One of the first worlds settled by the Azami,[1] Markab's economy is primarily based on the production and export of petrochemicals, particularly hydrocarbons and precious metals. The Azami quickly overcame the biological taint in the atmosphere, but DCMS forces were not immune to it.[48] After losing many soldiers, the Combine and the Azami came to an agreement that saw the Arkab Legions serving the Dragon.[49] As a result of the early conflict, many of Markab's water purification stations were destroyed in Combine raids. In fact it was only in the early thirty-second century that water purification technology had advanced to the point that Markab's inhabitants could use seawater for irrigation.[1]

Planetary History[edit]

Age of War[edit]

Markab was originally settled sometime during the twenty-fifth century when the Azami left Terra in order to colonize the stars.[50]

Dark Age[edit]

As the homeworld of Republic Senator Conner Rhys-Monroe, Markab became a rebel stronghold when the Senate Rebellion broke out in 3135. Following the enactment of Fortress Republic later that year, Markab was for a time a hub of resistance to the Draconis Combine's inroads into former Republic territory. With Rhys-Monroe's death in battle in 3140 organized opposition to the Combine collapsed and Markab was absorbed into the Dieron Military District.[51][43]

Geography[edit]

Markab is very similar to Terra's Middle East and North African regions. The land is dry and windblown, forming a single supercontinent named Al-Qoradana which has very few inland rivers or bodies of water. Several islands can also be found in Markab's oceans, but the settlers predominantly live on the main landmass.[1]
