In the spring of 2497 the Draconis Combine invaded Algedi in order to bring the Azami worlds into the Combine. The invading force began with a demand for immediate integration into the Combine, the abandonment of the Azami's religion, and immediate adoption of the Dictum Honorium. The Azami who were meeting with the invaders refused the request, and were executed on the spot. The Combine forces went on to begin systematically burning Azami settlements to the ground, with the Azami, under equipped to wage a strong resistance, were only able to stage night raids of limited success. In 2516 the Azami decided to join the Draconis Combine, knowing full well that another invasion would be coming from them in time if they did not. The Combine agreed to take the Azami into their fold, peacefully. In exchange for inclusion into the Combine, the Azami would be required to keep their religion a secret from outsiders and the rest of the combine, and to integrate into the Draconis Combine. It was also agreed that half of the world would remain off-limits to those not of Azami descent, an agreement that would hold even during the dark days of the Jihad, albeit tentatively at times.

Star League
During the Succession Wars era the ISF maintained a large contingent on the world, but they kept a low profile. The ISF rated Algedi as a high priority because the Azami who lived on the world weren't technically subjects of the Dragon, but rather an ally. The Combine operated a number of mining concerns across the wastelands, extracting materials required for manufacturing. Despite a long history of dissent between the Azami population and the central government of the Combine, Algedi served as the Prefecture Capital of the Algedi Prefecture for several centuries.

Succession Wars
On the 11th of August 3071, following a rogue asteroid strike on Arkab and a perceived lack of assistance from the government of the Draconis Combine, the Azami leadership recalled all of the remaining Arkab Legions back to Algedi, against the orders of the Coordinator. A few months later on the 12th of November Coordinator Hohiro Kurita II issued an ultimatum to the Azami on Algedi, demanding that the Arkab Legions either "mobilize for the Dragon's defense or face the Dragon's wrath."

The form of this promised wrath became clear in late January 3072, when the Kirishima-class WarShip Siriwan arrived bearing an ultimatum from Gunji-no-Kanrei Kiyomori Minamoto. =====Third Succession War=====
 +
By 3025 there had been much talk about moving the prefecture capital to a planet where the bureaucracy could function effectively, nothing happened, even though with the most modern equipment, paperwork in Algedi Prefecture was in a perpetual snarl.

The Sword of the Prophet Enterprises facility located near the city of Agadir on Algedi Secundus began manufacturing Primitive BattleMechs during the Jihad, producing both Dervishes and Gladiators from the plant by 3079; Algedi also went on to open a military college, the Algedi War College, which completed construction in or near Algiers in time to open for the first class of students in 3075. Despite the disruption caused by the Jihad the civilian manufacturer Cairo Enterprises continued to operate their facility in the Alexandrian Wastes, producing a range of civilian vehicles used across the various Azami worlds; the Scarborough Manufacturing Annex in Algiers also managed to keep manufacturing output up during the critical years of the Jihad, escaping the damage inflicted on the plants located on Al Na'ir and Quentin.

Jihad
On the 11th of August 3071, following a rogue asteroid strike on Arkab and a perceived lack of assistance from the government of the Draconis Combine, the Azami leadership recalled all of the remaining Arkab Legions back to Algedi, against the orders of the Coordinator. A few months later on the 12th of November Coordinator Hohiro Kurita II issued an ultimatum to the Azami on Algedi, demanding that the Arkab Legions either "mobilize for the Dragon's defense or face the Dragon's wrath."

The dramatic increase in heavy industry on Algedi was notable as early as 3075, as was other evidence of the split between the Azami and the Combine; traditional cultural Azami practises were usually conducted out of sight within the Combine, to prevent the Azami from standing out from the general population, but those practises were being conducted openly on Algedi, and the resentment towards the Combine was open. The Azami appeared united, but not only by their shared frustration at the Combine; the Azami had become strongly negative towards all outsiders. By 3076 a number of new mining concerns had been established in the wastelands of Algedi, founded with exclusive trade agreements with the Azami alone, not with the Combine. The ISF was taking an active interest in these new concerns, as well as trying to penetrate the security around Cairo Enterprises, which was operating as a subsidiary of Buda Imperial Vehicles but only supplying the Azami. The consistent failure of ISF attempts to penetrate the complex and determine what was being constructed in a newly-built annex raised flags for the ISF that their local operations may have been penetrated in turn by the Azami.

The Siriwan bombarded two of the Azami cities before being destroyed in orbit by nuclear weapons. The DCMS sent troops armed with tactical nuclear weapons to liberate the captives taken during the abortive assault by the Siriwan, and those troops managed to breach the defenses on Algedi on the 12th of April.

Towards the end of the Jihad the Combine government was hoping to defuse the high tensions on Algedi between the Azami and the central government, although this was a difficult prospect given events during the early years of the Jihad such as the use of nuclear weapons against the civilian population. There were those who pointed to the decision by the Azami to offer ten percent of the graduates from the first class to graduate out of the Algedi War College to the DCMS as a sign that relations were indeed thawing between the Azami and the Coordinator were improving, although critics responded by highlighting that the recruits offered to the DCMS made up the lowest-performing ten percent of the class and that the offer may have simply been an effort to cull the lower-quality recruits out while preserving the best graduates for the Arkab Legions.

Nevertheless, the diplomatic efforts finally resulted in a compromise which saw all of the Azami Brotherhood worlds other than Algedi transfer into the new Republic of the Sphere. Algedi remained within the Combine, serving as a border haven for those Azami who wished to retain their loyalties to the Combine, and as such Algedi was accorded a semi-neutral status between the Combine and the Republic. Despite the agreement the hostility felt between some parties still hadn't abated in 3081.

The dramatic increase in heavy industry on Algedi was notable as early as 3075, as was other evidence of the split between the Azami and the Combine; traditional cultural Azami practices were usually conducted out of sight within the Combine, to prevent the Azami from standing out from the general population, but those practices were being conducted openly on Algedi, and the resentment towards the Combine was open. The consistent failure of ISF attempts to penetrate the complex and determine what was being constructed in a newly built annex raised flags for the ISF that their local operations may have been penetrated in turn by the Azami.

Throughout Algedi's history the key import for the planet was water filters; the native population would adapt over time to need less water, and the Azami developed access to a number of underground reservoirs within their private "Desert Paradise" region of the planet, but the visitors to the world - including all the Combine personnel stationed there - would require large quantities of water. The Saharan continent would serve for centuries as a destination for the high-speed desert racing popular with the Azami, who raced using both powered and native vehicles for races conducted through the deep crevices that marked the continent and through the network of canyons. The races would often serve as a form of mediating disputes and other matters amongst the Azami, and others were only invited to attend one as a sign of great honor.

Algedi has two major continents, Algedi Primus and Algedi Secundus. Much of the surface of Algedi consists of rocks and sand, with common ores and some rarer elements hiding under the surface. Algedi was a barren world beneath a sun so large that it takes up a full third of the sky during the day. Because of this the planet enjoys no true night. Only the Algedian Azami was accustomed to the planet, while the rest seem to suffer from broken biological clocks. Those same Algedian Azami are terrified of the dark when they left the planet.

Algedi V - more commonly referred to simply as Algedi - is the fifth planet in the Algedi system and has a single moon. For much of its history Algedi served as the Prefecture capital of the Algedi Prefecture, and at various times the surface of Algedi was host to industrial manufacturers such as Cairo Enterprises, Sword of the Prophet Enterprises and the Scarborough Manufacturing Annex as well as a military academy, the Algedi War College.

Planetary History[edit]

Early History[edit]

Algedi was originally colonized by a small sect of Azami from North Africa, who adapted to the harsh conditions found on the planet; throughout the centuries after it was founded few outside the Azami had the time and patience to similarly adapt to life on the planet.[2] The sun allowed no true night to fall on the world, and new residents frequently have their biological clocks thrown completely out of sync. As a result the bureaucracy of the world, and every world in what would become the Algedi Prefecture, wasn't as efficient as that of other prefectures.[1] There were no higher life forms on Algedi when it was colonized, but various animals would be introduced later; some creatures that adapted particularly well to the harsh ecology of the planet included Asketen sand walkers and a hybrid form of the Terran burro.[2]

Age of War[edit]

In the spring of 2497 the Draconis Combine invaded Algedi in order to bring the Azami worlds into the Combine. The invading force began with a demand for immediate integration into the Combine, the abandonment of the Azamis' religion, and immediate adoption of the Dictum Honorium. The Azami who were meeting with the invaders refused the request, and were executed on the spot. The Combine forces went on to begin systematically burning Azami settlements to the ground, with the Azami, under equipped to wage a strong resistance, were only able to stage night raids of limited success. This continued on for six months until the invaders succumbed to a disease that was present among the local population and proved quite fatal. With all of the Draconis troops dying from the disease the invasion was over, and the world defended by something smaller than the head of a pin.[6]

In 2516 the Azami decided to join the Draconis Combine, knowing full well that another invasion would be coming from them in time if they did not. The Combine agreed to take the Azami into their fold, peacefully. In exchange for inclusion into the Combine, the Azami would be required to keep their religion a secret from outsiders and the rest of the combine, and to integrate into the Draconis Combine.[8] It was also agreed that half of the world would remain off limits to those not of Azami descent, an agreement that would hold even during the dark days of the Jihad, albeit tentatively at times.[2]

Star League[edit]

During the final years of the Star League, Algedi was the host to a Star League Defense Force garrison.[43]

Succession Wars[edit]

During the Succession Wars era the ISF maintained a large contingent on the world, but they kept a low profile. The ISF rated Algedi as a high priority because the Azami who lived on the world weren't technically subjects of the Dragon, but rather an ally.[1] The Combine operated a number of mining concerns across the wastelands, extracting materials required for manufacturing.[2] Despite a long history of dissent between the Azami population and the central government of the Combine, Algedi served as the Prefecture Capital of the Algedi Prefecture for several centuries.[44]

Third Succession War[edit]

By 3025 there had been much talk about moving the prefecture capital to a planet where the bureaucracy could function effectively, nothing happened, even though with the most modern equipment, paperwork in Algedi Prefecture was in a perpetual snarl.[45]

Jihad[edit]

On the 11th of August 3071, following a rogue asteroid strike on Arkab and a perceived lack of assistance from the government of the Draconis Combine, the Azami leadership recalled all of the remaining Arkab Legions back to Algedi, against the orders of the Coordinator.[46][47] A few months later on the 12th of November Coordinator Hohiro Kurita II issued an ultimatum to the Azami on Algedi, demanding that the Arkab Legions either "mobilize for the Dragon's defense or face the Dragon's wrath."[46][48]

The form of this promised wrath became clear in late January 3072, when the Kirishima-class WarShip Siriwan arrived bearing an ultimatum from Gunji-no-Kanrei Kiyomori Minamoto. The Siriwan bombarded two of the Azami cities before being destroyed in orbit by nuclear weapons.[48][49] The DCMS sent troops armed with tactical nuclear weapons to liberate the captives taken during the abortive assault by the Siriwan, and those troops managed to breach the defenses on Algedi on the 12th of April.[48][50]

The Sword of the Prophet Enterprises facility located near the city of Agadir on Algedi Secundus began manufacturing Primitive BattleMechs during the Jihad, producing both Dervishes and Gladiators from the plant by 3079;[51] Algedi also went on to open a military college, the Algedi War College, which completed construction in or near Algiers in time to open for the first class of students in 3075.[52] Despite the disruption caused by the Jihad the civilian manufacturer Cairo Enterprises continued to operate their facility in the Alexandrian Wastes, producing a range of civilian vehicles used across the various Azami worlds;[44] the Scarborough Manufacturing Annex in Algiers also managed to keep manufacturing output up during the critical years of the Jihad, escaping the damage inflicted on the plants located on Al Na'ir and Quentin.[53]

The Azami appeared united, but not only by their shared frustration at the Combine; the Azami had become strongly negative towards all outsiders.[54] By 3076 a number of new mining concerns had been established in the wastelands of Algedi, founded with exclusive trade agreements with the Azami alone, not with the Combine. The ISF was taking an active interest in these new concerns, as well as trying to penetrate the security around Cairo Enterprises, which was operating as a subsidiary of Buda Imperial Vehicles but only supplying the Azami. The consistent failure of ISF attempts to penetrate the complex and determine what was being constructed in a newly built annex raised flags for the ISF that their local operations may have been penetrated in turn by the Azami.[2]

Towards the end of the Jihad the Combine government was hoping to defuse the high tensions on Algedi between the Azami and the central government, although this was a difficult prospect given events during the early years of the Jihad such as the use of nuclear weapons against the civilian population.[44] There were those who pointed to the decision by the Azami to offer ten percent of the graduates from the first class to graduate out of the Algedi War College to the DCMS as a sign that relations were indeed thawing between the Azami and the Coordinator were improving, although critics responded by highlighting that the recruits offered to the DCMS made up the lowest-performing ten percent of the class and that the offer may have simply been an effort to cull the lower-quality recruits out while preserving the best graduates for the Arkab Legions.[52]

Despite the agreement the hostility felt between some parties still hadn't abated in 3081.[55]

The races would often serve as a form of mediating disputes and other matters amongst the Azami, and others were only invited to attend one as a sign of great honor.[2]

Geography[edit]

Algedi has two major continents, Algedi Primus and Algedi Secundus.[3] Much of the surface of Algedi consists of rocks and sand, with common ores (like gold[45]) and some rarer elements hiding under the surface. There was also a large region referred to sometimes as the Saharan continent. Algedi is a very arid world and the sun takes up a third of the visible sky, preventing true night from ever falling on the world.[2]

Algedi was a barren world beneath a sun so large that it takes up a full third of the sky during the day. Because of this the planet enjoys no true night. Only the Algedian Azami was accustomed to the planet, while the rest seem to suffer from broken biological clocks. Those same Algedian Azami are terrified of the dark when they left the planet.[45]

Local Flora and Fauna[edit]

Imported life-forms adapted to desert life are flourishing on the planet. Asketen Sand Walkers and Terran Burros are commonly seen grazing on tough grasses and cacti.[45]

Planetary Locations[edit]

 • Agadir: city located on Algedi Secundus[51]
 • Algedi War College: located near Algiers and operated from 3075 onwards[52]
 • Algiers: Planetary capital city, located on Algedi Prime[3]

Companies and Industries[edit]

 • Cairo Enterprises - Located in the Alexandrian wastes[2]
 • Scarborough Manufacturing Annex - located in Algiers[63]
 • Sword of the Prophet Enterprises - located near Agadir[52]
