The Berenson system was the location of at least one habitable world or construct and as of 3145 was located in the Augustine Alliance province of the Free Worlds League.[1][2]

System Description[edit]

The Berenson system is located close to the Kristiandsund and Menkalinan systems.[3]

System History[edit]

Planetary History[edit]

Early History[edit]

Berenson was notionally a client state of the Capellan Hegemony prior to the war between the Hegemony and the Sarna Supremacy in the early twenty-fourth century, but in 2306, Prime Magnate Paula Aris of the Hegemony negotiated with the Free Worlds League to obtain military support for the war against the Supremacy in exchange for Capellan support for various League territorial campaigns. Much to the embarrassment of Aris and the Hegemony, the military aid provided by the League turned out to be little more than newly trained militia units, and the League also proceeded to occupy both Berenson and the nearby world of Wasat with the intention of reclaiming both.[5]

Within a few years, the newly created Terran Hegemony negotiated the Treaty of Geneva with the Free Worlds League, an agreement which saw the Terran Hegemony's military attentions focused elsewhere, and which also saw Director-General James McKenna repeatedly side with Free Worlds League claims over those of the various Capellan states. One of the first of these acts was the confirmation of the Free Worlds League's possession of Berenson.[6]

At some point after McKenna's declaration in the 2330s, Berenson returned to Capellan control; however, as Federated Suns troops contested numerous worlds along the spinward border of the newly formed Capellan Confederation troops from the Free Worlds League were deployed to take control of Berenson yet again, along with the nearby Zion system. Franco Liao was forced to trade worlds for time as he unified the various disparate Capellan Zone nations into the Capellan Confederation, but despite this Berenson and several other worlds on the anti-spinward border of the Confederation would be contested for a decade, changing hands numerous times.[7]

Succession Wars[edit]

Berenson was captured along with the worlds of Kyrkbacken and Zion by a hugely successful Free Worlds League Military offensive led by the Fusiliers of Oriente that struck the Sarna Commonality of the Capellan Confederation in 2832.[21] While the Free Worlds League was engaged in the ComStar War it was subject to predation at the hands of both of the Lyran Commonwealth and the Capellan Confederation, and in 2840 the Confederation was besieging Berenson when the Fourth Marik Militia led a heroic counterattack against the Capellan forces. Despite their heroics the Fourth fell in battle, and wouldn't be rebuilt until the 3020s.[22]

In early 3024, Bowen Kincaid contracted out the Waco Rangers' reserve battalion under the command of C.H.G. Keller on a short-term basis while he searched for his family's famed Archer, Agincourt, which he wanted to destroy before it could be found by Jake Mason and his Cavaliers mercenary unit, to whom his father had bequeathed it to after he died.[49]

Major Keller's forces were late arriving at a decommissioned base on Bernardo where the Agincourt was once stored, encountering strong resistance from the Cavaliers and forced to withdraw. Luckily for them, it was actually hidden in a city on Berenson and Keller was able to set up a forward operating base and dig in before the Cavaliers arrived. It mattered little, as the Cavaliers overran their defenses and found the 'Mech, killing Bowen Kincaid in the process. With his death, the Waco Rangers withdrew from the field.[49]

Operation GUERRERO[edit]

In June 3054, the Word of Blake-controlled Berenson HPG station was entangled in a complex scheme. As part of a Toyama plot to remove ComStar from the Mercenary Review and Bonding Commission, mercenaries were hired by Precentor Garth Hansen, a Toyama ROM agent disguised as a ComStar representative, to investigate the HPG. Upon arrival, they were attacked with the HPG itself, weaponized to fire a powerful electromagnetic pulse. As a result, the HPG was destroyed in the clash, leading to MRBC charges against the mercenaries.[50] Rebuilding began shortly afterwards.[51] Blakist Adept Ford Eisner, present for and shocked by the attack, revealed what he knew of the plot a few days later, unraveling the scheme.[52]

Jihad[edit]

During the third week of June 3069, the worlds of Berenson, Irian, Procyon, and Sirius were rocked by internal conflict as Free Worlds League Loyalists clashed with local government forces as a result of the local governments and their forces turning against the false Thomas Marik and the government on Atreus.[53]

The Word of Blake held the world during the Jihad, but forces assigned to Duchess Alys Rousset-Marik during Operation SCOUR removed them from the world. Berenson was initially targeted by Group I under the direct command of Rousset-Marik, but discovered that the defenses on the planet were tougher than had initially been expected. Rather than be drawn into a damaging conflict, as had happened elsewhere on the Free Worlds League front, Rousset-Marik withdrew until Group II reinforced Group I, and then the combined forces of both Groups assaulted Berenson, conquering the planet quickly.[42]
