The Word of Blake's Twenty-second Militia struck at Brusett on the 30th of May 3075. The Vendetta returned to the Brusett system in mid-September 3076, having been forced to retreat from the Firgrove system in August. More than one city was ravaged as incidental casualties of the bitter struggle for Brusett; the city of Brisborough suffered raging fires through the industrial sector of the city and elsewhere after Taurian partisans detonated a nuclear demolition charge inside the city in an attempt to catch advancing Federated Suns forces. With the fires burning for more than two weeks, much of the citizenry was evacuated to Brisborough's sister city, Cardow. The use of booby traps by Taurian forces was so extensive that many of the urban and industrial sites being fought over were reduced to a scorched wasteland, even before the AFFS forces resorted to having the areas ahead of their advance bombed to try and clear traps from their path. System Information
X:Y Coordinates245.56:-328.12[e]

The Brusett system was home to at least one habitable world and as at 3145 was located in the June Operational Area of the Periphery March within the Federated Suns.[1][2]

System Description

The Brusett system is located near the Kautokeino and Werfer systems.[3][4]

System History

The Brusett system was settled during or soon after the First Exodus from Terra.[5]

Political Affiliation

Planetary History

By 2305, Brusett was considered to be a client state of the Capellan Hegemony, but in a sign of events to come the Capellan interests on Brusett were already being contested diplomatically by various mercantile interests backed by the Davion family, highlighting the biggest internal problem suffered by the Capellan Hegemony - just how far-flung the borders of the Hegemony were, outside of the Hegemony core systems.[5]

The Jihad

During the Jihad, the Taurian Concordat attempted to recapture Brusett, which had been annexed by the Federated Suns during the Reunification War. Mercenaries employed by the Concordat managed to briefly capture Brusett on the 15th of September 3071, as part of a continuing campaign against the Federated Suns.[31][32] The Concordat attacked Brusett again in January 3075, with the newly-formed Fourth Taurian Lancers deploying to capture the world. The Lancers encountered elements of the mercenary unit Hansen's Roughriders on Brusett, and were unable to destroy the Roughriders despite bombing Brusett's spaceport and capital city with nuclear weapons; the Roughriders then managed to successfully ambush the Taurian Lancers, destroying the unit.[33][34]

The Word of Blake's Twenty-second Militia Division struck at Brusett on the 30th of May 3075. The Federated Suns responded by mustering and deploying a small flotilla of ships including the WarShip FCS Kathil to the system to stave off an anticipated attack by the Concordat; the Taurians had already taken advantage of the raid on Wrentham by the Twenty-second to seize that world. Taurian forces arrived in the Brusett system in late June, and on the 30th of June the Taurian Quixote-class WarShip TCS Vendetta and the FSS Kathil battled over Brusett. The Vendetta was forced to retreat, but the Kathil was lost in the battle, and several major cities on the planet suffered horrendous collateral damage due to the nuclear weapons both sides used in orbit and within the atmosphere of Brusett.[35][36] While the Taurian forces used nuclear weapons against the Kathil, the defending AFFS forces used nuclear weapons to drive off the Vendetta and then again to destroy the DropShips launched by the Taurians; casualties amongst the civilian population from the nuclear weapons were estimated to be in the millions.[37]

The Vendetta returned to the Brusett system in mid-September 3076, having been forced to retreat from the Firgrove system in August. The Vendetta and her task force put Brusett under siege, but the siege would only last until the 2nd of October; the arrival of the FSS New Syrtis and resulting naval battle saw the Federated Suns WarShip suffering crippling damage, but not before enough critical damage was inflicted on the Vendetta by the New Syrtis and her escorts to force the Vendetta to retreat.[38][39] As the end of 3076 approached and the Taurian forces on Brusett were faced with imminent defeat, they resorted to using scorched earth tactics to destroy as many of the Federated Suns ground forces on the planet as possible. These scorched earth tactics often involved the use of nuclear devices, causing carnage; this damage was exacerbated by the Federated Suns Pocket WarShips which shelled the Taurian positions repeatedly.[40][39]

More than one city was ravaged as incidental casualties of the bitter struggle for Brusett; the city of Brisborough suffered raging fires throughout the industrial sector of the city and elsewhere after Taurian partisans detonated a nuclear demolition charge inside the city in an attempt to catch advancing Federated Suns forces. One of the local partisan commanders, Cornet David Wilson, openly stated to members of the Taurian press that the Taurian partisans that they would prefer to see the Brusett scorched rather than reclaimed by the Federated Suns.[41]
