Flashpoint, by Loren L. Coleman, is a novel of the massive Federated Commonwealth Civil War viewed from a single planet swept up in the conflict.

The novel was made available on BattleCorps on 06 March 2011 as a PDF file (text only, without cover, pictures, or any other interior artwork except for the usual BattleCorps frame graphics). The PDF copy includes a disclaimer stating that it was created from a pre-final edition text that might differ from the printed version and that canon-wise, the print edition trumps the PDF edition.

From the back cover[edit]

David McCarthy returns to Kathil a hero—one of the few surviving members of the First Kathil Uhlans, who fought so fiercely in the war to defeat the Clans. But David returns from Clan space with haunting memories of the cost of victory...

With the Federated Commonwealth on the brink of civil war, David joins the planetary militia on Kathil—and steps into a powder keg. Opposing forces wrangle for control of the planet and its orbital shipyards, which berth a portion of the FedCom's mighty WarShip fleet. The Eighth Regimental Combat Team—loyal to Archon Katrina—refuses to turn over control of the planet to the militia. Caught in the power struggle between supporters of Katrina and those of her brother, Victor, McCarthy vows that he won't fail the people of his homeworld, even if that means leading his untested MechWarriors against the Eighth's superior firepower—and dredging up a past he'd rather forget...

Summary[edit]

This novel picks up the tale of David McCarthy as he returns from serving with the Kathil Uhlans on Task for Serpent. He takes over a Militia Company of Kathil just as tensions between Steiner and Davion Loyalists are reaching a peak.

In the background the primary planetary garrison is the 8th Fedcom RCT. This unit is fanatically pro Steiner, and has refused orders from the march, Lord Duke Hasek, to depart the important shipbuilding planet of Kathil.

There are 5 major storylines. One revolve around the story of Davids final battle on Huntress. Another is the Story of Davids command of his militia company and thier battles with the 8th Fedcom. Then there are three intertwined viewpoints. The story of Amanda Blacks recurring battles with 8th RCTs Lieutenant Barajas, which is told from both perspectives, and the perspective of Kommandant Evan who is the major protagonist. The final plot line is that of the warship in construction in orbit, the Robert Davion.

The story also has two sub plots following the relationship between David and Amanda, as well as the one between Evan and his commander.

The main story unfolds with the militia attempting to arrest the executives of the RCT. This was intercepted by Barajas, who kicks of the first battle between the two sides. This is seen from the view of David who is sent to hold the town that the Dukes family lives in. There is a company sized battle there, with the militia eventually ceding the ground as the RCT begins to reinforce the area.

The next major engagement comes as David leads a raid on the city to free the noble hostages, while simultaneously the RCT raids a power plant that had in the 4th succession war, been used to shoot down Capellan dropships, with the intention of preventing reinforcements to the militia.

The final battle comes as the power plant is recaptured, not in time to prevent it from being used against some dropships, but to prevent the complete destruction of the reinforcements.
