fighter") or capitalization of related words (ex: "Aerospace", "Fighter", "Pilot") should absolutely be corrected. There is just no reliable manner in which to track group progress, now that all linked uses of those terms are eradicated. Feel free to hunt 'em down.
A2: No, that is simply what I'm personally working on. Help in eradicating mis-use of that term is, of course, appreciated, as it is on all improperly-capitalized words & terms. However, Sarna was in error to have a policy statement where "AeroSpace Fighter" (et al) was the "preferred" term, in light of CGL's completely opposite position. We felt having the ASF Campaign was the best way to put a complete stop to it on Sarna. There may be future campaigns announced, as Sarna is working with CGL to update our Manual of Style.
Good questions. --Revanche (talk|contribs) 09:20, 12 August 2022 (EDT)

Design Quirks redirects[edit]

Design Quirks should probably be renamed Design Quirk but I don't have permission to rename all the redirects automatically if I move the page. Could you give it a go? Madness Divine (talk) 09:49, 26 August 2022 (EDT)

Could you please link me to an example you'd like changed? --Revanche (talk|contribs) 09:51, 26 August 2022 (EDT)
Sorry, I think I misworded that. Here's the message: To also modify links to this page in other pages, go to Special:ReplaceText. I don't have permission to do that. I lost track of how many pages have Design Quirks links which would now link to the new redirect. Or maybe I'm seeing a problem that isn't really there. Madness Divine (talk) 10:00, 26 August 2022 (EDT)
I still need an example of where that change would take place, as Special:ReplaceText is extremely easy to massively screw up hundreds of pages at a time. Seeing your present example would give me context in which to limit that tool. --Revanche (talk|contribs) 10:03, 26 August 2022 (EDT)
Anti-Aircraft Targeting is an example; redirect code is #REDIRECT[[Design Quirks#Anti-Aircraft Targeting.5BBT.2C_AS.2C_SBF.5D]]. I don't know how many of these DQ redirects there are, just that there are more than when I first looked at the task months ago and put it on the really back burner. Looks like Wrangler took a run through fixing them in February. Madness Divine (talk) 10:17, 26 August 2022 (EDT)
That's a very good example. Thank you. This might be tricky. I need to consider the permutations. I'll let you know. --Revanche (talk|contribs) 10:23, 26 August 2022 (EDT)

Is it appropriate to have notes when BattleTech references are actually incorrect compared to real life?[edit]

Hi, I didn't see an Policy that addresses the following topic.

I noticed that the articles concerning DCMS ranks say that the symbols are katakana, presumably because that's what BattleTech canon (FM: DC, House Kurita Sourcebook, etc) actually say.

However, the symbols that BattleTech canon actually uses is kanji, not katakana....if one needs a real world reference, this should suffice: https://www.fluentin3months.com/japanese-numbers/#kanjinumbersinjapanese11trillion

  • Question 1: Assuming that BattleTech canon sources actually do say katakana, is it appropriate to correct BattleTech canon when the canon sources themselves are actually incorrect compared to real life sources?
  • Question 2: If question 1 is yes, what would be the preferred way to correct the article references, use Notes to record the inaccuracy or just edit out the canon article text that conflicts with the real world?

As an example of Notes method, please see how I updated Senior Master Chief Petty Officer

75.23.228.139 12:52, 26 August 2022 (EDT)

I've run across a few such notes on other pages with similar errors, if that helps. Madness Divine (talk) 12:56, 26 August 2022 (EDT)
I prefer the use of notes, also, to address the incongruities. Rarely do we have the manpower and focus to defend over years differences between what is said in canon and what Sarna believes should be said. Notes, at the least, address it and allow the tangent to be addressed.--Revanche (talk|contribs) 13:07, 26 August 2022 (EDT)

As an aside, the BattleTech canon discrepancy between katakana and kanji isn't limited to DCMS ranks. I vaguely remember a particularly egregious example in either House Kurita Sourcebook or one of the MechWarrior RPG books about a soldier having "konji" on their uniform, when in reality, it was katakana (and poorly transcribed kana at that). I'm keeping an eye out for that on BTW. 75.23.228.139 13:48, 26 August 2022 (EDT)

Steve Venters[edit]

Hi Revanche, I was wondering if you knew of a way we could contact Steve Venters. His work has been getting attention among the MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries Community with Clan Heavy Omnimech mods heavily based on his original TRO 3050 illustrations. His page on the BTW is very bare, and I'd love to see it get the same treatment as I was able to give to Ashley Watkins' page. After all, he designed the way the Timber Wolf (Mad Cat) looks! I have no idea if he's still alive - it would be cool to get Sean to do an interview with him like he did with Matt Plog.--Beemer (talk) 12:26, 2 January 2023 (EST)

I've been looking for a firm online presence for him on-and-off for a while now, without much luck. He's possibly the president/general contractor of a construction company in North Carolina, but I haven't been able to confirm. Same person is on LinkedIn as an art distributor in the 90's.--Cache (talk) 13:19, 2 January 2023 (EST)
Hah! I checked LinkedIn this morning and found the same stuff! I'll ask in a few more places to see if I can get any leads.--Beemer (talk) 13:57, 2 January 2023 (EST)
