The Buena system was home to at least one habitable world, Buena II, and as of 3151 was the headquarters of the Buena Theater within the Lyran Commonwealth.[3]

System Description[edit]

The Buena system is located near the Ayacucho and Valloire systems[4][5] and consists of a class G6V primary orbited by at least two planets. During the thirty-first century a recharge station was in place at the nadir jump point.[1][2]

Buena II - more commonly known simply as Buena - is the second planet in the Buena system. Buena has three moons named Bonita, Hermosa and Inestia[1][2] and the Leugo continent is home to a branch of the noted defense manufacturer Arcturan Arms.[2]

Planetary History[edit]

Early History[edit]

Buena was colonized by settlers of Italian or Spanish descent, who benefited from a planetary climate reminiscent of that of the Mediterranean region on Terra.[1]

The Reunification War[edit]

As the Star League Defense Force completed the first wave of attacks in Operation Mailed Fist - the name given to the Star League intervention into the civil war that had been raging across the Rim Worlds Republic since 2575 - reprisal attacks from Republican forces against worlds within the Lyran Commonwealth were anticipated.[43]

As predicted, reprisal raids began hitting Lyran worlds in late October 2581, five months after Star League operations began, and Buena was the target of at least one of these raids. The raid on Buena was one of several small hit-and-run raids launched in company strength by units from the Rim Worlds Army and achieved little when the raiders encountered substantial Lyran Commonwealth Armed Forces defenses already in place.[43]

Third Succession War[edit]

In 3020 the Lyran Commonwealth Armed Forces opened the War College of Buena, a military academy that specialized in training MechWarriors and teaching Maintenance Sciences.[44]

The Jihad[edit]

With the destruction of Alarion by the Word of Blake Buena was widely touted as the logical successor to assume the position of capital world of the Alarion Province[2] although there was some speculation that the position might go instead to Kaumburg, capital world of the Kaumburg Archonette. Less cooperative with Tharkad than Kaumburg,[45] Buena continued to push the limits of the authority available as the capital of an Archonette as the 3070s drew to a close.[2]

On the 14th of February 3081 following the formal dissolution of the Buena Archonette the authority the Archonette had over local Lyran Alliance Armed Forces returned to the central Lyran government. Buena was subsequently established as the new capital of the renamed Buena Province of the Lyran Alliance.[46]

Dark Age[edit]

Following the loss of several Buena Province worlds to the resurrected Free Worlds League in 3146, General Diego Widmer, Margrave of the Timbuktu Theater, lambasted Archon Trillian Steiner in a public speech given on 7 July. Citing her inability to protect Buena Province, Widmer announced that Buena was seceding from the Lyran Commonwealth with himself as head of a new state. As "Warlord" of the nascent Buena Collective, Widmer then set about securing additional worlds. By the end of the year, Buena had become capital of a small nation spanning ten systems in total.[47]

LCAF counterattacks against the Collective's key worlds began in mid-3147, and on 24 January 3148 Buena itself came under assault. After barely a week of fighting Lyran forces had subdued the rebellious world and captured Widmer. Buena and the remaining Collective worlds were then reintegrated into the Commonwealth. [48] [49]

ilClan[edit]

When Ludwig Steiner was promoted to Margrave of Florida Theater in 3151, one of his first acts was to redraw the theater's borders to encompass the entire border with the Free Worlds League. As a result, Buena was now within the borders of Florida Theater. A short while later, Margrave Steiner moved his headquarters from Florida to Buena, resulting in the formation of the Buena Theater.[3]
