Preparations

With the successful vote to invade the Inner Sphere passed in the wake of the Outbound Light incident, the bidding process to determine which of the Clans would take part in the invasion commenced. Though the Warden faction had managed to insist Clan Wolf be one of the four and that a fifth Clan be held in reserve, for the rest of the Clans the honor of participation would be determined over the course of two fulls days of bidding, divided into three rounds, and a final day of combat trials. The bidding began with each Clan making their preliminary bid before retiring to study the opposing Clans' bids. On the second day the bidding war began in fullness and Clan Smoke Jaguar was the first to emerge victorious, having slashed their initial bid of eleven Galaxies down to three. In the final round of combat the Smoke Jaguars were victorious again, earning their place alongside Clan Wolf, Clan Jade Falcon and Clan Ghost Bear in the invasion force. Clan Steel Viper meanwhile had earned its place as the fifth reserve Clan, while Clan Nova Cat and Clan Diamond Shark each won a Trial of Refusal for the right to be next in line.[1][2]

In the Grand Council meeting to determine the basic plan of attack, ilKhan Leo Showers in conjunction with Jade Falcon Khan Elias Crichell decided that the four invading Clans would bid for one of four "invasion corridors" which stretched from the Periphery towards Terra. The purpose for this was that, according to an obscure passage in Nicholas Kerensky's diary, the two Khans proposed that whichever Clan captured Terra would become ilClan, the supreme Clan. When it came time to bid, Smoke Jaguar Khan Lincoln Osis achieved a great victory by winning the corridor which ran through the Draconis Combine. Besides worthy opponents, it was believed that House Kurita aided the infamous Stefan Amaris in bringing about the downfall of the Star League, and the Smoke Jaguar warriors welcomed the chance to fight such a foe. As the assembled invasion force gathered in orbit above Strana Mechty ilKhan Showers gave a final speech, promising swift victory and boldly predicting Clan Smoke Jaguar would conquer Terra within the year.[2]

Invasion Route

4.1. Periphery

Smoke Jaguar operations in Periphery

Though each of the four invading Clans were assigned their individual corridors for the invasion, at the insistence of the Khans ilKhan Showers declared the Periphery open territory for all. This allowed Clan Smoke Jaguar to attack Santander's World, controlled by the pirate king Helmar Valasek, which lay within the Ghost Bear corridor. Smoke Jaguar saKhan Sarah Weaver was determined to win her Clan the honor of killing the pirate king and personally led the bidding war against Star Colonel Kellin MacKenzie of the Ghost Bears for that right. Though both had bid down to a Trinary each, saKhan Weaver claimed victory when she removed her own 'Mech from the fight and Star Colonel MacKenzie failed to reciprocate. Because saKhan Weaver had removed her own 'Mech from the bidding process, she would coordinate the battle from her command DropShip.[1][2]

The fight for Santander's World would prove to be the most bloody and hard-fought during the Periphery campaign as the dishonorable pirates used underhanded tactics; though other battles would take place for control of other worlds none were worthy of note. By January of 3050 the Smoke Jaguars had completed their sweep of the Periphery on schedule and lost very few 'Mechs in the process. Though pleased with their progress there was minor indignation felt at the fact that Clan Wolf had likewise accomplished their sweep even faster.[3]

Santander's World (August-September 3049)

Attackers: Shroud Keshik (Alpha Galaxy), 362nd Assault Cluster (Beta Galaxy)
Defenders: Santander's Killers
Major Battle Site: Gillard Plains
Outcome: When saKhan Weaver made her initial batchall she did not expect the "Inner Sphere barbarians" to respond. To her surprise Helmar Valasek, pirate king of Santander's world and leader of Santander's Killers, responded to the ritual challenge and informed her they would meet on the Gillard Plains, ten kilometers from the site of the pirates' base. With her own 'Mech out of the fight saKhan Weaver ordered Shroud Keshik's nine remaining OmniMechs and a Star of Elementals to drop onto the designated battlefield, where they discovered three grounded DropShips. Shielded from the 'Mechs' scanners the Elementals were ordered in to investigate and boarded the first ship, discovering it stripped of all equipment. Annoyed that the pirate had not shown up at the designated time and place the Shroud Keshik began their march towards the pirates' base.[3]
As they passed close the explosives which lined the ships' hulls was detonated, vaporizing the three DropShips and destroying more than half of the OmniMechs in deadly shrapnel. The survivors were then set upon by Helmar Valasek and a company of BattleMechs, the pirate king apologizing for his lateness as he had been eating dinner when the Clan forces landed, and proceed to finish off Shroud Keshik for the loss of four of his own 'Mechs. Furious at this treachery saKhan Weaver claimed the right to break her original bid and personally led the 362nd Jaguar Assault Cluster to hunt down the pirates. Over the course of a week furious fighting raged across the surface of Santander's World, the pirates using their knowledge of local terrain and additional well-laid traps to cripple an entire Trinary of 'Mechs, but they could not overcome the Smoke Jaguars' superior technology and relentless fury. Finally the pirates were forced to make a last stand, during which Helmar's BattleMaster faced off against saKhan Weaver in her Timber Wolf. Though saKhan Weaver was victorious it was later discovered that the pirate king hadn't actually piloted the BattleMaster, and despite their best efforts the Smoke Jaguars never managed to find Helmar Valasek.[4]

4.2. Wave 1 (March-April 3050)

Smoke Jaguar operation in wave 1

With the easy successes of their Periphery campaign, Clan Smoke Jaguar anticipated their first battle against the "valiant" warriors of the DCMS. Their plan was to conquer ten Combine worlds within two months in the hopes of surpassing the speed of Clan Wolf's invasion. Nine of the ten worlds were divided between the Clan's three Galaxies, and whichever captured their allotted targets first would be given the honor of attacking the tenth.[3]

It was with much disappointment then that the elite warriors of House Kurita broke and ran under the fury of the Smoke Jaguar assault; only on Richmond did they face any significant opposition. Though they had expected an easy victory, the Clan warriors felt strangely cheated by how effortless it had been. They also encountered more acts of dishonorable duplicity, and reacted seemingly out of proportion to these offenses, as had happened on Idlewind. In a meeting of the Grand Council Khan Lincoln Osis was forced to defend himself, explaining that the people of the Inner Sphere needed to be taught a lesson.[3][4]

The most graphic example of that lesson, and of the Smoke Jaguars' brutality during the invasion, would take place on Turtle Bay. Following their conquest of that planet the Clan placed all surviving Kurita troops in the capital city Edo's formidible Kurushiiyama prison. Unbeknownst to them among their prisoners was crown prince Hohiro Kurita, son of Theodore Kurita, Gunji-no-Kanrei of the DCMS. To their intense embarrassment the Smoke Jaguars only learned of this after the local Yakuza launched a successful jailbreak which freed Hohiro and the other surviving DCMS troops. An intensive search effort was launched to find and recapture the crown prince, but their efforts were continually hampered by yakuza cells launching guerrilla attacks and setting off bombs. Finally Galaxy Commander Cordera Perez commanded all Smoke Jaguar warriors to withdraw from Edo and order Beta Galaxy's WarShip, the Sabre Cat, to level the city. Repeated strikes from the ship's autocannons and laser weapons bombarded the city until there was nothing left but smoking debris.[4][5]

The barbarity of Commander Perez and others' actions in the destruction of Edo caused an immediate backlash both within the Smoke Jaguar Clan and from without, with Star Colonel Dietr Osis successfully challenging Perez for command of Beta Galaxy. Even the most hardline Crusader saw the act as a sign of cowardice, while many Warden sympathizers called the wholesale destruction criminally irresponsible. Clan Wolf took the opportunity to announce that, henceforth, it would bid away all naval assets in every battle; the other Clans, Smoke Jaguar included, as a matter of honor had no choice but to declare the same.[5]

Richmond (DC) March 3050

Attackers: Trinaries Assault and Second Battle (5th Jaguar Regulars, Alpha Galaxy)
Defenders: 1st Alshain Regulars
Major Battle Sites: Crag Gorge, Olderson Pass
Outcome: Khan Osis' batchall was answered honorably by Tai-sa Donald Ashira, who chose to face off against two Trinaries of the 5th Jaguar on the rocky grounds of Crag Gorge. Over the course of four days the defending Kurita soldiers fought with honor but could not overcome the Jaguars' superior technology, eventually swearing to make a final stand in Olderson Pass in the north wall of the gorge. In a brutal frontal assault the Smoke Jaguars overran the defenders' position and annihilated them, capturing less than 5 percent of the First Regulars as bondsmen.[3]

Tarnby (DC) March 305O

Attackers: Trinaries Battle and Assault (6th Jaguar Dragoons, Alpha Galaxy)
Defenders: 4th Pesht Regulars
Major Battle Site: Divers Grotto
Outcome: The inexperienced soldiers of the Fourth Regulars proved no match for the Smoke Jaguars. The battle began with a predawn raid by Trinary Assault's heavy- and assault-weight 'Mechs, whose superior firepower outmatched the Kuritas' in one-one-one combat, while the sudden appearance of Trinary Battle's seemingly indestructible Elementals cause many to flee in panic. When the Fourth Regulars' eastern flank collapsed Star Captain Bowen of Trinary Battle quickly exploited this break in the enemy's lines and ended the fight in a stunning victory.[6]

Idlewind (DC) March 3050

Attackers: Trinary Assault (3rd Jaguar Cavaliers, Delta Galaxy)
Defenders: Idlewind Stormtroopers (a heavy tank battalion supported by a regiment of mechanized infantry)
Major Battle Site: Breezemont
Outcome: Realizing that Idelwind was defended by such meager forces, Star Colonel Paul Moon allowed bidding from within his Trinary Assault for the right to conquer the world. The honor was won by two Points of Elementals led by Star Commander Joal, who issued a batchall to the defending militia and agreed to meet them in a wooded area two kilometers from the planet's capital. When the Elementals dropped from their troop carrier into the woods they were caught off-guard as dozens of napalm bombs exploded.[3]
Protected within their armored Elemental suits the Smoke Jaguars emerged from the trap unscathed but enraged. Any enemy dishonorable enough to set a trap deserved no mercy, and reasoning that the cowards had gone to ground in the nearby capital the city was declared a no-holds-barred target. Star Commander Joal and his forces led Trinary Assault through the city in a street-by-street search for the defenders, destroying buildings and tearing up pavement in the process. Though the citizens of the city themselves resisted the Smoke Jaguars' advance they were no match for the Clan warriors: within three hours half of the city's population had been massacred and its buildings reduced to rubble.[4]

Schwartz (DC) March 3050

Attackers: Trinaries Command and Second Battle, Supernova Striker (13th Striker Cluster, Delta Galaxy)
Defenders: 9th Pesht Regulars
Major Battle Site: Komache Fields
Outcome: The Jaguars used an orbital combat drop to surprise the defending Regulars. The fighting was fierce and lasted several hours, finally ending when Star Colonel Thilla Showers defeated Tai-sa Mark Graham in single combat. However the Smoke Jaguars weak aerospace cover proved insufficient to prevent the main bulk of the Ninth Regulars from retreating off-world.[6][7]

Rockland (DC) March 3050

Attackers: Alpha and Bravo Stars (Galaxy Trinary Command, Delta Galaxy)
Defenders: Rockland People's Army (1 mechanized infantry regiment)
Major Battle Site: Liberty Park
Outcome: The planetary defenders decided to make their stand at Liberty Park, a patch of land which served as a memorial to their freedom. Unfortunately the outcome was a clear slaughter even from the beginning, as the poorly equipped infantry stood no chance against the Omnimechs of the invaders. The battle was over within minutes of the Smoke Jaguars landing.[7]

Bjarred (DC) March 3050

Attackers: First Trinary Battle, Trinary Striker, Binary Elemental (Jaguar Grenadiers, Alpha Galaxy)
Defenders: 1st and 2nd Bjarred Armored Regiments (heavy armor supported by infantry)
Major Battle Site: Donrad Hill, Bird's Roost
Outcome: An elaborate ambush was set up by the defenders on Donrad Hill, seeding the area with deadly Vibrabombs. Unfortunately their trap was discovered when the Point Commander of an Elemental Point triggered one of the explosives, alerting the Smoke Jaguars to the danger and allowing Binary Elemental to sweep the area and disable the rest of the mines. This forced the Bjarred Armored Regiments to retreat to Bird's Roost, a crumbling Castle Brian dating back to the days of the Star League. This forced the Jaguars to pursue the defenders through the aging structure's maze of tunnels, and while Trinary Strike suffered significant casualties when part of the castle wall collapsed on top of it, they were successful in flushing the defenders out and destroying them.[7]

Turtle Bay (DC) March 3050

Attackers: 362nd Assault Cluster (Beta Galaxy)
Defenders: 14th Legion of Vega
Major Battle Sites: Edo
Outcome: The Smoke Jagaurs began their assault of Turtle Bay by entering the system through Pirate Points and issuing their standard batchall. Tai-sa Tarukito Niiro answered the challenge and agreed to face the invaders in the rolling meadows north of the capital city Edo, deploying every unit under his command save one. Over Prince Hohiro Kurita's furious objections, his battalion was ordered to assume defensive positions within the city itself.[4]
Tai-sa Niiro deployed his units in a broad arc around the battlefield, facing the center of a broad expanse. As he hoped the invaders, two Supernova Trinaries and an aerofighter Trinary, landed in the dead center of the battleground where his massed firepower would finish them off. Unfortunately he was unaware of the Clan's superior technology, including the longer range of their weapons, and the defenders were caught off-guard as the Smoke Jagaurs 'Mechs opened fire first. Clan aerospace fighters strafed a column of DCMS heavy tanks, destroying most of the armor in a single attack; Tai-sa Niiro attempted to counter with his own aerospace forces but they proved to be no match for the Jaguar fighters. In a move of desperation Niiro deployed his infantry, ordering them to emerge from their hidden trenches and attack the Clan 'Mechs from the rear. The accompanying Elemental forces made short work of them before any real damage was done. After several hours of fighting the Fourteenth Legion broke and retreated towards Edo, pursued by the Jaguars.[4]
Realizing they could not hold out against the Jaguars' attack, Hohiro directed the retreating troops back to the Legion's DropShips at the spaceport, then commandeered its facilities to send a warning via satellite uplink to DCMS high command about the situation. Finally Hohiro laid as many traps as he could in the city's narrow streets and ordered his battalion to occupy hidden positions. As the Smoke Jaguars entered Edo's narrow streets Hohiro's forces began snipping from their positions, with the expectation that the attackers would withdraw to regroup. Instead the Jaguars rampaged throughout the city, destroying buildings and killing civilians in their hunt for the defenders. At the last the remains of the Fourteeth Legion, Hohiro among them, surrendered to the Smoke Jaguars and were imprisoned in Kurushiiyama prison.[4]

Almunge (DC) April 3050

Attackers: Alpha Battle Star (Trinary Battle, 3rd Jaguar Guards, Beta Galaxy)
Defenders: Almunge Cadet Infantry Battalion
Major Battle Site: Sculyan Hills
Outcome: Hopelessly outmatched the cadets nevertheless chose to defend their homeworld in the gently rolling Sculyan Hills and took heavy casualties as they fought over every inch of ground. Star Captain Chrisholm, grudgingly impressed by the cadets' courage, accepted the surrender of their survivors and made them bondsmen.[7]

Virentofta (DC) April 3050

Attackers: Trinary Assault, Alpha Elemental Star (225th Jaguar Battle Cluster, Beta Galaxy)
Defenders: 7th Hells Brigade (2 mercenary 'Mech companies, 1 infantry battalion)
Major Battle Site: Port Shianty
Outcome: The mercenaries were attempting to lift off from the planet when the Jaguars landed right on top of them, forcing a desperate and uneven fight. The battle lasted for several hours in the fields surrounding the spaceport until a couple of Elemental Points succeeded in capturing the mercenaries' DropShips. A final ill-fated attempt by the mercenaries was made to recapture their transports, with most of the Brigade killed.[7]

Stapelfeld (DC) April 305O

Attackers: Alpha Command Star (Trinary Galaxy Command, Alpha Galaxy)
Defenders: None
Major Battle Site: None
Outcome: With no military force to defend themselves, the government of the thinly-populated world chose to surrender as soon as the Smoke Jaguars landed. Much to his dismay Galaxy Commander Frederick Wimmer quickly discovered the world was of little value.[7]

4.2. Wave 2 (May-June 3050)

Smoke Jaguar operation in wave 2

The Smoke Jaguars first began to face difficulties during the Second Wave of the invasion, as they were forced to use more troops to garrison their territory and so conquered fewer worlds than anticipated. Not wishing a repeat of what happened on Turtle Bay, their answer was to partner with ComStar in the administration of occupied worlds. However even with the assistance of ComStar the Smoke Jaguars still insisted of installing their own planetary governors and instituting severe penalties for even the most minor of infractions. On many worlds "nonessential" personnel were pressed into making munitions to replenish the Jaguar's diminishing stockpiles; true to form no compensation was offered, the honor of serving the warrior caste deemed payment enough. The mix of ruthless, totalitarian rule and warriors with no knowledge of the societies they now commanded simply caused more dissent and rebellion. Little did they know that Theodore Kurita was secretly smuggling weapons into their Occupation Zone, mainly through yakuza networks, in order to fuel these rebellions.[5]

This policy had tragic consequences on Nykvarm where, over ComStar's objections, a large farm on the worlds northern continent was shut down and its workers transfer to a munition plant. When told that a deadly viral plague broke out annually on the northern continent and that this farm was the sole production site for a type of grain which could cure it, the Smoke Jaguar governor dismissed their warnings as "Inner Sphere trickery." When the plague did break out that year the governor was surprised to find many of his own warriors, as well as a quarter of the local population, dying of the disease. He would die three week into the epidemic, just days before the scientist caste could develop a vaccine.[5]

Even more than their difficulties controlling their subjugated population was the fact that those "spinless" Wardens at Clan Wolf were making excellent progress. At first they took their aggression out on each other in practice bouts; when these turned into more deadly contests Loremaster Edmund Hoyt ordered an end to them to preserve the Clan's warriors for real fighting. This left only the populations of occupied worlds for Jagaur warriors to vent their anger, though attacks on civilians only fueled the fires of rebellion further. Eventually saKhan Weaver received permission from ilKhan Showers to bring forward Provisional Garrison Clusters from the homeworlds in order to garrison captured worlds and free up frontline troops for the next wave.[5]

Sawyer (DC) May 3050

Attackers: Supernova Battle (225th Jaguar Battle Cluster, Beta Galaxy)
Defenders: The Dark Horns mercenary company
Major Battle Site: Posit Woods
Outcome: The battle would last two days as the mercenaries decided to dig in their defensive positions in a lightly wooded area east of the capital city. Nykvarm (DC) May 3050

Attackers: Supernova Assault (19th Striker Cluster, Delta Galaxy)
Defenders: Nykvarm Armored Battalion
Major Battle Sites: Nykvarm (capital city), Bollins Marsh, Lucerna Plains

This served only to delay the inevitable though and their defeat was swift and complete at the hands of Star Captain Castris. Only a few members of the battalion would escape with their lives.[8]

Defenders: 1st Chupadero Armored Legion (1 regiment of armor, 2 mobile infantry regiments, 1 aerospace wing)
Major Battle Sites: Dale Valley, Billoc Tunnels
Outcome: The battle started quickly in the Jaguars' favor as their OmniFighters quickly decimated their opponent's antique fighters, winning air superiority and First Trinary Assault ample time to hunt down the defenders at their leisure. At Dale Valley they easily stepped over 'Mech traps laid by the defenders and routed the tank regiment even as it retreated. The Legion's remnants fell back to the Billoc Tunnels, through which they intended to reach the capital Fredsin and make their final stand, but were foiled when Star Captain Wesley Moon decided to enter after them and destroyed their last remaining vehicles.[8]

Attackers: Trinary Assault, Trinary Command, Binary Elemental (7th Jaguar Dragoons, Alpha Galaxy)
Defenders: 3rd Alshain Regulars
Major Battle Sites: Cordivas Grotto, Filmore Steppes
Outcome: Tai-sa Albert Brookhaven's plan was to hole up his forces in the Cordivas Grotto, forcing the Smoke Jaguars to suffer heavy losses as they tried to flush them out. When the Smoke Jaguar commander instead chose to wait him out, Tai-sa Brookhaven realized his only option was to retreat and decided upon the best approach back to the Third Regulars' DropShips, located at the south end of the Filmore Steppes. When the defenders made their move it started a running battle all the way to the DropShips' location, where a Star of 'Mechs destroyed Brookhaven's command company and lighter elements of Trinary Command held up the Third until Trinary Assault's arrival. Of the regiment's three battalions two managed to retreat off-world, the third utterly destroyed by the Smoke Jaguars.[8]

Marshdale (DC) November 3051

Attackers: 3rd Jaguar Cavaliers (Delta Galaxy)
Defenders: 6th Ghost Regiment
Outcome: The 6th Ghost had one year to prepare themselves for the coming of another clan wave. The preparations included a series of fortified positions, scattered stockpiles and other lessons learned from earlier engagements. The invading 3rd Cavaliers had difficulties fighting the DCMS. Always on the run, the commander of the cluster was frustrated. He used questionable tactics. The omnimechs were used to fire at buildings in a city to bring the DCMS into the open. The Ghost warriors tried to avoid further damage through a fight with the Cavaliers. The Clans used civilians to disarm the mines and vibrabombs, which were laid by the defenders. With no obstacles in their way the 3rd pinned the 6th in place for their destruction. [27]

The Clan forces ran into an area of remote-controlled weapons installations. The 7th Dragoon needed over 7 days to disarm the station and during this time the increasing raids at their supply base made the situation worse. The commander of the 1st Proserpina decided to fight for another day and lift off under heavy losses. [29]
