The Second Dieron Regulars are one of the more skilled units of the DCMS Dieron Regulars.

History[edit]

Formation[edit]

The Second Dieron Regulars can claim a heritage that goes back to the Alliance of Galedon and an equally ancient proto-state: the Dieron Federation. One of many twenty-fourth century proto-states in the region of space that in later centuries became known as the Draconis Combine, the Dieron Federation was persuaded to become a part of the Alliance of Galedon in 2310 by Shiro Kurita. As a part of the Alliance, the worlds of the Dieron Federation were required to provide a tithe of people from their population to New Samarkand for military training and indoctrination, with the first draft consisting of some three thousand men and women.[1]

The Alliance's control over the Dieron Federation fluctuated in the early years, as many became aware that they had been duped by Shiro Kurita, and Shiro was required to put down rebellions on a number of worlds, something that he was quite willing to do, invading those systems that attempted to secede and executing their planetary leaders. Dieron broke free in 2316 when the newly-appointed Director-General of the Terran Hegemony began expanding Terran influence once more; enticed by the combination of gentle diplomacy and implicit military threat, Dieron joined the Hegemony, a foe that Shiro was unable to oppose through military strength at the time. Undaunted, Shiro laid the groundwork for reclaiming Dieron by keeping the services of the brigade of Dieron natives who remained steadfastly loyal to House Kurita in his armed forces and retaining the name of the Dieron Regulars as part of the implicit promise that Dieron would once again be a part of the Kuritan state.[1]

Active during the Star League era, five regiments of Dieron Regulars - including the Second - occupied a privileged place within the Draconis Combine Mustered Soldiery. Portrayed in the Combine media as "exiles waiting for the change to go home", the Dieron Regulars spent their time divided between postings in the Benjamin Military District, moving back and forth between worlds in the interior of the District and worlds on the border with the Hegemony. Recruitment into the Dieron Regulars was weighted, with first priority given to Sun Zhang MechWarrior Academy or Dieron Warriors' Academy graduates descended from members of the original Dieron draft, second priority to other personnel who could claim a lineage back to that same draft, Second priority to those recruited from worlds close to Dieron and finally those recruited from other worlds within the Benjamin Military District. As of 2765 all of the 'Mech regimental commanders within the Dieron Regulars were both Sun Zhang graduates and descendants of the Dieron draft. As with the other Dieron Regiments, the Second Dieron Regulars was the centerpiece of a brigade consisting of a 'Mech regiment, three medium armor regiments, three infantry regiments and up to four independent artillery regiments.[1]

First Succession War[edit]

Just prior to the war the unit was stationed on Shimonita.[1]

Third Succession War[edit]

In 3025 the unit was stationed on Shionoha.[2]

War of 3039[edit]

Reinforced Vega in the Battle of Vega. They joined the 2nd Legion of Vega and the 14th Legion of Vega and fought Snord's Irregulars, the 3rd Davion Guards, and the 1st Grave Walkers. The Second and the two Legion of Vega units were able to drive the Federated Commonwealth forces out of the system.[3][4] They then returned to their garrison on Cebalrai.[5]

Clan Invasion[edit]

The unit acted as training cadre for other regiments during Operation REVIVAL. They were stationed on Cebalrai in 3050.[6] The commander of the Second petitioned for permission to raid the LexaTech LAM factory on Irece. The Kanrei refused the request because the plant had been destroyed.[7]

Operation BULLDOG[edit]

During the Operation the planet Jeanette was liberated through a task force which includes the Second Dieron Regulars, First Amphigean Light Assault Group, First Aragon Borderers, Warrior House Dai Da Chi and the Crater Cobras. The defending Nova Cat Lancers gave the ownership of the planet back to the DCMS after a trial of possession, which they lost. The Second also helped liberate Albiero.[citation needed]

Xin Sheng Campaign[edit]

The Second Dieron Regulars were part of the SLDF peacekeeping force deployed to the St. Ives Compact. They landed on Vesthallas and ordered the defenders to disarm. Aliesha's Mounted Fusiliers and the militia unit refused, and the Second engaged the defending units. They pushed the Fusiliers off of Vesthallas.[8]

Dominion War[edit]

They guarded the border against possible invasions.[citation needed]

Federated Suns Incursion[edit]

The command acted as a reserve unit if the war goes on.[citation needed]

Jihad[edit]

In 3077 the Second Dieron Regulars was one of two units to fight alongside Clan Ghost Bear forces on Dieron. Their air wing, the Dragon-kin, was decimated on the way to the planet but the ground units landed with few casualties. That changed when the Second Dieron encountered the Word of Blake's Nineteenth Division. The Nineteenth used a Luthien Armor Works facility as their headquarters, and the Second Dieron took serious losses breaching the facility's defenses. The Blakists had the last word however, killing most of the Second Dieron Regulars command structure when they detonated several nuclear warheads and destroyed the LAW facility.[9]

Later they joined Operation SCOUR as a part of the Draconis Combine front task force,[10] saw some combat on Styx in 3077[11] and participated in the assault on Cairo.[12] During the combat drop, Blakist surface-to-air fire destroyed about half the unit. After the Jihad ended, they returned to Dieron.[13]

With the formation of The Republic of the Sphere the Dieron Military District was eliminated. The Second Dieron Regulars were reassigned to the New Samarkand Military District and renamed the Second New Samarkand Regulars.[14]

Dark Age Era[edit]

Re-formed with the Dieron Military District was officially reborn in 3135, hopes are high that this new regiment will live up to the famous version of the Second lost in the Jihad era.[15]

As part of Operation ERUPTIO, the RAF's First Army Group landed on Dieron, home of the 1st Dieron Regulars and Second Dieron regulars. The Second was attacked and heavily damaged by the X Hastati Sentinels and 1st Fides Defenders. Though Tai-shu Kambei Okamoto tried to rally the Second, they instead moved into the vast Fortress Dieron complex. The First Fides battle armor battalion infiltrated Fortress Dieron and forced the Second out into the field against the RAF forces where they took heavy losses.[16]

Late March 3150 found the Second Dieron Regulars split across Altair and Fomalhaut. The First Battalion and supporting troops landed on Altair, overwhelming the militia and taking few prisoners. The Second and Third Battalions were assigned to Fomalhaut. The Dieron Regulars faced more opposition here due to the presence of the Aquamarines mercenary command. The mercenary unit was a combined arms battalion with extensive experience with amphibious operations. The mercs were also willing to use dishonorable tactics, and their experience with coastal operations allowed them to destroy the Second's bases and outposts along the coastline. Eventually the Second Dieron forces captured and executed the Aquamarines' commander. This destroyed the defender's morale, and the mercenary unit disappeared into the civilian population.[17][18]

Notes[edit]

During the Star League era the Dieron Regulars battalions were frequently guests of the various planetary governors of worlds close to the border between the Hegemony and the Combine, and all of the senior staff were thoroughly trained in both diplomacy and protocol.[1]

Tactics[edit]

During the Star League era the Second was considered to be a well-trained military force, but the Second's command staff had a tendency to waste their infantry and armor forces on feints or security missions.[1]

By the end of the Third Succession War the Second had specialized in mountain combat, utilizing light BattleMechs.[23]

In the War of 3039 the Second used ambushes, fires, false flags, and other "dishonorable" tactics in order to win. Victory at all costs was their motto.[4]
