The Alkaid system is a binary star system with two planets, one of which - Alkaid II - is habitable, and as of 3151 was located in the Clan Jade Falcon Occupation Zone.[2]

System Description[edit]

The Alkaid system has two stars, one type B1V and one type G2V.[1]

System History[edit]

The Alkaid system was discovered at an early stage during humanity's manned exploration of interstellar space, but wasn't settled until some years later due in part to the long transit time between the system jump points and the one habitable world.[1]

Alkaid II, more commonly referred to simply as Alkaid, is the second planet in the Alkaid system and has a single moon named "Vishnu". Alkaid has been home to a substantial chemical industry for centuries,[1] including hosting such companies as Toloy Chemicals.

Planetary History[edit]

Despite having been discovered at an early point in the human exploration of space, Alkaid wasn't settled until some years later. Alkaid was mostly desert with little to recommend it for colonization, particularly with more suitable worlds ready for settlement. Alkaid's position in the system further discouraged colonization: Traveling from the standard jump points to the world takes four months, and the planet's orbit around the sun takes fifty-one Terran years. In the early twenty-fourth century, explorers from the Federation of Skye discovered a plethora of chemicals and ores located just beneath Alkaid's surface. With this economic impetus, colonization began and the first permanent settlements were established.[1]

During the Jihad a Lyran unit was trapped on the world by Word of Blake forces. The Lyrans fought as insurgents until the Blakists withdrew from the world.[1]

Dark Age[edit]

During the Jade Falcon desant of 3134, Alkaid was one of several Republic worlds targeted. Rather than use overwhelming force and risk collateral damage, Aleksandr Hazen instead challenged the planetary government to fight his Trinary with a militia battalion in an isolated desert location. At the agreed-upon battlefield Hazen proceeded to defeat the militia and win the planet for his Clan.[39] Hazen kept his promise to treat the Alkaidians fairly and cause little disruption to their lives rather than impose Clan culture upon them, resulting in little resistance to their new overlords and favorable testimonials that Hazen broadcast to his next target, Summer.[44] [45]

Alkaid was raided by Lyran-employed mercenaries in 3136.[46]

By the time the Lyran Commonwealth mounted Operation Black Ice in late 3150, Alkaid had an anti-Falcon insurgency already underway, and with its history of successful resistance to occupying powers proved to be a ripe target. A Loki team linked up with local resistance leaders and equipped them with weaponry and explosives tailored towards weakening the Falcons' grip on Alkaid. Well versed in Falcon military and governmental patterns, the insurgents undertook a campaign so devastating that Clan control on Alkaid shrunk to the spaceport, and that was under siege by the resistance.[47]

Geography[edit]

Alkaid has two landmasses named Khalek, a large polar continent, and Inahalia, the southern supercontinent.[1][39]
