The book begins with a short story, an introduction, and then a historical synopsis that traces the history of the Federated Commonwealth; from its beginnings in the FedCom Accords signed by Katrina Steiner and Hanse Davion, to the secession of the Lyran Alliance by Katherine Steiner-Davion, up to the outbreak of war in December 3062.
