Planetary History
Early History
Proserpina was one of the Core Worlds housing heavy industry companies such as Guided Technologies and Bulldog Enterprises. These factories, and many others, exploited the petrochemical and mineral resources of the planet directly and refined metals from the ores in the world were shipped to many other planets
Star League
During the final years of the Star League, Proserpina was the host to a Star League Defense Force garrison.[44]
Succession Wars
After the fall of the Star League the world faced nearly constant raids by the Federated Suns. During one of these raids the defending DCMS forces used a nerve gas to destroy the invaders. As a result the planet's surface is mostly poisonous after combat during the Succession Wars; In fact two of it's five continents (Amerigo and Greater Harpago)[45] are totally uninhabitable
By 3025 the planet had been seven times the object of ferocious contests between the Draconis Combine and the Federated Suns. During the last battle between Davion and Kurita, the Combine forces released huge plumes of nerve gas that killed approximately 60% of the planet's civilian and military populations.[46]
Civil War
In 3066, despite the years that have passed since the wars both the air and water on planet surface are still contaminated. Yet the rich minerals of the planet and well developed industry bring prosperity to it's inhabitants, even if they do need to wear environmental suits and breathing masks.[47]
The location of Proserpina on the Federated Suns border insures that the DCMS has kept a strong defensive force in place on the world, as well as establishing an extensive network of refit and rearm points for defending troops. In addition to the military forces on world, the planet also hosts the University of Proserpina, a military academy that has consistently turned out high-quality graduates for the DCMS.[45]
The database of the (apocryphal) 1989 video game MechWarrior, set around the year 3025, gives a population of 1.872 billion for Proserpina and describes the environment as "desert" (out of only three impressions of planetary environments given in the game, these being "desert", "ice", or "tropical").
Dark Age
The Ryuken-san were stationed on Proserpina in 3087 when the Robinson Rangers launched a raid against the planet, looking to hit the Bulldog Technologies factory. The raiding force fell afoul of a defending Ryuken-san force that included a pair of the new Pegasus (X-Pulse) hovertanks. The two hovertanks were able to savage the raiding force, forcing them to abort the raid, but a Rangers Locust managed to hit one of the lift fans on one of the two hovertanks with a lucky shot; the damaged Pegasus made contact with the ground briefly before tearing itself apart in the resulting cartwheel through the air, destroying the vehicle and killing the crew.[48]
Local Fauna
The infamous Blood Limpet is native to Proserpina.[49]
Planetary Data[47]
- Continents: Amerigo, Bragadin, Darwan, Greater Harpago, Lesser Harpago
In 3025 two of the continents were complete wastelands, and the northern Amerigo continent was unapproachable except in an environmental suit because of the many long-lasting contact poisons in the soil and water.[46]
