System Description[edit]
Caledonia is located near the Hesperus II and Lamon systems.[2][3]
System History[edit]
The Caledonia system was settled during or shortly after the First Exodus from Terra and was a part of the Federation of Skye when the Lyran Commonwealth formed in the mid-twenty-fourth century.[4]

Caledonia is a temperate, Earth-like world with two moons: the "huge and silvery" Stirling and the "small and golden" Bannochburn.[33] The world is also often referred to as "Caledon"[1] which may be an expression for the planet as opposed to the system as a whole.
Planetary History[edit]
Caledon suffered heavy damage when the Draconis Combine conquered the planet in a seven-years campaign from 2841 through 2849 (destroying the defending Fourth Royal Guards in the process) and effectively scorched the planet. The world was slow to recover, and was subsequently ruled from offworld for over a century, first from Hesperus II and then from Tharkad.[37]
The settlers on Caledon cultivated their Scottish roots, including a heavy Scots burr, for centuries. Davis McCall was the estranged scion of a powerful family on Caledonia.
By the mid-thirty-first century, the capital city of New Edinburgh, which also featured a spaceport, was noted to have some 80-90,000 inhabitants.[38]
3056 Uprising[edit]
Around 3056, the Federated Commonwealth's governor on Caledon, Nelson Wilmarth, became a catalyst for an uprising. An outsider not native to Caledonia and unpopular to begin with, he was opposed by the planet's strong Jacobites movement and a sect called the Word of Jihad, a splinter sect of the Unfinished Book movement. Wilmarth gradually replaced the planetary militia with foreigners who were loyal only to him and by 3056 took to extreme measures including deploying BattleMechs against civilian protesters, torturing prisoners to death, and literally putting bodies and severed heads on display on stakes. Things came to a head when Davis McCall and Alexander Carlyle of the Gray Death Legion visited Caledonia and confronted Wilmarth at his citadel over imprisoning McCall's brother. The situation deteriorated to the point where McCall and Carlyle had to fight their way out (freeing some prisoners in the process) on 1 April 3056. On the same night they attacked the citadel with help from local resistance groups to free many prisoners. The Gray Death Legion proper was called in from Glengarry to restore order.
In truth, Wilmarth was manipulated by his military advisor Kellen Folker, who was part of a group of conspirators centered on Field Marshal Brandal Gareth. The entire situation was engineered to put the Gray Death Legion into a no-win situation by pitting them against those rising against Wilmarth's cruel and unlawful rule. Major Folker tried to suborn the unit when they arrived on Caledonia and ordered Grayson Carlyle to send his 'Mechs against the people. When Carlyle refused, Folker had him arrested but Carlyle was freed by his security detail and the Gray Death Legion subsequently restored order by vanquishing Wilmarth's forces and elements of Gareth's Third Davion Guards in the field in a final battle on 16 April. Both Wilmarth and Folker escaped.
The Jihad[edit]
On 30 September 3073, the infamous Word of Blake unit the Fifty-second Shadow Division struck at Caledonia, destroying the defending Twenty-second Skye Rangers.[39][40]

Geography[edit]
Caledonia's local time is measured using the standard terran twenty-four hour clock, with an extra fifty-three minutes added after midnight.[46] Although this is not stated, the impression given for the planet is that of an Earth-like, open-environment world with a breathable atmosphere and plentiful arable soil.[34] CherryPicker AgroMechs are operated on Caledonia.[47]
Planetary Locations[edit]
- Falkirk: town at the southern edge of the Grampian Mountains
- Grampian Mountains
- Mount Alba
- New Edinburgh: the planetary capital city.[33]
- Stirling: a city 1,000km north of New Edinburgh.[43]
- Tanglewood
Companies and Industries[edit]
- There is an AgroMech factory in New Edinburgh, possibly manufacturing the CherryPicker[48]
