Planetary History

By the end of the Age of War Urjala was a part of the Timbuktu Province of the Rim Worlds Republic.[4] In 2583 civil war had been raging within the Rim Worlds Republic for eight years, fought between supporters of First Consul Gregory Amaris and supporters of the Rim Provisional Government, and Urjala was the garrison posting of a contingent from the Fourth Amaris Fusiliers, a unit that had taken up the RPG cause.[2]

The Star League Defense Force had created a task named Task Force MAILED FIST following the decision by the Star League to intervene in the civil war and restore Amaris to power. The Star League had initiated Operation MAILED FIST in mid-2581, but the SLDF plans had been forced to change after a deep raid by a contingent drawn from the Fourth had managed to strike evade all of the SLDF and LCAF border patrols and struck at the Lyran Commonwealth interior world of Alarion.[5]

The result was the reorganisation of the SLDF forces and their auxiliaries into three battlegroups, each responsible for the pacification of one of the three provinces that made up the Rim Worlds Republic.[6] Urjala and the Fourth Fusiliers were targets of the battlegroup assigned to pacifying the Timbuktu Province, and the SLDF deployed the three units drawn from the 2nd Marik Auxiliary Corps - the Second Brigade of the Fusiliers of Oriente, the Second Regulan Hussars and the Second Defenders of Andurien - to secure the world.[7]

The Free Worlds League forces quickly defeated the Fourth Fusiliers in the field but soon discovered that actually holding Urjala was far harder than capturing it; just as with other captured worlds the FWLM forces lacked the number of boots on the ground needed to control so much territory, and as a result insurgents were quickly weakening the occupying forces. Control over the world wasn't secured by the Timbuktu Battle Group until after the decision was made to redeploy part of the Free Worlds League garrison from Bolan to Urjala to boost the number of troops present on the planet.[7]

Star League Era

During the closing years of the Star League era Urjala was conquered by the Lyran Commonwealth during the 2773-2775 Republic-Commonwealth war.[8]
