System Description[edit]
The Joppa system was home to at least one habitable world, Joppa II, and as of 3151 was located in the Victoria Commonality in the Capellan Confederation.[2]
System History[edit]
The Joppa system was first settled by the Star League Defense Force during the Periphery Uprising of 2765–2766, when they established a minor waystation on Joppa IV's moon Specula and a colony on Joppa II to support it.[1]

Planetary History[edit]
Star League Era[edit]
Joppa II, considered only marginally habitable, was colonized by dependents of the Star League Defense Force during the Periphery Uprising to support the more-important naval waystation on Specula. A biosphere incompatible with Terran life and thin atmosphere forced the colony to rely on greenhouses and hydroponics facilities to produce food. The world was and remained essentially a city state, with almost the entirety of the population centered on Gigli, the planetary capital.[1]
Succession Wars[edit]
Joppa's water supply only required primitive (but energy intensive) filtration, allowing the world to survive and even export fresh water during the technological decline of the Succession Wars. The Joppans worked hard to maintain nearby Specula and in the process preserved more advanced technology than was typical in the Periphery. Joppa was however forced to do business with all comers to survive the era, including Pirates.[1]
Republic Era[edit]
In 3130 the Magistracy of Canopus relinquished sovereignty over Joppa to the Capellan Confederation. Though the transition was initially orderly, the Confederation began shipping in citizens en mass to accelerate the system's economic development. As a result the population grew at a rate that strained Joppa's food supply, causing widespread discontent.[53]
ilClan Era[edit]
In March 3151 a protest movement by former Canopian citizens (and supported from outside the system by the Magistracy First Movement) broke out. Planetary diem Lang Fao reacted less harshly that would be typical in Capellan space under the advice of Janice Lakada, the worlds' leader prior to Capellan rule, but despite their efforts the Home Guard panicked and attacked the demonstrators, escalating the situation.[53] News of their allies oppressing their former citizens infuriated the Canopian public, causing public opinion to swing heavily in favour of dissolving the alliance between the two states and against Ilsa Centrella-Liao.[54]
Regent Erde Centrella dispatched the First Canopian Light Horse to Joppa in an attempt to calm the situation.[54] Arriving on June 3, the Light Horse presented themselves as relief for the beleaguered Home Guard but released the imprisoned protestors before forcibly disarming and arresting the stunned Capellan forces. The Magistracy's de-facto occupation of Joppa was met with public celebration, largely because the Light Horse arrived with several DropShips worth of food aid and agricultural equipment they distributed to both Capellan and Canopian Joppans.[55]

Planetary History[edit]
Specula is an airless, slowly rotating planet-scale moon that suffers extreme temperature swings. Despite the world's hostility Specula served as an SLDF naval support station and repair yard during the Periphery Uprising, and the moon has always been of more importance to the system's neighbours than Joppa. The world is host to numerous fuel dumps, warehouses and machine shops which service orbital facilities and passing spacecraft. The moon's inhabitants commute using primitive chemical rockets which are easily maintained by local industry.[1]
Specula Station was stripped of technology during the Succession Wars but prospered as a trading hub and transshipment point between neighbouring systems.[53] Although the system's are inhabitants are ashamed that pirates once openly trafficked enslaved persons through the station, the lack of scruples on Specula enabled the system as a whole to survive and maintain its relatively advanced level of technology. The Magistracy of Canopus and, after 3130, Capellan Confederation invested massively into Specula's orbital yards.[1]
Notes[edit]
The star map in the apocryphal BattleTech video game, set in 3025, stated that the only permanent settlement in the Joppa system was in a repurposed SLDF station on Specula, a moon orbiting a gas giant. Specula had no resources of its own, but served as a trade hub for the nearby systems.[59]
