Planetary Description

Monongahela is a water rich, agricultural world. Prior to the fall of the Star League, a majority of the planet's land area was devoted to meat-animal production while there was a major industry in the harvesting of the native Monongahela Tuna Shark. While not a likely military target in of itself, its strategic location between the Kathil and Novaya Zemlya systems and the Capellan Confederation border gave it a significance that required the presence of a SLDF garrison.[1]

Per Caradoc Trevena, in the post-Succession Wars era, Monongahela had a moderate-sized population, modern industry and a healthy ranching business. [2]

Planetary History

Succession War era

Prior to the Fourth Succession War Monongahela was a forward-deployment base for the Kathil CMM, with the AFFS setting up a number of relatively large military warehouses to support the unit. By this era the planet's militia was both sorely understaffed and under-equipped. [2]

War of 3039

Monongahela was the seventh of the nine worlds targeted by McCarron's Armored Cavalry's deep raid into the Capellan March during the War of 3039, selected both as a stepping stone towards the MAC's intended goal of Kathil and to appropriate any remaining material from the AFFS warehouses. Archibald McCarron entrusted the strike against Monongahela to the 4th McCarron's Armored Cavalry, with Colonel Nicholas Carhart and his unit landing in August 3039. Immediately searching for warehouses, the Fourth MAC scoured the length of the planet, encountering the Monongahela Militia only twice, leaving no survivors from either encounter. As with the other MAC raids, the Fourth spent only a week on-world before lifting off, having scavenged two-hundred and forty-seven tons of miscellaneous supplies and mixed parts.[2]
