Gustrell was a part of the Apollo Province of the Rim Worlds Republic.[1] By 3025, it was a part of the Oberon Confederation.[2][3]

In 2746, the Second Lyran Guards were deployed to Gustrell. Gustrell was located inside the Rim Worlds Republic's borders but considered itself an independent world, despite the lack of a local 'Mech garrison. The deployment of the Second Guards was prompted by evidence discovered by the LIC indicating that a mercenary unit under contract to Gustrell's planetary government was responsible for a brutal assault on a Lyran research station in the Dark Nebula. The Second quickly destroyed the armor and infantry units that garrisoned Gustrell, and in two days had captured the planet's senate building. The Guards' actions became known as the Gustrell Massacre after images of burned infantrymen were broadcast throughout the Inner Sphere. The Second remained on world until a Rim Worlds Republic garrison force could arrive. During that time the LIC completed their investigation and discovered that the mercenaries that had prompted the invasion operated on their own, without aid or comfort from the Gustrell planetary government.[37]

The Fourth Amaris Dragoons was assigned to Gustrell in the wake of the massacre, under the command of Colonel Xatt Dague. Dague quickly distinguished himself, working to coordinate the actions of the Fourth Dragoons and the Second Guards, as well as challenging the Lyrans to Gunslinger-style duels that soon earned him the nickname "Eagle Eye." After the LCAF regiment left Gustrell, Dague continued to build a name for himself by performing at military parades in a concerted effort to generate more interest in the Rim Worlds Army.[38]

Clan Invasion[edit]

During Operation REVIVAL in August 3049, Gustrell came under attack by Clan Wolf. The defending Gustrell Guards, two battalions of mechanized infantry, faced off against the Red Keshik of Delta Galaxy in the Pellembroke Woods. Despite having prepared fortified positions in the heavily forested terrain, the defenders were easily overrun and the planet conquered by Clan Wolf.[39]

Jihad[edit]

Clan Hell's Horses controlled the system in the late Jihad. In 3085 however, the Horses withdrew, leaving Gustrell on its own. The citizens of Gustrell reached out to several nearby star systems and negotiated with those systems to form the Republic of the Barrens.[40] At some point after the Republic's founding, Gustrell became the nation's capital.[36]

Dark Age[edit]

During the 3140s, the Oberon Confederation swelled in power due to an influx of mechs, shifting the balance of power within the Barrens. In 3144 the Confederation assaulted the Republic while their traditional allies in Clan Hell's Horses were distracted on other fronts. By 3147, Gustrell had fallen to the invaders.[34]

ilClan Era[edit]

In 3150, Khan Gottfried Amirault dispatched Alpha Galaxy's Twenty-second Mechanized Assault Cluster to liberate Gustrell from Oberonian occupation. Star Colonel Danielle Cobb led Horse forces to retake the planetary capital of Sarah, dueling and very nearly suffering defeat at the hands of Abdoun Ricol.[36]

  • Sarah: The planetary capital city. Sarah had been destroyed and rebuilt many times since the fall of the Rim Worlds Republic. After the formation of the Republic of the Barrens, Sarah played host to that nation's senate building.[36]
