The database of the (apocryphal) 1989 video game MechWarrior, set around the year 3025, gives a population of 879 million for Timbuktu and describes the environment as "desert" (out of only three broad impressions of planetary environments given in the game, these being "desert," "ice," and "tropical").
Planetary History
By 2571, after the Age of War, Timbuktu was the provincial capital of the Timbuktu Province of the Rim Worlds Republic.[6]
Reunification War
Civil war erupted in the Rim Worlds Republic in 2575, with the factions polarized around those loyal to First Consul Gregory Amaris and those loyal to the Rim Provisional Government.[43] By 2581, Timbuktu was garrisoned by the Seventh Amaris Dragoons, a regiment which had chosen to remain loyal to Amaris.[44] The Star League eventually decided to intervene in support of Amaris and assembled Task Force MAILED FIST, a multinational force headed by the Star League Defense Force, but atrocities such as the one performed by the Draconis Auxiliary Corps when they captured Nightwish in mid-2584 resulted in the Rim Worlders putting aside their differences to focus on the common enemy.[45]
The Seventh Amaris Dragoons were still the main defensive force on-planet when Battlegroup Timbuktu arrived at the start of July 2588 and the SLDF strategy had shifted to reducing the Rim Worlds Army, no matter their loyalties. Duke Narinder Selaj assigned the SLDF IV Corps' Eleventh Royal Division to the conquest of Timbuktu and they were accompanied by all four regiments of the despised Draconis Auxiliary Corps. The first week of the campaign saw the elite Eleventh Royal and the brutal Draconis regiments easily smash their way through the bulk of the defenses prepared by Macao's forces. This made Macao pull his troops back to the continent of Hades, which was lightly populated with a number of mining complexes that the Seventh could use as prebuilt defenses.[46]
While the Seventh Amaris Dragoons could have drawn the campaign out substantially by switching to guerrilla warfare, the harsh treatment the Timbuktu civilian population was enduring at the hands of the Draconis troops enraged Macao, provoking him into launching a number of retaliatory rash attacks that sorely weakened the Seventh. With the civilian population of Hades being small enough that it was effectively negligible for the SLDF to consider, Battlegroup Timbuktu forces resorted to wholesale bombardment of the Seventh's positions. After nineteen days, Macao surrendered the few surviving elements of the Dragoons, which ended major combat actions on the planet on the 29th of July.[46]
Amaris Civil War
Timbuktu was conquered by the Lyran Commonwealth during the 2773-2775 Republic-Commonwealth War.[16]
Succession Wars era
Situated near the Lyran Commonwealth's Periphery border, Timbuktu suffered heavily from pirate attacks throughout the Succession Wars. In 3023, neo-smallpox struck over half the population. By 3025, Timbuktu had little industry and could barely produce enough food due to its harsh environment and relative lack of minerals.[1][2]
FedCom Civil War era
By 3067, Timbuktu had recovered from the effects of the pirate raids and plague, its people promoting their world as a nexus of Lyran Alliance–Rim Collection trade.[2]
Dark Age
In the aftermath of the Jihad, Timbuktu served as a coordination hub for anti-pirate missions and trade with the nearby Rim Collection.[3]
As the Lyran Commonwealth suffered setback after setback during the 3140s and grew seriously weakened, Timbuktu and a number of neighboring worlds decided to secede in June 3148 and merge with the Rim Collection to create a new nation: the Timbuktu Collective.[42]
