Planetary History[edit]

Halstead Station is a world settled exclusively for its vast mineral resources. Unfortunately the planet's surface is completely unsuited to human life, featuring a toxic nitrogen-heavy cyanide-argon atmosphere. To overcome this the Ozawa Mercantile Association established a vast series of underground cities, factories, and domed cities that covered approximately 3% of the planet's surface.[1] After the world joined with the Draconis Combine, it found new use as a military staging area, military prison, and punishment duty station.[1]

During the Star League era, Halstead Station served as the homeport for the Fourth Fleet of the Star League Navy. To prevent friction with the local population, the naval component kept a low profile on world.[46]

Battle of Halstead Station[edit]

Though these features made Halstead Station interesting it is best known for the raid First Prince Hanse Davion executed on the world in 3014. Halstead Station first came to the attention of Prince Ian in 3012 when news of Coordinator Takashi's choice to build a supply depot was discovered. By building a supply depot so close to Davion lines, the DCMS would be able to deliver parts to their front line troops much more quickly. Prince Ian saw this as much of a threat as Coordinator Takashi saw it as a boon and quickly drew up plans to attack the planet. The death of Prince Ian caused the attack to be delayed, and Prince Hanse was advised to cancel the attack altogether. He knew, however, that there was a recently discovered university from the Star League Era on the planet. This changed the objective of this raid from destroying the Kurita supply depots to one to obtain documents, books, and memory storage devices from the recently discovered university.[47]

On 4 January 3014, Hanse Davion landed on the planet with three 'Mech regiments. Although House Kurita had reinforced the planet after discovering the university, it still was not enough to keep the Davion forces from reaching the site. The Davion 'Mechs punched their way into a sealed vault, and were pleased to discover a treasure trove of ancient books. With their forces under fire, they could only loot the books quickly, scooping them up in their 'Mechs hands, and dumping them in large sacks, then burning everything they couldn't loot. These books were later used to form the core library for the New Avalon Institute of Science.[47][48]

War of 3039[edit]

Early in the War of 3039 Halstead Station was taken by the green Fifth FedCom RCT supported by a unit of the Fighting Urukhai. After the Fifth took the world they began constructing elaborate bunker systems and ammunition dumps on the icy world.[49] In August 3039, the DCMS responded by sending the First Sword of Light and Seventh Sword of Light regiments to the system. There the First pinned the Fifth in place, while the Seventh landed behind them. The experienced Kuritan forces began to grind the green Fifth FedCom between them. A battalion of MechWarrior under the command of Major Donald Trent chose to desert, seized four Union-class DropShips and an Invader-class JumpShip, and subsequently established themselves as a mercenary unit named the Outlaws in service to the Free Rasalhague Republic.[50] The remainder of the Fifth was able to break contact with the elite Sword of Light regiments when the Urukhai regiment slammed into the Sword's flank.[51]
