Planetary History[edit]

Reunification War[edit]

Originally a world within the Outworlds Alliance, Niles was occupied by forces from the Star League in November 2572 under the terms of Directive 21.[4] Originally, these forces consisted of a battalion of infantry and a battalion of BattleMechs drawn from VI Corps on a rotating basis, with different battalions assigned each year. When General Amos Forlough was put in command of the forces that would be used to conduct Operation UNION HOLD, the Star League invasion of the Outworlds Alliance, he increased the garrison on Niles by adding another infantry battalion and reducing the rotation time for garrison forces to once every two years[51]

By early to mid 2581, preparations for an invasion of the Alliance had reached the point where Star League Defense Force troops were actively being marshalled on the border, and two full divisions of Star League troops from II Corps, the Fourth Royal Infantry Division and the Sixth Royal Division, were deployed forward to Niles before launching the invasion of Sevon, while the Thirteenth Brigade of the Fifth Division deployed onto Niles before attacking Medron. Aided by the local knowledge gained by the garrison forces from VI Corps, the II Corps forces rapidly disarmed the local militia and the Star League assumed actual control of Niles before beginning their attacks deeper into the Outworlds Alliance.[51]

Resistance attacks on Niles were isolated and infrequent during the war, and the planet remained relatively peaceable throughout the conflict.[51] On 1 August 2585, Bad News was ceded to the Draconis Combine along with thirteen other worlds as part of the terms laid out within the Treaty of Cerberus.[5]

Fourth Succession War[edit]

During the early months of the Fourth Succession War Coordinator Takashi Kurita was focused on his conflict with the Wolf's Dragoons mercenary brigade, but following pleas for help from Chancellor Maximilian Liao the DCMS planned and launched additional offensives against perceived weak spots on the Federated Suns border. The various AFFS forces and planetary militias on the planets invaded fought fiercely, slowing the DCMS campaign, and in common with the other theaters of the War, a lull settled over the Combine-Suns border in early 3029.[52]

In May 3029, the DCMS went on the offensive again; in addition to stepping up the tempo of conflict on a number of contested worlds, the DCMS launched fresh attacks. One of the new targets for invasion was Niles, which was hit by the Fourth An Ting Legion in May; the militia fought hard, with one militia regiment managing to hold back an entire battalion from the Fourth for a week, but the Legion claimed the planet for the Combine.[25]
