Kestrel is a heavily populated world in the coreward Crucis March of the Federated Suns. Furthermore it is the capital of the Kestrel Combat Region in the Markesan Operation Area.

Planetary History[edit]

After the founding of the Federated Suns in 2317 the world of Kestrel was one of the first new members of the young state. The system's location deep in the Suns' territory let the world prosper and made the satisfied population and the ducal family staunch supporters of the Davions. That is one of the reasons why the people of Kestrel have consistently been among the top five worlds providing the most number of recruits to the AFFS.[1]

First Succession War[edit]

In 2789, the Draconis Combine began a hugely successful invasion of the Federated Suns, with Draconis Combine Mustered Soldiery units pouring across the border and conquering system after system while the Armed Forces of the Federated Suns desperately tried to mount a defense amidst mass confusion and conflicting orders exacerbated by the DCMS specifically targeting communications systems and JumpShips as priorities for destruction to disrupt communications. The first attempt to break the invasion was mustered by First Prince John Davion in 2788 and that attempt, Operation SOLAR SHIELD, was an expensive disaster. By the time Prince John's second plan had begun at the end of 2789, the Dragon had advanced as far as conquering such far-flung Federated Suns worlds as Acoma, Batavia, Imbrial III, Kestrel, and Saunemin.[39][10]

Prince John's second plan—a massive naval response under the operational command of Admiral Kenneth Jones—saw AFFS forces return to Kestrel in early 2790, striking at the Draconis Combine Admiralty ships in the system, and although the battle group only stayed in the system for a week before moving on to the next target it was able to provide valuable assistance to the resistance groups still fighting on Kestrel.[10]

Kestrel was liberated by the AFFS in 28092810 as part of the second major AFFS counteroffensive of the First Succession War against the Draconis Combine.[13]

Second Succession War[edit]

During the Second Succession War Kestrel was one of many planets devastated by the Draconis Combine's search and destroy missions.[40]

Military Deployment[edit]

Geography[edit]

Kestrel is a beautiful world with fertile plains and plentiful natural resources. The world's colonization and industrial expansion were planned wisely. Most of the heavy industry were shifted to Kestrel's two moons, which were terraformed into habitable worlds of their own. Most of the population lives in big cities, which contain a lot of skyscrapers, leaving enough space for vast fields, plains and forests. All this turns Kestrel into one of the Garden Worlds of the Federated Suns, whose food exports feed many worlds throughout the Crucis and Draconis Marches.[1]

Notes[edit]

  • Kestrel is the home planet of most members of the famous McKinnon's Raiders since 2786 when First Prince John Davion bestowed Captain Kieran McKinnon and his company with titles and lands on this world in return for their service.[52]
  • In many of Michael A. Stackpole's novels, Kestrel is said to be the landhold of the Allard family (who are invested as the Counts of Kestrel). In contrast, many of the sourcebooks claim Kestrel to be the Cunningham family's ducal landhold. (House Davion (The Federated Suns) actually states both simultaneously, albeit on different pages.) The discrepancy has never been reconciled; one explanation might be the Allard family being a cadet branch of or distantly related to the Cunninghams.[citation needed]
