Planetary History[edit]

Star League[edit]

After the "Birthday Proclamations" of 2755, Liezen was the host to a Star League Defense Force garrison. However, when the 183rd Royal Mechanized Infantry Division arrived from its former Rim Worlds Republic posting, over 20 percent of the unit's equipment did not arrive. Some claimed it was a misjump by the carrying JumpShip. Others believed that the JumpShip carrying the equipment was commandeered by the 9934th Mechanized Infantry Regiment who returned to the Republic in defiance of orders.[45]

In or around 2765 the command staff of the Second Arcturan Guards - who were stationed on Liezen at the time - attempted to put an end to the tradition of "Liezen hazing" within the regiment. The hazing was largely harmless, involving new recruits having to serenade a ten-year veteran of the Second, but its banning offended the local population. As a consequence the command staff often found itself being pelted with produce by the locals.[46]

Succession Wars[edit]

First Succession War[edit]

Liezen was one of a number of strategically important systems in the Lyran Commonwealth to be subjected to bombardment by the Draconis Combine between 2786 and 2790, as the Lyran Commonwealth Armed Forces began to crack under the pressure of continuing efforts to annex the Bolan Thumb while also attempting to maintain a defensive posture against both the Draconis Combine Mustered Soldiery and the Free Worlds League Military.[47]

Fourth Succession War[edit]

Liezen was attacked as part of the final wave of attacks launched during Operation GÖTTERDÄMMERUNG in Late 3028, with the Lyran Commonwealth Armed Forces deploying the mercenary command Winfield's Brigade to capture the planet.[48] The battle had bogged down, and Liezen was still contested when the lull between operations began in early 3029.[49]

Defending Liezen was the Altenmarkt Militia, a veteran Draconis Combine Mustered Soldiery militia command, aided by local guerrillas who made excellent use of the lush forests on the planet to frustrate the mercenaries. Although Winfield's Brigade managed to capture each of the three major cities on Liezen in turn, they lacked the numbers to hold the cities and continue pursuing the militia forces. Frustrated, Winfield's Brigade seized the planetary capital city of Salzmin again and asked for reinforcements, which arrived in June in the form of the Fourth Donegal Guards. With sufficient numbers available to garrison all three major cities on Liezen and still hunt the Altenmarkt Militia, the militia forces knew that their position had become untenable and retreated off-planet, leaving the local guerrillas to continue fighting alone.[19]

Liezen was said to be a water-poor planet, supporting a population of over six million with only an estimated 10 million gallons of water. The Free Rasalhague Republic sought to remedy the situation by strapping two massive engines to a chunk of space ice weighing 15 billion tons, enough to multiply the planet's water supply more than 30,000-fold. The ice ship, unofficially dubbed the Paradise-Hope, began its 150 million kilometer journey in March 3047 under Captain Tom Byron with a mercenary escort.

On 4 April an unknown JumpShip was spotted tailing the Paradise-Hope. On 7 April the first attack from the JumpShip reached the ice ship, a squadron of aerofighters. The aerofighters targeted the command center and the engines, but were shot down by the defending mercenaries.

With the failure of the initial attack, the JumpShip took a more direct approach, closing with the Paradise-Hope on 8 June. The JumpShip then proceeded to land several 'Mechs on the ice ship while attempting to tow it off-course using harpoons. However, the attackers were once again repulsed by the defending mercenaries.

While the JumpShip took no further direct action, the attackers had one more trick up their sleeve: saboteurs infiltrated the ship and attempted to implant a small nuclear device near a weak point of the Paradise-Hope. Fortunately for its crew, the saboteurs were uncovered on 1 August before they could complete their preparations. The attackers were revealed to be mercenaries of Hansen's Reavers (unknown if they have any relation to Hansen's Roughriders). They claimed to be hired by Hydrodynamics, Inc., the corporation that previously imported all of Liezen's water. The corporate offices of Hydrodynamics, Inc. were raided by local police the same day, beginning a FRR investigation.[50]

Clan Invasion[edit]

Operation Revival[edit]

Liezen was conquered by Clan Wolf during Operation REVIVAL as part of their Third Wave of attacks in June 3050. The 11th Battle Cluster chose to deploy nearly its entire force, Trinaries Assault, Battle, Striker and Fighter, which faced off against the defending 1st Liezen Armored Brigade and 2nd Fighter Wing. The militia forces were highly motivated and put up stiff resistance at Randolm Valley, Skeiner's Bay and Salzmin, but the Wolves were able to succeed in the end by pinning them in place with frontal assaults and flanking their position.[51]

Jihad[edit]

Liezen was conquered again during the Jihad when Clan Hell's Horses launched an invasion of Clan Wolf holdings in the Inner Sphere in early 3071, acquiring holdings for their own relocation to Spheroid space. Liezen was seized by the Hell's Horses between the 7th and 28th of June 3071.[35]
