− | Wing was originally settled not for the world itself, but because its four moons have extensive amounts of titanium, bauxite, and germanium. Other heavy metals are also found in these moons, so establishing mining facilities there just made good economic sense. Wing itself was settled by colonists who settled in the mountain ranges. The mountains and plateaus offered better sight lines to the moons so communicating was easier, and allowed the colonists to avoid the high pressure and high temperatures found at sea level.<ref name= | + | Wing was originally settled not for the world itself, but because its four moons have extensive amounts of titanium, bauxite, and germanium. When the first Star League was established, Wing became a joint holding between the League and the Terran Hegemony. After the Star League fell, Wing reverted to the Free Worlds League, but was briefly captured by the Lyran Commonwealth. During the Succession Wars, the LCAF and FWLM fought many times on Wing, destroying most of the Star League era mining facilities and depressing the local economy.<ref name= | + | Once the mining industry was firmly established, Wing became a part of the Free Worlds League. Wing was the location of the second military action undertaken for the Lyran Commonwealth by the mercenary unit Snord's Irregulars. The Irregulars launched an attack on Wing, where Cranston Snord hoped to find the famous rare book collection of Devron. Over the course of the fierce fighting, two of the Irregulars' MechWarriors intercepted a message indicating that FWLM forces were moving a library overland to a DropShip landing zone. Assuming this to be the collection he came for, Snord and his unit disobeyed his battle orders and penetrated deep into the enemy rear area. They intercepted the transporters just outside the city of Merth and captured most of the crates holding the rare books. | Wing was the location of the second military action undertaken for the Lyran Commonwealth by the mercenary unit Snord's Irregulars. Snord's action achieved two unforeseen results: the LCAF command assumed his unit had been lost when they failed to report in, whilst the League forces mistook the raid for an attempt to attack their command center and diverted half of their front-line forces to hunt for the Irregulars. The diversion allowed the Lyran forces to break through, and they arrived just in time to save the Irregulars, who had been cornered in a small river valley. Having narrowly escaped destruction through sheer luck, the unit was decorated for heroism for a second time. With their 'Mechs badly damaged and several MechWarriors wounded, Snord's Irregulars received permission to return to Clinton. They brought the book collection with them, but then had to sell some of their art collection to pay for the extensive damage the unit had suffered. | Snord's action achieved two unforeseen results: the LCAF command assumed his unit had been lost when they failed to report in, whilst the League forces mistook the raid for an attempt to attack their command center and diverted half of their front-line forces to hunt for the Irregulars. The Kell Hounds also establishes that the Thirtieth Marik Militia was handed a humiliating defeat on Wing by Snord's Irregulars. | ||

System Description[edit]
The Wing system is located close to the Chertan and Dubhe systems[3][4] and consists of four planets orbiting a class K8V primary.[1]
System History[edit]
The Wing system was settled during the First Exodus from Terra[5] and became prior or after the Age of War a member of the Free Worlds League.[6]

Wing I - more commonly referred to simply as Wing - was the first planet of four in the Wing system and had four moons named Colley, Macon, Sakuruta, and Terell.[1]
Planetary History[edit]
Early History[edit]
Wing was originally settled not for the world itself, but because its four moons have extensive amounts of titanium, bauxite, and germanium. Other heavy metals are also found in these moons, so establishing mining facilities there just made good economic sense. Wing itself was settled by colonists who settled in the mountain ranges. The mountains and plateaus offered better sight lines to the moons so communicating was easier, and allowed the colonists to avoid the high pressure and high temperatures found at sea level.[1]
Once the mining industry was firmly established, Wing became a part of the Free Worlds League. When the first Star League was established, Wing became a joint holding between the League and the Terran Hegemony. After the Star League fell, Wing reverted to the Free Worlds League, but was briefly captured by the Lyran Commonwealth. During the Succession Wars, the LCAF and FWLM fought many times on Wing, destroying most of the Star League era mining facilities and depressing the local economy.[1]
Succession Wars[edit]
Wing was the location of the second military action undertaken for the Lyran Commonwealth by the mercenary unit Snord's Irregulars. The Irregulars launched an attack on Wing, where Cranston Snord hoped to find the famous rare book collection of Devron. Over the course of the fierce fighting, two of the Irregulars' MechWarriors intercepted a message indicating that FWLM forces were moving a library overland to a DropShip landing zone. Assuming this to be the collection he came for, Snord and his unit disobeyed his battle orders and penetrated deep into the enemy rear area. They intercepted the transporters just outside the city of Merth and captured most of the crates holding the rare books.[38]
They brought the book collection with them, but then had to sell some of their art collection to pay for the extensive damage the unit had suffered.[38]
Jihad[edit]
During the Jihad the Word of Blake tricked the Lyran Alliance into attacking the Free Worlds League. During the assault, Wing was one of the worlds that was heavily damaged. In fact it was so badly damaged that the League willingly gave it to the Republic of the Sphere. Investors from the Republic are interested in rebuilding the mining facilities.[1]
Wing was incorporated into the Word of Blake Protectorate at some point after the border war between the Free Worlds League and the Lyran Alliance, and attracted the attention of the allied coalition as a target for liberation in July 3077 as a part of Operation SCOUR. The Third Free Worlds Guards were the garrison unit assigned to defend Wing at this point, but as the likelihood of an assault from the coalition mounted, the Third chose to defect to the Principality of Regulus.[32] The inevitable assault by forces from the Lyran front of SCOUR saw Group III land on Wing, only for the Third Free Worlds Guards to savage the Sixth Benjamin Regulars while the First Federated Suns Lancers failed to support the Combine forces. It would take several more weeks before the Third Free Worlds Guards followed through with their earlier decision and left for Regulus.[39]

- Merth: a city and site of a notable battle during the Third Succession War.[38]
Notes[edit]
- The Kell Hounds scenario pack places the battle fought by Snord's Irregulars on Wing in 3005,[49] but this is impossible as the Irregulars were formed in 3007. The Kell Hounds also establishes that the Thirtieth Marik Militia was handed a humiliating defeat on Wing by Snord's Irregulars.
- According to Jihad Hot Spots: Terra, page 66, the Sixth Benjamin Guards fought on Wing. It has subsequently been confirmed by one of the BattleTech developers that this is a typo, and that the correct unit name is the Sixth Benjamin Regulars:
“ | It's a typo, should be the Sixth Benjamin Regulars, yes.
