Ronel is an inhospitable world located close to its parent star. The planet has twin continents, Oxo and Xox. Though it possesses significant mineral wealth, the planet was never settled. Instead mining companies assigned workers to multiyear contracts on the world and then rotated them off-world.[1]
Planetary History
First Succession War
Ronel was one of a small number of former Terran Hegemony systems initially claimed by the Federated Suns prior to the First Succession War, only to subsequently be conquered by the Capellan Confederation. The CCAF military operation began in early 2787 with the conquest of Angol, Rio, and Tybalt; with those invasions complete by August, the CCAF launched a second wave of attacks in October 2787, targeting Hean, New Florence and Ronel. The AFFS defenders on Hean had been expecting an invasion since the DCMS invasion of New Rhodes III in May, but had anticipated an attack by Combine forces, not Capellans. When the Tenth Tikonov Lancers and Fifteenth Liao Lancers attacked Ronel, the defenders found themselves outnumbered, in addition to the problems caused by facing CCAF tactics, which focused on a mix of hit, run and harass, rather than the more direct tactics used by the DCMS. By November all three systems had been conquered, leaving the CCAF free to launch invasions of Addicks, Ankaa and Small World.[13]
When news of the massacre on Kentares IV touched off a wave of AFFS attacks throughout the local region, Ronel became a flashpoint for conflict again, a decade after its capture by Capellan forces. This time, it was the Draconis Combine Mustered Soldiery who invaded. The Thirty-fifth Dieron Regulars landed on Ronel in March, facing off against the Ariana Grenadiers and two supporting regiments of sealed armor. The Grenadiers were still acclimatizing to Ronel, which had a higher gravity than their previous posting, Demeter, as well as being a much more desolate planet. When the Dieron Regulars struck at the Grenadiers in the gnarled forests near the city of Lenor, the Grenadiers found themselves mired in confusion and badly disorientated by the mix of smokescreen and incendiary munitions used by the Regulars' artillery support. The Grenadiers became scattered, and the Regulars launched air strikes against the supporting armor forces; with half of the armor wiped out, the Grenadiers attempted to pull back and rally, only to find that their scattered ranks had been reduced to little more than a battalion of 'Mechs. The Regulars continued to press the Grenadiers, turning their retreat into a rout; when the Grenadiers evacuated by DropShip, the CCAF initially listed the regiment as having been destroyed, but enough forces survived the evacuation to allow the regiment to be reconstituted later. In addition to those survivors who made it away by DropShip, almost a battalion of armor and 'Mechs had been left behind during the frantic retreat; under pressure from the victorious Combine forces, and convinced that they had been shipped to Ronel as sacrificial lambs, the survivors on Ronel abandoned the CCAF and formed a new mercenary unit, the Bad Dream, accepting an immediate contract from the DCMS.[14]
The Draconis Combine and Capellan Confederation went on to fight several battles over the world, until the Capellans used chemical weapons of mass destruction. House Kurita withdrew their claim, leaving the poisoned planet in Capellan hands.[1]
After the toxicity levels dropped to a safe level (defined as "the air can be purified by filter masks") the Capellan government used Ronel as a prison world. Here the criminals and undesirables of Capellan society worked on reopening the mines so the Confederation could benefit. During the Fourth Succession War the Federated Suns took control of the world. Investing in the local mining operations has not only provided House Davion with a source of raw materials, but has allowed the world to start cleaning up the atmosphere. These investments were continued when the Republic of the Sphere took control of the world.[1]
Jihad
In response to the recent raids and assaults on worlds within the Word of Blake Protectorate, the Blakists launched raiding parties against various worlds around the Protectorate border in early September 3076. Making use of weapons of mass destruction to worsen the damage inflicted, the raiding parties—few of which were larger than a single Level III—struck at the worlds of Algorab, Alnasi, Amity, Bordon, Connaught, Hunan, Kessel, New Hessen, New Kyoto, Ronel, St. Andre, Styk, Tsitsang, and Wei. Of the worlds hit, the Capellan Confederation took the brunt of the fighting.[48][49]
Dark Age
The planet's HPG station is one of the few working inside the Republic of the Sphere in 3135.[50]
A raid by Dragon's Fury forces in 3133[51] led by Tai-i Abeda Measho was repulsed by Captain Santiago Padilla and his Swordsworn forces. The Dragon's Fury arrived with a JumpShip and several DropShips, one of them the Tako.[52]
In the 3140s, Ronel was subjected to several probing raids by the Warlord of Dieron Military District. Between these attacks and the diversion of supplies to other AFFS units, the Second Ceti Hussars were too weak to prevent the Combine from taking Ronel in June 3149 when that world was targeted as part of Operation TIAMAT.[45]
