Planetary Info[edit]

Orestes has four continents, Clytemnestra where the capital city Agamemnon is located, Tantalus, Niobe and Telemachus.[2] In orbit, Orestes has two moons, Parus Major and Parus Minor.[1][2]

The planet was a key world in the Free Rasalhague Republic. The world is quiet and unassuming, except for the massive rainforests that circle the equator. Here trees that tower more than 500 meters tall block out the sun, creating a mood of perpetual twilight at the forest floor. This dim environment allows the Orestes Viper Lizard to thrive as packs of thirty or more of the four-meter long carnivores attack any prey they can find. Hunting them down and preventing them from attacking farmers and factory workers who live near the forest is a full-time job for many people.[1]

Planetary History[edit]

Second Succession War[edit]

As part of the Marathon Offensive, Orestes fell to invading Draconis Combine forces in 2858.[50] The region surrounding Orestes was referred to as the "Orestes salient" during the fighting of the Second Succession War.[51]

Fourth Succession War[edit]

Orestes was captured in the opening wave of Operation GÖTTERDÄMMERUNG in August 3028, the major Lyran Commonwealth offensive of the Fourth Succession War,[24] by the Third Donegal Guards and Fourth Lyran Regulars.[52]

Ronin War[edit]

When the Free Rasalhague Republic began its bid for independence, Vasily Cherenkoff, the Warlord of Dieron, made moves to reclaim the wayward worlds. He was marshalling forces on Orestes when he died in a 'Mech accident in May 3034. The accident is viewed with suspicions to this day and many believe Cherenkoff was assassinated.[53]

Despite Cherenkoff's death, the Draconis Combine forces on world, the Second Night Stalkers, 22nd Rasalhague Regulars and the Altenmarkt Militia, began preparations to raid several worlds. Before they could act however, in July 3034 the 3rd Drakøns arrived with the mercenary units Legion of the Rising Sun and the Dismal Disinherited and they attacked the Combine units. The opening battles saw the Altenmarkt Militia being overrun near the city of Ormunde, but further assaults on the Combine forces were ineffective.[54]

During the fighting however, it was noticed that the Night Stalkers were more concerned with protecting civilians in the nearby city of Kiertenbach than fighting the Republic forces. The commander of the Republic forces reached out to the Night Stalkers and agreed to help evacuate the civilians if the Night Stalkers stood down. Once this was done, the Republic forces were able to concentrate their attack on the remaining unit, the Rasalhague Regulars, and quickly achieved victory.[54]

Operation REVIVAL[edit]

Post-Invasion[edit]

During the Clan Invasion, Orestes was one of the few Rasalhague worlds not overrun and became the de facto capital of the remaining worlds of the Free Rasalhague Republic.[55] The invasion displaced many Lyran, Rasalhagian, and Draconian citizens, and many of them relocated to Orestes. When ComStar pledged to defend the world, it created a booming economy. One of the defenses was Fort Miraborg, constructed with knowledge gained by the study of Castles Brian[56]

Unfortunately many of the jobs that were created went to the newly arrived refugees instead of native Orestians. The higher pay and standard of living these newly employed arrivals enjoyed created a great deal of resentment in the longtime inhabitants of the world. The problem was exacerbated by the rampant corruption in local government caused by the booming economy. Several dissidents called for Ragnar Magnusson to return and take over the world. The resentment boiled over during the Jihad when the Word of Blake raided the world and the Com Guards were unable to prevent it. Several neighborhoods predominately made up of Lyran and Combine citizens were the sites of firebombings and riots. This in turn caused the economy to stall and led to more dissatisfaction.[1]

Jihad[edit]

It was in the ComStar command post on Orestes that Primus Sharilar Mori was assassinated by disaffected members of the ComStar ROM, including the ROM head Victoria Parrdeau, on the 26th of October 3068.[57] Just five days after the assassination of Sharilar Mori the Word of Blake launched an assault on Orestes. While the exact number of attackers isn't known, the Blakist force included at least one WarShip, a division of Word troops and an unidentified contingent of mercenaries; the Blakists fought savagely for a week, finally being routed on the 7th of November having mauled the 104th Division and the 1st Tyr Regiment and inflicted heavy damage on the Dante-class CSV Bordeaux, one of the few WarShips left in service with ComStar after the disastrous Case White.[57]

It was on Orestes on the 21st of August 3070 that Ragnar Magnusson spoke to the Free Rasalhague Republic government on behalf of Clan Ghost Bear and the Ghost Bear Dominion, beginning a series of negotiations to create an accord that would cover "all Rasalhagian peoples."[58] Clan Ghost Bear arrived in 3070 and quietly assumed control of the world with the blessing of the population. The economy began to recover shortly thereafter, and by 3079 the economy and rebuilding effort was years ahead of Merchant caste predictions.[1]

Second Combine-Dominion War[edit]

During the early moves of the Second Combine-Dominion War, the Second Legion of Vega laid siege to the Odin Manufacturing Works on the Clytemnestra continent in an attempt to level the factory. The initial operation was to be a lightning strike to destroy the facility, but the defending First Kavalleri Cluster has been mostly been deployed around the area in expectation of an attack against a vital resource. Thus on April 25, 3099, the week-long siege began with the Combine forces cutting off maglev lines and surface roads between the facility and the world's primary spaceport. Artillery strikes against the manufacturing complex were constant and the entire facility was a ruin by the end of the siege. Seeing the damage the production lines has taken, the Combine forces withdrew before Ghost Bear reinforcements could arrive. Surprisingly, the First Kavalleri and one production line producing the Shadow Hawk BattleMech survived the onslaught.[59][60]

Dark Age[edit]

In 3145, the Second Arkab Legion raided Orestes in a standard raid. However, the defending First Drakøns Cluster escalated the engagement into a major skirmish as part of seeking revenge for the recent loss of Port Moseby to the Combine. The Legion was forced off Orestes, but they gave out more damage to the defenders than they received in turn.[61]
