Planetary History[edit]

Menkent is an arid world illuminated by a dim orange star. The world is a little less than half-covered with water, but it's so salty that purification units are needed to prepare the fluid for consumption and irrigation. Menkent has little to offer, exporting common metals and small industrial goods.[1]

Age of War[edit]

The world is best known for a battle that took place during the Age of War. In 2408, Alistair Marsden, second Archon of the Lyran Commonwealth, was killed on the world. This left his widow, Katherine Marsden-Steiner, to rule the Commonwealth.[1] In the six centuries since, the world was the site of numerous Draconis Combine raids. These raids damaged the planet's infrastructure.

Jihad[edit]

During the Jihad a Word of Blake WarShips returning from a strike on Skye bombarded the world.[1] The Word of Blake attack on Menkent fell during the last two weeks of October 3069.[42] A trio of Mule-class DropShips fired capital missiles at the surface of the planet. The targets bombarded by the DropShips were not military (they ignored the open militia defense positions), in favor of striking civilian infrastructure targets like the Kluge City hydroelectric dam and the Acropolis fusion substations outside Athens. Scrambled aerospace defenses from Menkent Militia outposts were too slow to engage them, although other ships in orbit were able to take several long-range still photos of the attackers.[43]

Dark Age[edit]

After Gray Monday and the subsequent contraction of the Republic behind the Wall, Menkent found itself an independent world. In 3145 the planet's government rejected a proposal to join the emerging Galatean League, instead opting to peacefully accept Clan Jade Falcon's rule. Shortly after, when a Republic JumpShip entered the system and found itself facing Falcon aerospace forces, a RAF Simurgh squadron succeeded in covering its escape and won a notable victory.[36] [44] [45]

As part of Operation SHOFAR the Sixteenth Hastati briefly drove the Falcon garrison from Menkent in early 3149, but the planet was retaken in late 3050 during Malvina Hazen's drive towards Terra. Following Hazen's defeat in the Battle of Terra Menkent became an independent world once more.[37] [38] [2]
