System Description[edit]
The Altais system has a single F2IV primary around which orbits a single planet; at some point during the formation of the system a second planet failed to form, and debris from that failed planet is still present in the system.[1]
System History[edit]
The Altais system was settled prior to the Age of War and possibly during the First Exodus from Terra.[3]

Altais I - more commonly referred to simply as Altais - is the only surviving planet in the Altais system. Altais lacks any moons.[1]
Planetary History[edit]
Early History[edit]
Covered by active volcanoes, Altais was settled for its large amount of radioactive ores. These ores were spewed out of the planet's surface by the volcanoes. Within a century of humanity's arrival, a small meteor slammed into the ocean near a tectonic fault line. The resulting earthquakes lasted for decades and destroyed several major cities.[1]
Since that time, the volcanoes have continued to spew greenhouse gases into the atmosphere, raising the planet's surface temperature by 12° in 500 years. Thousands of native plant and animal species have been driven to extinction by the severe climate change, and the jungles and prairies that attracted the original settlers have been replaced by rock-strewn wastelands.[1]
Star League[edit]
During the final years of the Star League, Altais was the host to a Star League Defense Force garrison.[45]
War of 3039[edit]
In the War of 3039 Altais was garrisoned by the First Ghost and Second Ghost regiments. They Eighth Donegal Guards, Dragonslayers, and Gray Death Legion invaded in the first wave of the Commonwealth Thrust resulting in the Battle of Altais. Though the Ghosts fought well, they had to withdraw after two months of fighting.[46] The world would be isolated in the DCMS counterattack, however, and in November 3039 the LCAF withdrew.[47]
Jihad[edit]
Between the 7th and 14th of August 3068 Altais was one of six worlds raided by a combination of small 'Mech units in the employ of the Draconis March of the Federated Suns and teams of Federated Suns commandos. The deep objective raids targeted undefended worlds, allegedly to find and liberate prisoners of war in captivity within the Combine since the FedCom Civil War. The six worlds targeted were Altais, Barlow's Folly, Beta Mensae V, Chichibu, Junction and Misery, and apparently some prisoners of war were discovered.[48]
Dark Age[edit]
Despite the increasing temperature and oppressive atmosphere found on Altais the world continued to remain a settled world during the Dark Age, inhabited out of a combination of desire to exploit the metal ores constantly spewed out by the active volcanoes on the planet and sheer human stubbornness. All four continents on the planet were home to at least one human city, with four mining and refining corporations operating on Tanzaria and additional mining and refinery operations being conducted on Lesser Elauria and Welasia.[1]

Geography[edit]
The surface of Altais is formed from three tectonic plates and the planet has been geologically unstable for almost a millennia following the comet strike early in the history of the human occupation of the planet. There are four major continents on Altais named Greater Elauria, Lesser Elauria, Tanzaria and Welasia. Of these four continents Lesser Elauria and Welasia are located in the northern hemisphere while Greater Elauria lies on the equator; Tanzaria is located at the south pole.[1]
Planetary Locations[edit]
- Carlingford: a spaceport:[52]
- Gaines: the planetary capital city, located on Tanzaria.[1]
- New Ross: a spaceport.[52]
- Novaya Kyev: a domed city located on Greater Elauria; site of shipping ports for both off-world trade and transoceanic traffic.[1]
- Willas: a spaceport.[52]
