System Description
The Arcturus system is located near the Leganes and Qualip systems.[5]
System History
The Arcturus system was settled during or shortly after the First Exodus from Terra, and Arcturus was a part of the Tamar Pact prior to the formation of the Lyran Commonwealth in the first half of the twenty-fourth century.[6]
Arcturus V
Template:InfoBoxPlanetStandard Arcturus V - more commonly known simply as Arcturus - is the fifth planet in the Arcuturus system and has served as the capital world of the Lyran Commonwealth. Arcturus has three moons named Donegal, Skye and Tamar.[1][2]
Planetary History
Arcturus was the original capital of the Lyran Commonwealth at their founding in 2341, home to Arcturan Arms and serving as seat of government to the Nine Archons. Eventually, with the Draconis Combine slowly gaining ground in the Tamar Pact to directly threaten Arcturus with an invasion, Archon Marsden proposed a switch of the capital to his own homeworld of Tharkad in the Donegal Protectorate, which was accepted by the other Archons.
The resulting population shift as inhabitants followed the capital has left a series of cities on the world that are vastly oversized for the current population. Many of the citizens moved to the countryside as well, making the cities feel even emptier. Several of these cities remain in use, but with dramatically reduced populations. Many of the rest of them have been destroyed by the environment as nature reclaims the land.[1]
Arcturus' economy shifted focus as well. No longer based on serving the politicians and government, agriculture instead forms the core of the planet's economy. The other noteworthy aspect of the citizenry is their strong (almost fanatical) support of the Steiner family. Many Arcturans joined the LCAF as soon as they can, eager to see more of the nation that their world formerly oversaw.[1]
The Jihad
On the 18th of February 3073 Archon Peter Steiner-Davion gave his blessing to a plan formed by Chandrasekhar Kurita, cousin to former Coordinator of the Draconis Combine Theodore Kurita, to build a base on Arcturus for use by a multinational coalition of forces Chandrasekhar had pulled together to oppose the Word of Blake.[7][8] Sorenson's Sabres were seen operating on Arcturus as a part of Chandrasekhar Kurita's hired forces later in 3073.[9]
On the 11th of May 3073 the Word of Blake attacked Arcturus, targeting the coalition of forces Chandrasekhar Kurita had assembled. Both sides took heavy losses, and yet while the Word of Blake forces had a tactical advantage over the collection of mercenary units and independent forces assembled by Chandrasekhar, the Blakists withdrew unexpectedly.[8][10] Among the casualties inflicted on the Blakists was the loss of a Union-class DropShip, destroyed by an ancient Vulture-class DropShip named the Samhain in service with the Devil's Brigade mercenary unit, a loss which earned the Samhain's pilot a reward for bravery from a grateful Lord Kurita.[11]
On the 15th of May 3074 Archon Adam Steiner announced his engagement to Heather Fyhne, daughter of Duchess Arielle Fyhne, the ruling Duchess of Arcturus.[12][13]
Post-Jihad Era
Having taken heavy damage during the nuclear raids conducted by the Word of Blake during the Jihad, the bulk of the military production on Arcturus had been destroyed; however, the ancient capital of the Alliance rebuilt some of the old armaments factories and began producing arms again, boosting the Alliance's production capabilities in a small way as the battered LAAF rebuilt.[14] In September 3081 Arcturan Arms told the Interstellar News Network that their refit facilities would be producing considerable numbers of the primitive Archer, Commando and Dervish for some decades yet, which the RetroTech 'Mechs seen as being ideal for organizations such as militia forces.[15]
