Planetary Info

Marfik is a hot world that lacks a thick atmosphere and an ozone layer. As a result the surface of the world is constantly bombarded by radioactivity and cosmic rays. Colonists quickly set up new cities underground or under protective domes. Many Terran plants were imported to the world in an attempt to thicken the atmosphere, and during the Star League era, these were supplemented with atmospheric processors.

Though this was a long-term project, by the time of the Star League the terraforming efforts had paid off. The population could - for the first time - walk on the planet's surface without special breathing equipment or environmental suits. The thicker atmosphere also allowed miners to extract germanium and titanium with relative ease. Unfortunately the conflicts common to the Succession Wars destroyed the atmospheric processors and Marfik's atmosphere returned to its tainted state. The population has once again retreated to underground and domed cities to protect themselves from the radiation.
