St. Ives Academy of Martial Sciences Training Group

Unit Description

The St. Ives Academy Training Group served as the training cadre for the St. Ives Academy of Martial Sciences (SIAMS). Traditionally a combined-arms regiment of 6 battalions, it's exact composition fluctuated every two years as the cadets graduated and a new class came in. Cadets usually held officer positions of up to battalion level with only a few instructors overseeing everything.[1]

Despite it's status as a training cadre, the regiment had been sent to front line combat in support of other units.[1]

From 3036 to 3063, it was part of the St. Ives Military Command of the St. Ives Compact. It was absorbed into the Capellan Confederation Armed Forces following the defeat of the St. Ives Compact in 3063.

Following the Jihad, the Training Group's battlemech composition appears to have been limited to a single battalion of mechs. Whether this is policy or the demand for replacement troops/equipment is unknown.

Sometime between 3085 and 3145, the St. Ives Academy of Martial Sciences Training Group was removed from the St. Ives Armored Cavalry brigade.

Sometime after 3113, a secret society known as the Fraternal Order of the Pale Rider was formed by SIAMS students opposed to the policies of Chancellor Daoshen Liao. It has since spread to several regiments by alumni and still existed in the SIAMS Training Group by 3145.

History

Formation

Following the secession and formation of the St. Ives Compact, the old St. Ives Martial Academy was closed and rebuilt into a new institution with assistance from the Federated Commonwealth and former instructors of the New Avalon Institute of Science. Opened in 3036, the St. Ives Science Institute included the SIAMS as an independent college. Thus the St. Ives Academy Training Group was born.[2]

Clan War

The St. Ives Academy Training Group Battalion did not fight the Clans.

In 3054, the Training Group was split into companies to garrison various factories and other important locations on St. Ives.[3]

Capellan-St. Ives War

Posted on St. Ives at the start of the Capellan Civil War, the unit was sent to Brighton in early 3061 to reinforce Raymond's Armored Infantry against the disarmament efforts of the Raman DMM, an AFFS unit flying Star League colors. Despite being nominal allies, some combat took place between the two units wherein the Training Group performed well. The arrival of the 2nd McCarron's Armored Cavalry later that year forced the defenders offworld and Brighton fell to the Capellan Confederation by 3062.[1][4]

The St. Ives Academy Training Group spent the next two years in brutal combat on various worlds and never broke under fire. Numerous cadets were transferred out to replace losses in other St. Ives Compact units. By 3063, the unit was below half strength with one battlemech battalion, two armor battalions and one battlearmor company.[1]

Jihad

By 3067, the Training Group had been completely rebuilt with over a battalion of omnimechs and almost two battalions of advanced battlemechs.

There is no information on the activities of the St. Ives Academy Training Group during Operation Sovereign Justice and Operation Thunderstrike. However, we can deduce from several sources that the unit lost 2 battalions of mechs sometime between 3067 and 3069. It is most likely that these losses occurred during both operations on St. Ives.

On 13 September 3070, the 8th and 21st Divisions of the Word of Blake Militia with support from Simonson's Cutthroats and the WoBS Perdition assaulted St. Ives. The devastating three day battle saw the capital city of Tian-tan firebombed and over two million people dead before the enemy was driven off. It also significantly damaged the St. Ives Academy of Martial Sciences campus and completely destroyed the remaining Training Group cadre.

The Training Group was reformed following the reopening of the SIAMS in 3078. By 3079, it was less than a third in strength and will take several years before being fully rebuilt.

Operation Golden Fortress and Operation Vindolanda

The Training Group did not participate in either Operation Golden Fortress or the ROTS counterattack, Operation Vindolanda. However, losses from both conflicts have seen many of its personnel and equipment transferred to rebuild other damaged regiments. So much was removed that the regiment could no longer be considered combat effective by 3085. The battlemech battalion was below half strength with RetroTech battlemechs expected to replace the lost machines.

Tactics

By 3063, the SIAMS Training Group had difficulty operating as a unit and possessed no preferred combat abilities. They were known for never leaving comrades behind and will continue fighting until all members were retrieved.[1]

Notes

Most of the Sourcebooks after FM:CC stopped providing a breakdown for the support units of the SIAMS Training Group. Given the nature of the regiment and its mission profile, it is highly unlikely that its armor and infantry were removed. The lack of mention was most likely an oversight.
