Planetary History[edit]
While the highest form of native life on Layover is microbial, it is also completely pervasive, to the extent that a large part of the air breathed by everyone on the planet is saturated with those same microbes. Those from families with a multigenerational exposure to the air on the planet have developed a resistance, but anyone else must wear a breather mask if they intend to be outside for an extended period.[1]
Star League Era[edit]
At the height of the Star League, Layover was the location of a significant percentage of the Federated Suns heavy naval manufacturing industry; by 2765, with the massive manufacturing facilities at Galax yet to come online, Layover and the worlds of Delavan, Kathil, and Panpour were responsible for ninety percent of all large naval craft manufactured inside the Federated Suns.[50]
First Succession War[edit]
Layover was invaded during the first half of the major invasion into the Federated Suns launched by the Draconis Combine in May 2787.[13] Layover was liberated by the Armed Forces of the Federated Suns in 2809–2810 as part of the second major AFFS counteroffensive of the First Succession War against the Draconis Combine.[15]
Post-Jihad[edit]
Following the catastrophic damage inflicted on Kallon Weapon Industries during the Jihad, the Federated Suns government forced Salvatore Incorporated to sell Kallon some of the unused facilities on Layover. This step was taken to ensure that Kallon would at least survive as an operating company, even if it would be decades before the company could begin to thrive again.[51] As it was, the Quikscell Company facilities and the working Salvatore plants had both taken damage during the Jihad—Quikscell took more than fifty percent damage alone, whilst Salvatore's losses amounted to roughly a fifth of its operating capability—and it would be some time before all three companies could bring their facilities up to full production.[52]
With Salvatore and Kallon now sharing the same site at St. Edwards on the Arizona continent both saw an increase in activity since the enforced nationalization and sale of a part of Salvatore's facilities. Salvatore have benefited from new contracts and generous loans to continue production of their Seeker-class DropShips and K-1-class DropShuttles; Kallon quickly began producing the Arondight-class Pocket WarShip under royal license, and by 3079 had expanded their facilities to also begin manufacturing the first Vengeance-class fighter-carriers to be produced in the Federated Suns in decades.[53][54] Kallon also diversified beyond manufacturing DropShips at their Layover facilities, adding the refit of older DropShips as a side business; this proved a profitable enough venture that Kallon soon added it to their portfolio as a full-fledged product division.[55]
