The Marantha system was home to at least one habitable world, Marantha IV, and as of 3151 was located in the Magistracy of Canopus.[2]

System Description[edit]

Marantha is located near the Booker and Gambilon systems[3][4] and consists of a class K5V primary orbited by at least four worlds. During the thirty-first century a recharge station was in place at the system nadir jump point.[1]

System History[edit]

The Marantha system was colonized at some point prior to the end of the Age of War.[5][6]

Marantha IV, more commonly known simply as Marantha, is the fourth planet in the Marantha system and during the thirty-first century was the location of a notable military academy as well as manufacturing facilities operated by the Alliance Aerospace Group.[1]

Planetary History[edit]

Reunification War[edit]

Settled at some point prior to the end of the Age of War[5] Marantha was a member of the Magistracy of Canopus when a Star League Defense Force task force under the command of Captain-General Marion Marik was assigned to conquer the Magistracy of Canopus in 2577. Marantha was targeted by the SLDF following the capture of Canopus IV, with the VII Corps' Fifty-sixth Brigade landing in late 2584 with support from the Fourth Marik Militia and the Third Regulan Hussars. The SLDF invasion was fiercely contested by the First Canopian Light Horse and Mieselsen's Marauders despite being outnumbered more than two to one, and the resulting battle saw the Marauders effectively destroyed as a combat unit although the Light Horse managed to escape off-world.[8][47]

Marantha would be occupied by the SLDF for the remainder of the war; once the Reunification War ended, a number of Magistracy worlds were annexed by the Free Worlds League, but Marantha remained a part of the Magistracy.[8][9]

Reign of the Star League[edit]

During the Star League era Marantha was home to the Magistracy Aerospace Academy (MAA); Marantha had been chosen to host the MAA for a number of reasons, including the civilian spacecraft industry in the system, which was already substantial, and the combination of the large asteroid belt - considered ideal for certain kinds of training - and presence of a significantly sized population of Belters living there.[48]

Fall of the Star League[edit]

During the final years of the Star League, Marantha was the host to a Star League Defense Force garrison.[49]

Succession Wars[edit]

Marantha appeared beautiful to the original settlers, but they quickly discovered that the soil lacked certain components required by Terran crops. The answer was a series of tailored crops, but in the 2980s a series of famines reduced the planet's agricultural industry to a subsistence level. Despite these problems, Maranthan brandy - produced from native fruit - was still being exported in 3079.[50]

Dark Age[edit]

In early April 3150, the Marian Hegemony conquered the world, only to be forced out by the Magistracy in early May.[45]
