Planetary History
Succession Wars
A Place was devastated by famine in the First Succession War, a direct consequence of the decision by Archon Richard Steiner to conscript commercial freighters into military service during the war. Another consequence of this action was that a rising star within the A Place government by the name of Jermyn LeStat decided to defect to the Free Worlds League on the eve of the Second Succession War, taking a substantial quantity of government information with him on a diplomatic mission to Dieudonné. LeStat was debriefed and then returned to A Place as a double agent, where he supplied military information to the Free Worlds League for a number of years before being retrieved by SAFE and smuggled to Dieudonné after it was believed that Lyran intelligence services were closing in on him.[34]
Despite being paid well by the League, LeStat never spent any of the money they paid him; he was motivated solely by a desire to see House Steiner toppled because of the deaths of all his family during the First Succession War famine.[34]
