Description[edit]
Announced online by Catalyst Game Labs as a reward item available for the BattleTech: Clan Invasion crowdfunding campaign which ran from 18 July 2019 to August 18 2019, the Clan Invasion coins were a series of thirty circular or pentagonal coins with a black enamel coating. Initially, only a small number of designs were available, but various stretch level goals expanded the range of coin designs available. The stretch goals were all achieved, initially unlocking each of the original Clans selected for Operation REVIVAL, then the Home Clans and Great Houses, followed by two mercenary commands, Clans that had been annihilated or absorbed prior to Operation REVIVAL, and finally ComStar and the Free Rasalhague Republic. Those coins representing the Clans were pentagonal, while those for Inner Sphere factions were circular. Included as a Great House option was the Federated Commonwealth, and during the Kickstarter process for defining the stretch goals, those pledged at the highest two levels of pledge were consulted on designs to be included.
All of those backing the Kickstarter had the option to add Challenge Coins to their pledge as add-on items, at a cost of US$10 per coin. Various pledge levels received quantities of free coins as a part of their pledge: 1 coin ($20 and above), 4 coins ($600+ pledge), 6 coins ($150 retailer-only pledge) and 8 coins ($5,000 pledge). There was also the option to purchase a Challenge Coins Collector Set containing all 30 faction coins for $250 as an add-on.
Catalyst Game Labs would continue manufacture of Challenge Coins outside of the campaign for mass retail, these "unlimited" coins are cast in antique gold without the enamel fill featured by the campaign exclusive version, with buyers able to purchase coins at $13.00 each or a Collector Set containing all thirty faction coins for $309.00
The BattleTech: Mercenaries crowdfunding campaign running from 23 March 2023 to 20 April 2023 would also see a return of such "Faction Swag", with thirty-eight circular coins featuring a red enamel coating ultimately being produced. Again while initially only a small number of designs were available, various stretch level goals expanded the range.
Product Description[edit]
From Clan Invasion campaign:
“ | From the Diamond Shark merchant caste (also known as our friends from Norse Foundry) comes one special edition Challenge Coin designed for each of the Clans and Great Houses. | ” |
From the Catalyst Game Labs Store:
“ | WHO SAYS YOU CAN'T BUY INITIATIVE?
Challenge coins. The best way to determine first-round initiative or the first round at Valhalla on Solaris VII. Keep one in your pocket at all times, to show your faction pride or steal the initiative at the start of any game. These challenge coins are the "unlimited" version, offered in antique gold without any enamel fill. One for each Successor State, Clan, ComStar, FRR, and two of the Inner Sphere's most celebrated mercenary regiments. Clan Challenge Coins come in pentagonal shape; Inner Sphere coins the more traditional round. There may be some minor flaws (minor pitting, gouges) from the striking process. Each comes in a circular presentation case. |
