Planetary Description

Towne is a slightly cooler Terra-like world, which is geologically young and active. The planet boasts good mineral and lumber wealth. Planet is slightly smaller, but denser than Terra, but is active volcanos and other geological activites continue give impression the world is bigger.[2]

The planet has five landmasses (continents), which have been named (including its moon) for various aspects of ancient science fiction author, Robert E Howard and his fiction-fantasy book series, Conan the Barbarian.[3] Its continents are names: Hyborian, Krom, Fetryl, Howell, and Gherst.[4]

Notable Locations

  • Port Howard - located in Circle Bay on the western coast of Hyborian mainland, its was first city estisblished on planet. The city is home of the planetary capital and Towne's major spaceport, Prince John Spaceport.[5]
  • Kale Bay - Second largest city on planet, this settlement is locate on continent of Gherst in the southern lattiudes region of Towne.[6]

History

Discovery and Settlement

The planet was discovered scientific community on Terra prior to the invention of the Kearny-Fuchida Drive. The community used digitally lined orbital telescopes which it made possible to spot Terra sized worlds, including Towne.

Towne's actual colonization efforts started from a private concern. C. Augustus Pons, a plankton magnate from Terra backed and paid for Towne's late 22nd Century settlement effort. The eccentric trillionaire was a fan of author Robert E Howard and his adventure character, Conan. He had planet's moon name for the adventurer, largest continent for lands he had traveled. Pons had the planet's main city after the author, Port Howard.

First wave of early settlers had come from the North American continent. These colonists continued to name various parts of the planet, after aspects of Howard's fantasy world. While later ones didn't.[7]

Early Eras

The planet while under administration of the Terran Alliance, had a proprietary colony, with shareholders in charge of the planet. Its shareholders prevented the rapid industrialization that accrued during preparation being made for the what became known as the Outer Reaches Rebellion from Terra. This effort along with shareholder's desires prevent over industrialization, also preserved the planet's unusual landmark names as well. The planet's mineral wealth was also located beneath its oceans, making it less desirable for corporate mining, preventing it from being target of raids.[8]

In 2317 Towne was last target of one of Admiral & Director-General James McKenna's campaigns bring worlds under aegis of newly formed nation, the Terran Hegemony.[9]

The Towne Debacle

In 2783, First Prince John Davion of the Federated Suns, dispatched forces to claim the planet. At the time, with Hegemony's Collapse, the planet was viewed as one few worlds seen as worth effort to secure by eye of the Federated Suns. Planet had number of valuable supplies in Warehouses and Hegemony industries, as well path for Suns to claim Terra. The Prince garrisoned the world elements of the 56th Avalon Hussars and 123rd Aero Interceptor Wing.

Draconis Combine & Capellan Confederation sent raiding forces against Towne in Febuary of 2785 at the same time. These raiding forces successfully raided the planet of its valuables because the two garrisoning forces had been feuding on which force to tackle first. Damaged done, caused the garrisoning force request for reinforcements. Later in December, Draconis Combine had figured out the weakness of Towne's garrison force, dispatched the 5th Dieron Regulars ahead of large invasion force to claim the planet. By time Davion forces had arrived to reinforce the beleaguered garrison, the world was claimed by the Combine as it own.[10][11]

Return to Davion Control

In 2876 Towne was part of Prince Carl Davion military campaign to retake worlds taken the Draconis Combine. Though he died in effort on David, his campaign reclaimed Towne in progress.[12]

Towne was given a legal document which known as the Towne Charter which grants the planet's citizens to organized armed militia groups. A gift from late Prince John Davion, for their guerilla war against occupation by Draconis Combine and Liao toops.[13]

Black Dragon Invasion

In middle of 3057, the Federated Commonwealth was sundered by Free Worlds League/Capellan Confederation's invasion of Sarna March. With succession of Lyran side of the Commonwealth, Towne's garrison forces were stripped to barebones.

In January of 3058, the 15th Dieron Regulars led a 6 regiment invasion force to take possession of the planet. Frontline units, considered renegades by the DCMS, were supported by Black Dragon raised regiments staffed with Yakuza thugs. The invasion, which Towne Planetary Chairman, Howard Blaylock, arranged, quickly took control of capital city of Port Howard. On planet, was the mercenary unit, the 17th Recon Regiment, whom was hired by Chandrasekhar Kurita to reinforce planet's weaken militia forces.

Forced into hiding rural regions, the mercenaries managed to build up local resistance forces with planet's Popular Militia. They managed conduct a low-level guerrilla war, which withers down occupying Black Dragon forces. By April after Planetary Chairman's execution of regiment's officers and threats against their children the Regiment launches what became known as Battle for Port Howard. As 'Mechs of the 17th Recon fought Black Dragon 'Mechs, commando team lead by Lt. JG Cassie Suthorn, whom penetrates Admin Building of city and frees the dependants. The battle ends, when Suthurn manages capture invasion's commander and has him commit ritual suicide to end conflict.[14]

The Jihad

During the Jihad the Word of Blake added Towne to the Word of Blake Protectorate. As a part of Operation SCOUR, the allied coalition invasion of the Protectorate, Towne was raided for reconnaissance information by allied scouts on the 12th of February 3077. The scouts confirmed that not only were there more than two regiments of Protectorate Militia forces on Towne, but there was also a limited but functioning SDS network protecting the world, and that the Blakists were using a large DropShip facility on the planet to convert civilian vessels into Pocket WarShips.[15]
