Planetary History[edit]

Early History[edit]

Matamoras was first established in the twenty-seventh century as a mining and industrial world. A poorly run and corrupt prison facility was used by the Draconis Combine Mustered Soldiery on the continent of Siberia until it—and the inmates—were abandoned in the mid-2700s. Their descendants were rediscovered in 2913 and rejoined the planetary community.[1]

Succession Wars[edit]

During the Succession Wars, Matamoras was home to three large military manufacturing centers producing conventional armaments and vehicles, but all three facilities were destroyed by 2942.[1]

Matamoras' primary function, however, was as a key mining world within the Combine, providing the nation's defense industry with millions of tons of metals per year. It was not a world many migrated to by choice, and due to the high gravity and winds, New Samarkand Metals and the other two mining corporations involved with Matamoras rotated their personnel every five and ten years, respectively.[1]

The DCMS also stationed troops on the planet for a year's training with its high gravity and windstorms. In addition, the Red Clay yakuza clan was known to be heavily involved with Matamoras as well.[1]

Around 2997, a sport known as "wind skirmishing" became popular with Combine youth. Utilizing a gliding bodysuit and paint pellet guns, participants skirmish with one another attempting to inflict the most hits while suffering the least in turn. The Draconis Combine Admiralty became interested enough to create the Matamoras Melee in 3026, with the best-scoring participant gaining entry into the Aerospace and Interstellar Institute on Midway.[1]

Operation BULLDOG[edit]

Matamoras was invaded in the Clan Smoke Jaguar counterattack. The Nineteenth Striker Cluster assaulted the First Free Worlds Guards, Second Night Stalkers, and the Ryuken-yon; though the Clan invaders managed to damage much of the local infrastructure, they were completely wiped out during a night strike.[32]

Geography[edit]

Dominated by desert and rocky terrain, Matamoras is known as the windiest world in the Draconis Combine. With wind speeds known to exceed 400 km/h, the landscape features unusual and aesthetically pleasing sculptures that provide artistic inspiration throughout the Combine.[1]
