Ral Partha Miniatures

Ral Partha would reuse catalog numbers from discontinued figures, thus catalog numbers alone do not uniquely identify a figure. It is convenient to divide Ral Partha figures into the following lines/eras.

Battledroids line (1985)

In 1985, Ral Partha marketed a line of models for Battledroids, the latter having been created in 1984. These models did not correspond to the mechs mentioned in the record sheets of the Battledroids rulebook. None of these seem to correspond to any mentioned in Technical Readout: 3025. Note: The Vulcan does appear in TRO 3025, but with a different model code and artwork suggesting that no relation is intended. The names of several of these mechs would be employed in later Technical Readouts, though usually with a different model code prefix. Thus these do not appear to directly correspond to any canonical mechs/variants.

The FIR-7B Fire Bee did not appear in the 1985 catalog but was marketed in the 1986 catalog as a model that had been introduced before. Given the figure's similarity to that of the Hornet, Falcon, and Gladiator of this line, it is incorporated here.

In 1986, Ral Partha marketed these and several new models under the Battletech line. These models would continue to be marketed for a few years, but were gradually discontinued and fully absent from marketing literature in 1989.

Battletech line (1986-1993)

In 1985, Battletech 2nd edition was published and the name converted from Battledroids to Battletech. Citytech 1st edition and Technical Readout: 3025 were both published in 1986.

In this period, Ral Partha dramatically grew it line of mechs and incorporated lance packs, aerospace fighters, and infantry. Everything introduce in this period corresponded to Inner Sphere units. While Clan tech was introduced in Citytech 1st edition, no clan units appeared to be produced by Ral Partha until 1990 or 1991. Technical Readout: 3050 was published in 1990.

Miniatures in this period contained lead. In 1993 Ral Partha announced that it would transition away from lead containing alloys and use Ralidium, it lead-free pewter. (Ral Partha also introduced Partha Plastic to be used in part or or in whole for certain larger miniatures.) After the transition to Ralidium, the same catalog numbers were typically used to represent the corresponding miniature created in pewter. (So catalog number alone would not identify the material used.)

The FLE-15 and ARC-4R did not appear in the 1985 catalog but was marketed in the 1986 catalog as a model that had been introduced before. The status of their model code in the canonical literature is unclear. So while these do appear to correspond to mechs that are canonical, they might not represent canonical variants. The ARC-4R was last marketed as such in 1990 and the same catalog code was used for the BMB-12D Bombardier in subsequent years. However, photographs of both suggest that this was simply a renaming and not a new sculpt.

The table below represents individual units sold by Ral Partha. Ral Partha also produced some box sets which are described in the Boxed Sets section.

Year represents the first year the miniature appeared in one of the Ral Partha Catalogs or the first year of sale implied by a catalog entry. If a second year is given, it gives the last year the miniature appeared in a Ral Partha catalog of the last year of sale implied by a catslog entry. [Catalogs were generally published once a year. So precise periods of sale could vary slighty (i.e., a year) from those stated below.]

Introduction of Ralidum (1993 and after)

Ral Partha catalogs in 1992 and earlier included a warning statement that their miniatures contained lead and proper precautions be taken. In Ral Partha's 1993 catalog the company announced the introduction of Ralidum(TM), its formulation of lead-free pewter. Also Partha Plastics are mentioned as a component in certain larger models, where a mix of Ralidium and Partha Plastic was employed. It appears that catalog numbers generally maintained their continuity with corresponding sculpt even when the base material changed. Boxed Sets

Ral Partha used the range of catalog codes from 10-800 to 10-899 for Battletech box sets. The composition of some of the lance packs did vary depending of the year of manufacture.

Ral Partha transitioned from using lead alloy to Ralidium, its formulation of lead free-pewter, sometime in 1993. Miniatures marketed in the 1993 catalog were still described as containing lead. Ral Partha also introduced Partha Plastic, a type of resin. Some box sets (but no individually packaged miniatures) employed a combination of Partha Plastic and Ralidium. These boxed sets contain a P in their catalog code. It is unclear what relation these mixed material boxed sets had to the corresponding individual miniatures.

Battletech Mechwarriors

From 1988 to 1993, Ral Partha marketed a line of Battletech Mechwarriors as a separate section adjacent to its Battletech line and appear to relate to MechWarrior: The BattleTech Role Playing Game, which was published in 1986. The miniatures involve infantry and human units, but with a scale appearing to be independent from infantry for regular Battletech. One of these unites, the Clan elemental, would continue being marketed as individual piece even when the rest of line stopped in 1993.
