From the back cover[edit]

Bitter rivalries within the Star League threaten to plunge the entire Inner Sphere into chaos, as Victor Steiner-Davion and his sister, Katrina, maneuver their own forces to the brink of civil war. At the same time, their young brother, Arthur, is beginning to gain his own supporters in the Federated Commonwealth—including the powerful Draconis March, who see their own path to power within the younger warrior.

And even as the clouds of insurrection begin to rumble within her own domain, the cunning Katrina devises a ruthless campaign of death that can crush the growing rebellion, rid her of the young upstart Arthur, and strike at the very heart of her hated brother Victor...

Summary[edit]

The novel covers the start of the Fedcom Civil War from the viewpoint of the leading aristocrats, as well as covering some of the major battles. The major plot lines are the decision of Victor Davion to put an end to the tyranny of Katherine Davion's rule—after she makes an attempt on the life of their brother Arthur Davion—along with the work of Tancred Sandoval to rally the Draconis March's military and Arthur Davion to Victor's side. A minor viewpoint character is Katherine Davion herself.

Victor's plot covers his decision to leave ComStar and go to war, along with an attempt on the life of Omi Kurita by the same assassin who killed his mother. Victor goes on to fight on several worlds, including a showdown with Adam Steiner that goes poorly until the Com Guard's 244th Division hot-drops on top of Steiner's forces and turns the tide of battle. Unfortunately, Victor is injured in the closing phases of the fight when his cockpit is hit. Victor ends the novel with the conquest of Coventry.

Tancred Sandoval is sent to try and sway Arthur Davion to stop agitating for war with the Combine which puts him at odds with his father, Duke James Sandoval of the Draconis March. A rogue force of Kuritans attack Robinson, where Tancred and Arthur work together to defend the area around the Robinson Battle Academy. When a bomb goes off at a major speaking event, Arthur is believed killed, setting in motion Victor's War with Katherine as well as the Draconis March's invasion of the Draconis Combine's worlds. Later, as Tancred works to sway units to not invade the Combine and to declare for Victor, he ends up fighting to defend Mayetta's Draconis March Militia unit that had sided with Victor. Sandoval subsequently leads his militia troops to Woodbine, a regional capital that is important to local trade, where he fights the Third Lyran Regulars for control of the planet after they attempt to take the world's leaders hostage.

A small subplot of the novel is the fate of the LAS Angela Franks/Arthur Davion. The ship is in orbit over Coventry when it detects a very large incoming jump signature. The chapter ends with the ship preparing to fight, but no additional POV information is provided. It is later noted by Victor that they had anticipated having to fight whatever WarShip was jumping in-system but that no battle occurred.

Another minor plot line is the POV of Katherine Steiner-Davion, which focuses on her receiving intelligence briefings, directing campaigns to focus on elements of terror (including withholding supplies from planets), ordering attacks on units attempting to stay neutral, and ordering the execution of Davion Guards prisoners on New Avalon.
