Unit Description

The St. Ives Academy Training Group serves as the training cadre for the St. Ives Academy of Martial Sciences (SIAMS). Traditionally a combined-arms regiment of 6 battalions, it's exact composition fluctuates every two years as the cadets graduate and a new class comes in. Cadets usually hold officer positions of up to battalion level with only a few instructors overseeing everything.

Despite it's status as a training cadre, the regiment has been sent to front line combat in support of other units.

History

Formation

Following the secession and formation of the St. Ives Compact, the old St. Ives Martial Academy was closed and rebuilt into a new institution with assistance from the Federated Commonwealth and former instructors of the New Avalon Institute of Science. Opened in 3036, the St. Ives Science Institute included the SIAMS as an independent college. Thus the St. Ives Academy Training Group was born.

Capellan-St. Ives War and its Aftermath

Posted on St. Ives at the start of the Capellan Civil War, the unit was sent to Brighton in early 3061 to reinforce Raymond's Armored Infantry against the disarmament efforts of the Raman DMM, an AFFS unit flying Star League colors. Despite being nominal allies, some combat took place between the two units wherein the Training Group performed well. The arrival of the 2nd McCarron's Armored Cavalry later that year forced the defenders offworld and Brighton fell to the Capellan Confederation by 3062.

The St. Ives Academy Training Group spent the next two years in brutal combat on various worlds and never broke under fire. Numerous cadets were transferred out to replace losses in other St. Ives Compact units. By 3063, the unit was below half strength with one battlemech battalion, two armor battalions and one battlearmor company.

Jihad

There is no information on the activities of the St. Ives Academy Training Group during Operation Sovereign Justice and Operation Thunderstrike. However, we can deduce from several sources that the unit lost 2 battalions of battlemechs sometime between 3067 and 3069. It is most likely that these losses occurred during Operation Thunderstrike on St. Ives.

On 13 September 3070, the 8th and 21st Divisions of the Word of Blake Militia with support from Simonson's Cutthroats and the WoBS Perdition assaulted St. Ives.

Dark Age

During the Victoria War Roman's Mounted Fusiliers and the Red Lancers assaulted Shuen Wan. They forced the 1st Oriente Hussars and 6th Oriente Hussars to withdraw from the system.[1] In 3104 they faced the 8th Oriente Hussars on Pella II, inflicting heavy losses on the Hussars.[2]

Tactics

In its earlier career when the unit was known as Shepard's Mounted Fusiliers, it used light and medium class BattleMechs to allow for swift combat. The Fusiliers employed these lighter BattleMechs in the reconnaissance role in support of other Liao formations. They also used tactics to lure opponents into traps where they could ambush its enemies.[3]

By the 3060s, the unit's tactics had changed under the leadership of Aleisha Carling. As Aleisha's Mounted Fusiliers, they specialized in urban battlegrounds after their experiences in the Capellan-St. Ives War on St. Loris. The unit became skilled in fighting in tight quarters of city environment, after fighting their Capellan opponents for control of the planet.[4]

Unit Emblem

Its emblem was originally a grizzly bear mounted atop an armored personnel carrier.

Notes

The Mounted Fusiliers started to change its name after Aleshia Carling took command of the Regiment during its mercenary career. This tradition continued after Carling's retirement and Peter Roman's ascendance to rank of Sang-shao. It is unclear what became of Carling, or why she was given a sudden retirement.[13]

It is unclear as of this writing the status of the Mounted Fusiliers' supporting Regiments.

Rules

Game Rules

The Field Manual: Capellan Confederation offers Force Specific Rules for the Aleshia's Mounted Fusiliers for use in scenarios. As part of the unit's special / unique rules, it has the following;

  • Unit Assignments: When rolling up the unit using the Random Assignment Table, a player rolling up 'Mech assignments may choose on the "B" Equipment Rating twice per Lance. Also its optional to also roll on Federation Suns' rolling table if a player chooses, due to their past with the FedCom.
  • State of Repair: Capellan-St.Ives War inflict serious damaged to the unit which hadn't been repaired as of 3062, thus the following rolls for units being used in a scenario. If the results is negative, the player must randomly roll up a 'Mech in each lance give the following critical damage. Rolling a 1D6 - 1-Engine, 2-Sensor, 3-Foot, 4-Jump Jet, 5-Shoulder Actuator, and 6-Gyro. Then again, randomly roll which critical slot it damaged.

They also do not need standard piloting rolls while running or turning on paved hexes. This remains in effect as long as 'Mech's leg actuators remain intact with no critical damage.[14]

The Fusiliers have a "C" Equipment rating for when 'Mechs and other vehicles are rolled up or chosen.
