The Donegal system was home to at least one habitable world, Donegal IV, and as of 3151 was the administrative capital of the Donegal Province of the Lyran Commonwealth.[4] Prior to the formation of the Lyran Commonwealth Donegal was the capital of the Protectorate of Donegal.[5]

System Description[edit]

Donegal is located near the Cameron and Gibbs systems[6][7] and consists of a class F0V primary orbited by at least four planets. During the thirty-first century, recharge stations were in place at both the nadir and zenith jump points.[1]

System History[edit]

The Donegal system was settled during the First Exodus from Terra.[8]

Donegal IV, more commonly known simply as Donegal, is the fourth planet in the system and has a single moon named Seth's Jewel. A major industrial and commercial world, Donegal is home to numerous major and minor industrial and business concerns. And has been a national or regional capital world since at least as early as the early twenty-fourth century.[1] Orbiting above Donegal during the thirty-first century were two space settlements known as "The Tin Cans," which were as well developed as the planet below.[1]

Planetary History[edit]

Exodus[edit]

In 2301, Seth Marsden arrived on Donegal, having recently departed the world of Skye. Marsden had been the most trusted advisor to Ian McQuiston, the owner of the vast Skye Traders conglomerate and ruler of the Federation of Skye; whatever the reasons for their quarrel—some believed that Marsden had deliberately initiated the argument, to give himself a pretext to leave—Marsden planned on establishing his own realm in a fashion similar to that of his former employer. Beginning with the Donegal Freights and Goods company, Marsden took Donegal, a generally pleasant world with abundant resources and an amiable climate, and followed in McQuiston's footsteps;[8] by 2314[5] Marsden had brought Donegal enough influence in the region that it became the capital of a new state, the Protectorate of Donegal.[8]

Third Succession War[edit]

The Commonwealth Church Council was founded in 2908 by leaders from thirty of the most significant Christian denominations within the Lyran Commonwealth, the so called Council of 30 focused on dialogue between various Christian confessions, as well as with the Lyran government.[49][50]

The Commonwealth Free Trade Society was founded in 3013 by Lyran merchants and corporate leaders with interests in the Commonwealth's border regions, in order to campaign for looser trade restrictions and lower trade taxes with foreign realms. Its methods to advance these aims included funding candidates to political office who were sympathetic to their cause.[51][52]

The Jihad[edit]

The Word of Blake launched a raid on Donegal between 14 and 17 March 3068, while also launching raids on Coventry and Hesperus II; the three raids all featured support from Blakist WarShips or Pocket WarShips.[53] The WoB deployed the Blake's Redemption, a Vincent-class corvette that with precise marksmanship with its capital ship weapons and a few nuclear devices was able to reduce to rubble in less than two days Nashan Diversified's and Lockheed/CBM's complexes, and all key infrastructure and landmarks of the planet's major cities despite a fervent resistance by the First Donegal Jaegers aerospace wing. After that the ship went silent though still in orbit.[2][54] The Word of Blake then took advantage of the reduced defenses on Donegal to launch a full assault on 27 February 3070, attempting to occupy the world in a fashion similar to that already used against Hesperus II.[39][40]

In 3070, a small Lyran Alliance relief force attempted to break the Blakist blockade of Donegal; led by the Ian McQuiston, the relief force was forced to withdraw by the WoBS Blake's Redemption.[55][54]

In February 3070, the Word dropped the Second Division on Donegal. Having already hidden several Level IIs, the First Donegal Jaegers lasted for one week after surrendering, with the Ian McQuiston trying to escort a relief force to the planet but suffering heavy damage in the failed attempt.[54]

The Blakists quickly converted any industrial capacity left to further the Blakist war effort. Over the last half of 3070, the Word transferred in the Eighteenth Division under Precentor Ernst Regan. The Command had issues as the planet was still full of rebels.

In early 3072, the Fiftieth Shadow Division was dispatched to Donegal mere weeks before Victor Steiner-Davion's rescue operation arrived.[54]

After more than one year of blockade, on 14 February 3072 a coalition of forces from ComStar, Clan Wolf-in-Exile, and the Lyran Alliance Armed Forces all under the command of Precentor Martial Victor Steiner-Davion successfully broke the blockade and liberated Donegal.[41][42]

In December 3076, it was speculated by the media that Donegal was the site of planning or troop movements in support of an anticipated invasion of the Word of Blake Protectorate due to a combination of factors, which included the arrival of the Monarch-class DropShip Little Big Horn, believed to be the command vessel of General Belle Lee of the allied coalition. The Little Big Horn arrived with almost no notice at a cargo port near Wytheville operated by General Dynamics on the 2nd of December; the Wytheville port which was then promptly placed under a security lockdown for all traffic other than allied coalition forces. All civilian traffic was routed to the Meridian drop facility, roughly 1,000 km away, while at least three secure convoys landed at Wytheville in the next 24 hours.[56]

Adding credence to the media speculation was the arrival of the security detachment associated with Duke Robert Kelswa-Steiner; it was rumored that the other two private convoys to land at Wytheville were bringing Field Marshal Katheryn Sandoval-Ito and Tai-shu Isoroku Kurita and their attached entourages to Wytheville from Bladensburg, where both parties had been staying in seclusion for several weeks. While this wasn't confirmed, the planetary Civilian Space Transit department did confirm that at the time, there were more than seventy assorted vessels present at the local zenith jump point, with several other DropShips inbound.[56]

Dark Age[edit]

Donegal was attacked in February 3143 by Clan Wolf during the Wolves' offensive towards Tharkad. The defending Seventeenth Donegal Guards weakened the invaders with hit-and-run strikes until they withdrew three weeks later.[57]

After Clan Jade Falcon's conquest of Arc-Royal in 3146 the surviving members of Clan Wolf-in-Exile moved to Donegal.[58]

By October 3150, Malvina Hazen had assembled several Jade Falcon Clusters in nearby systems, intending for Donegal to be her next conquest, and the LCAF reinforced the planet's garrison. The anticipated invasion never occurred, as news that Alaric Ward and Clan Wolf were closing on Terra prompted Hazen to abandon the invasion plan and divert Clan Jade Falcon's efforts towards humanity's homeworld instead.[59]

The database of the (apocryphal) 1989 video game MechWarrior, set around the year 3025, gives a population of 3.651 million for Donegal and describes the environment as "tropical" (out of only three broad impressions of planetary environments given in the game, these being "desert," "ice," and "tropical"). The description one-liner reads: "Rich in diamonds, rare metals, and traders."
